CommunityDrivingRangeHoursSeptember hours: Tuesday through Sunday from 8 am–6 pm October hours: Tuesday through Sunday from 8 am–5 pm Range balls: $5/large; $3/smallAll Somersett residents are encouraged to use the driving range at the country club – pricing is noted above. Residents may also access the putting green and chipping/pitching area in addition to unlimited range balls for an all-inclusive price of $15. Please note this is the only way for residents to access the putting green and chipping/pitching area at this time. Our course dress code is also a requirement for the driving range.

GolfTip–ChippingversusPitchingChipping is when the ball flies less in the air than it rolls. Yes, this is a rolling shot. Your most forgiving play if the situation allows is a rolling shot or chip shot, preferably with a 6, 7 or 8 iron. This is the simplest stroke next to putting. Keep your weight forward and hands ahead with ball position off your back big toe. Keep eyes over the ball and equal back/equal through.

Pitching should ideally be practiced with your sand wedge. The sand wedge has 56 degrees of loft while a modern pitching wedge has only 45 to 47 degrees of loft. In golf, that is a big difference – just like the difference between your 5 iron loft and 8 iron loft. By definition, the pitch shot is one that flies a greater distance in the air than it rolls on the green. This is a very necessary shot for better scoring on the Canyon Nine and country club course here at Somersett. This shot is similar to the full swing; however, the best short game players in the world allow the club to release downward to the ball prior to rotating the shoulders and finish facing the target. The weight stays predominantly on your front foot during this shot’s entirety, making it very opposite from the full swing.

AN

YON Best of the Best!

I love living at Sierra Canyon – everyone is so nice and there are so many things to do!” Variations of this sentiment have been repeated for many years now here at Sierra Canyon and we have all worked hard to establish this norm. Our staff implements a variety of great programming, and the results are happy residents. Sierra Canyon’s success did not

happen overnight and we have added many ingredients that have resulted in such a successfully “active” community. One such example is our range of fitness opportunities. We have hired the best fitness instructors in the area, and

they are truly dedicated to getting and keeping our residents in shape. Kelli Nevills, our on-site fitness coordinator, has done a fantastic job of recruiting an excellent and knowledgeable staff. Congratulations are in order for our very own John Wade for recently being voted “Best Pilates Instructor in Reno” in the annual News and Review contest, Biggest Little Best of Northern Nevada. John has been teaching fitness for over 20 years with expertise in a variety of fitness fields including Zumba, water fitness, Pilates, stretch and tone, and more. Laurel, our yoga instructor, has been teaching a variety of yoga classes in Reno for over 25 years as well. The experience of these and many of our other instructors as well as their ability to work with older residents has proven to be a recipe for success!

Besides our incredible fitness programming, homeowners have been instrumental in contributing their expertise to the community. Sierra Canyon has a variety of experts with previous careers as attorneys, CEOs, CPAs, teachers and more. The variety of job set skills our homeowners bring to our Board of Directors and other committees affords a nice balance of knowledge and problem-solving to these important volunteer positions. We are very fortunate that these homeowners have the time, energy and background to keep Sierra Canyon moving forward.

Through a variety of events and resident groups that includes a huge mix of interests such as bridge, pinochle, canasta, snowshoeing, skiing, RV travel, golf, wine tasting and many others, we’re making it possible to enjoy living on a cruise ship on land, as we like to describe the Sierra Canyon lifestyle!

If you have not already, we welcome you to enjoy a fitness class or event and ask you to consider volunteering for your community. The end result is a thriving community with a reputation for an exceptional programming and most importantly, fun!

We also need a copy of the current lease and appropriate proof of residency for occupants. For any questions on homeowner or renter paperwork, please contact Stephanie Viau at [email protected].

2014 Board ElectionThere are three positions open on the Board of Directors. If you would like to serve on the Board, please complete the form included in this issue of Somersett Living in its entirety and return on or before October 16, 2014 to the onsite office located at The Club at Town Center. The completed forms will be reproduced and provided in a mailing to the membership. We also ask that each candidate provide a head shot via email to [email protected] for posting on the website.

Candidate NightThe Election Committee will be hosting Candidate Night to allow owners an opportunity to meet the candidates and hear their responses to various questions on the Association. Look for further information on Candidate Night online and via email starting in early October.

Compliance InformationTo report a non-compliance, please email [email protected]. Please note that while we do investigate and document each complaint received, we cannot disclose the status of anyone’s account. Should a homeowner not respond to or correct a violation, he or she will be summoned to a hearing at which time they could be

suspended from the Club and assessed fines. Once fines reach $500, a lien could be placed on the property. At this time the Association has a policy not to enter a property, unless it is bank owned, and then only to repair front yard landscaping.

Didyouknow? The AGC Guideline for Landscaping (pg. 35) states, “The AGC may grant extensions to the following completion requirements for cause, if a variance request is submitted by the owner for consideration and approval. Side and rear yard landscaping shall be installed within 180 days of issuance of a certificate of occupancy. On Custom Lots, the front yard and parkway strip must be installed within 90 days of certificate of occupancy.” Please be aware that your rear and side yard landscaping needs to be submitted for AGC review and approval before installation of the landscaping, and that landscaping must be installed within 180 days of the purchase of your home. Please follow these guidelines in order to avoid possible violations and suspension of club privileges. To request an extension, email [email protected].

Finance Committee ActivitiesMy name is Ray Lee and for the past 4 years I have served as a homeowner elected board member and SOA Treasurer. My wife and I reside in Sierra Canyon, but what happens in Somersett as a whole matters to all of us. Prior to my election on SOA board, I also served on the SOA financial committee with several other community members. Today we still have a very active finance committee with 7 members that review the monthly financial statements, reviews selected contracts (the management company; common area landscaping; etc.); review special projects /amenity requests for financial impact; review reserve projects (long term maintenance and replacement of our facilities); works on the budget for the upcoming year; help select investment options for our cash and other projects that may be assigned by the board.

The chair of the SOA finance committee is by charter the SOA Treasurer. Our vice chair is Ron Sobreror and the other members of the finance committee are Curtis Chan, Joe Fadrowsky, Dan Kanyr, Mike Slattery and Steve Spear. On an annualized bases these committee members spend approximately 400 cumulative hours on SOA financial matters. When you see these individual around Somersett please thank them for their service to our community.

There are other committees that have been chartered by the SOA board including Strategic Planning, Communications and Elections. They are also staffed by community volunteers to help enhance and improve Somersett. It’s great to be home!
