A Maths Cafe - Why?We will be discussing what is needed for children

to become confident and competent

mathematicians:

• By showing some simple yet very effective ways of supporting your children to achieve a Good Level of Development.

• By answering any questions about the way we teach maths in Year One at St Aloysius.

What do our children need to be able to do by the end of Year One?

• Identify and represent numbers using objects and pictorial representations.

• Write numerals from 1-20 in numerals and in words.

• Count to and across 100 forwards and backwards beginning with 0, 1 and any given number.

• Count, read and write numbers to 100 in numerals from 0 in twos, fives and tens.

• Read, write and interpret mathematical symbols: +, - and =.

• Add and subtract two single digit numbers and move onto adding and subtracting numbers to 20, counting on or back.

What do our children need to be able to do by the end of Year One?

• Solve one step problems that involve addition and subtraction and multiplication and division.

• Use the language of equal to, more than, less than (fewer), most and least and identify one more and one less than.

• Use everyday language to talk about size, weight, capacity, position, distance, time and money.

• Recognise and know different denominations of coins and notes

What do our children need to be able to do by the end of Year One?

• Describe everyday objects and shapes using mathematical language, recognising and naming common 2d and 3d shapes.

• Compare, describe and solve practical problems (including measuring and recording) for length and heights, capacity and volume, mass/weight and time. (Language)

• Begin to recognise simple fractions and know that all parts must be equal parts of the whole, including halves and quarters.

What do our children need to be able to do?

• Begin to tell the time on the clock to the hour and half hour.

• Describe position, direction and movement for whole and half turns, quarter and three quarter turns.

• Order and sequence familiar events.

How are the children assessed?

• Children are assessed at the end of the year as either developing, secure or mastery.

• On a daily basis, through:• Questioning;• Marking and feedback;• Observation; and,• Knowledge of what the average child needs to do by the end of

Year 1

Weekly:• Mental maths quiz

Half Termly:• Summative assessment/Teacher assessment

How can you help? Practising number facts

• Find out which number facts your child is learning at school (addition facts to 10, doubles, etc). Try to practice for a few minutes each day using a range of vocabulary.

• Have a ‘fact of the day’. Pin this fact up around the house. Practise reading it in a quiet,

loud, squeaky voice. Ask your child if they can recall the fact.

• Play ‘tennis’ to practice complements with your child. You say a number. They reply

with how much more is needed to make 10. Encourage your child to answer quickly,

without counting or using fingers.

• Throw 2 dice. Ask your child to find the total of the numbers (+) or the difference (-).

Can they do this without counting?

How can you help? Practising number facts

• Use cards (no pictures). Turn over two cards and ask your child to add or subtract the

numbers. If they answer correctly they keep the cards. How many cards can they collect

in 2 minutes?

• Play Bingo. Each player chooses five answers (e.g. numbers to 10 to practice simple

addition). Ask a question and if a player has the answer they can cross it off. The winner

is the first player to cross off all their answers.

• Give your child an answer. Ask them to write as many addition sentences as they can

with this answer (e.g. 10= ? + ?). Repeat the activity with subtraction.

• Give your child a number fact (e.g. 5+3=8). Ask them what else they can find out from

this fact (e.g. 3+5=8, 8-5=3, 8-3=5, 50+30=80, etc). Add to list over the next few days.

How can you help? Practising number facts

• Pair up two halves of plastic eggs with numbers written on from 0-10 to help to make the total of 10.

• Play number bond lotto game.

• Use a skewer with pink and white marshmallows. Place different quantities of one colour of marshmallows onto the skewer and child to complete the number bond to 10 with the other colour.

• During bathtime placed numbered soft play plastic balls in the bath and children to fish for the number bond to 10.

• Play magnetic fishing game - write numbers on the bottom of the fish and the children can add or subtract the numbers on the two fish that they catch.

• Play the double and half game using a dice to move along the board.

How can you help? Pegs are great for counting and improve fine motor skills too!

• Make number cards and have children peg the correct number of pegs to match each numeral.

• Section paper plates into ‘slices’ to display number sentences to 10 and children to find the correct answer on a peg and peg it to the corresponding number sentence.

• Alternatively display the numeral on the plate and the children can find the peg which displays the corresponding number sentence.

• Put pegs onto a coat hanger and separate in different ways to find two numbers which make 10.

How can you help? Real Life Problems

• Go on the journey. Do you arrive earlier or later than expected?

• Plan activities during the holidays e.g. if we are going swimming on Tuesday, and to the park the day after, what day will we be going to the park? Ask your child to think about what time you will need to set off.

• Empty piggy bank and sort the money into different denominations.

• Go shopping with your child to buy two or three items. Ask them to work out the total amount spent and how much change you will get from a given amount.

• Cooking - help your child to measure out the ingredients needed for a recipe.

Use mathematical words!Help develop your childs mathematical language by modelling different words you

can use to describe size, length, weight and volume.

heavy, light, empty, full, long, short, big, small etc…

Look at your home environment to develop language, especially positional words – put the teddy in front of the chair (behind it, on it, under it etc)
