THOUGHTS FFOORR OOUURR PPAARRIISSHH CCHHIILLDDRREENN by “Jackie”, Fr. Ferguson’s Cat

Hi boys and girls! My name is “Jackie”! As you know, I am a cat that belongs to Father Ferguson! That’s right! It’s almost time for school to start again! It’s hard to believe how fast the summer has gone by. Time flies when you spend your days napping in the sun, doing my favorite hobby of bird watching, and eating tunaflavored ice cream.

But now, it’s time to go back to school! Do you enjoy going to school? I really like Kitty School, because I get to learn all kinds of cool things. I’ve learned how to count all the way to 100 (it’s important to know how many cans of tuna you have), and I’ve learned about famous cats in history like “Morris”, a cat who was famous on TV; and “Socks”, a cat who once lived in the White House; and “Felicette”, a cat who travelled to outer space back in 1963! (for real!) I am also learning the Kitty Alphabet so I can write notes to my friends. The Kitty Alphabet has 4 letters: M, E, O, and…I keep forgetting….oh yeah: W! What do you like learning about?

This year, because of the big bad virus called “COVID”, things are going to be different for a lot of us. I hear that some of you will be able to go back to your classrooms (which will be set up a little different!), and some of you will have to see your teachers and classmates over the computer! It’s going to be a strange time going back to school! You know, I was a little worried about all these changes, but then I prayed to Jesus and He told me that things will be all right, and that He and all the grownups will help us get adjusted so we can still have a great time and learn all kinds of cool things about God’s good world! Why not take a moment today and thank Jesus for all our teachers, parents, and fellow kittens….errr….fellow kids at school! Stay holy, and have a “purr” fect week!

LETTER FROM TTHHEE PPAASSTTOORR Dear Parishioners:

The Diocese of Columbus has recently offered some guidance to pastors regarding the continuing return to public worship as we continue to respond to the COVID 19 pandemic. None of us will forget the "shutdown" last March, April and May, when all of our churches were closed, and public Masses were not celebrated. On Pentecost Sunday, we began a very cautious return to public Masses, even while a general dispensation from the Sunday obligation was granted to all Catholics. Since that initial reopening, some parishioners have eagerly returned to Sunday Mass. Our attendance here at St. Andrew's has been approximately one third of what it was before the shutdown. Attendance at weekday Masses has been very good. And many parishioners, especially those who are more vulnerable because of age or health conditions, are prudently staying home and avoiding gathering with others. Perhaps they connect with the worshipping community via a broadcast or livestream Mass. The guidance from the Diocese suggests that we should consider the first phase of the return to public worship to be over, and now we should be cautiously moving into a new phase in which we will take some more small steps toward normalcy, even as we continue to take careful precautions for the health and safety of all those coming to church.

I want to make it clear that the dispensation from the Sunday Mass obligation has been extended indefinitely. All Catholics in the Diocese of Columbus and throughout Ohio are excused from this obligation. However, if you are healthy, and are not experiencing any symptoms of illness, and are not in a "high risk" category, you are at this time encouraged to come to Mass. Those who are in a highrisk category or are not feeling well are encouraged to stay home. Those who come to church will be expected to wear a mask, to observe social distancing, and follow all of the safety protocols that have been established.

Also, it is now possible, with appropriate precautions, to bring Holy Communion to the homebound, and to offer the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick to those who need and request it. I would note, however, that pastoral visits to those in the hospital or nursing homes remains very restricted.

We are also permitted and encouraged to resume some form of Eucharistic Adoration in the parishes. Here at St. Andrew's therefore, we will resume our Tuesday evening Exposition of the Most Blessed Sacrament beginning on Tuesday, September 8 at 6:00 p.m., and concluding with Compline and Benediction at 8:45 p.m. I hope that these small steps which we are taking with the guidance coming from the Diocese, will bring us all a bit closer to "normal." May God bless you all and keep you safe and healthy!

Your Pastor,

Msgr. Stephan Moloney

Your Pastor,

Msgr. Stephan Moloney

Thank you for your continued support. We are grateful for your generosity.

We encourage those still using envelopes to either place them in the baskets located near the exits on your way out after Mass, mail them to the parish office or sign up for your bank ’s online bill pay service (please use your envelope number as the “account” number). Send to St. Andrew Parish, 1899 McCoy Rd., Columbus, OH 43220.

St. Andrew Parish would like to thank the increasing number of families who are currently giving electronically. You may not see these fellow parishioners place an envelope in the basket every week, but their consistent giving does not go unnoticed in our parish office. Not only does it allow us to process the contributions quickly, but no physical contact is required. Each month, our parish receives a steady and predictable stream of income from those donors who have made the commitment to give to God first by having a designated contribution automatically transferred to our parish through our Online Giving Program If you would like to learn more about this easy, safe and secure way of giving, please visit Our Sunday Visitor at osvonlinegiving.com/4150 . If you need help getting started, please do not hesitate to call our Business Manager, Ann Whiteman, at 614 451 4290 ext. 102 or via email

STEWARSHIP WISDOM

“What profit would there be for one to gain the whole world and forfeit his life?” - Matthew 16:26

St. Francis of Assisi once said, “Remember, you are what you are in the eyes of God, and nothing else.” We often forget this Stewardship wisdom when we spend all of our time, talent and treasure to gain more of the world’s riches. We need to set our priorities based on God’s values and not the values of the material world.

SCHEDULING MMAASSSS IINNTTEENNTTIIOONNSS

The practice of requesting a Mass to be offered for a loved one – living or deceased – is a beautiful and wonderful part of our Catholic tradition and to ensure all who wish to schedule a Mass for loved ones may do so, a new Mass Intention procedure has been put into effect immediately.

All Mass Intention requests should be made in writing must be accompanied by payment. While you may call or email to check the availability of certain dates or times, requests will not be finalized and will not be reserved until payment is received.

A $10 stipend, as determined by Diocesan policy, is to accompany each Mass request.

Only one intention (person) per Mass is permitted, howeverfor pastoral concerns to better accommodate the needs of parishioners, two first names (David & Catherine Smith) or two last names (Davis & Smith Families) are acceptable.

Once scheduled, we will send a list of the Masses scheduledfor your records. Please allow 5 7 days.

Families may schedule up to twelve (12) Masses per year with four (4) of those on weekends. Additional Masses willbe accepted, but these will be scheduled when dates are available throughout the year on a rotating basis.

Questions? Please email the parish secretary at [email protected] or call the parish office at 614451 4290.

TTWWEENNTTYY--SSEECCOONNDD SSUUNNDDAAYY IINN OORRDDIINNAARRYY TTIIMMEE AAUUGGUUSSTT 3300,, 22002200

GOSPEL MEDITATION EENNCCOOUURRAAGGEE DDEEEEPPEERR UUNNDDEERRSSTTAANNDDIINNGG OOFF SSCCRRIIPPTTUURREE

Secular pursuits only bring a temporary amount of satisfaction and fulfillment. As much as we may think that achieving worldly success, economic security, personal wellbeing, and self fulfillment are worthy goals to obtain, they all are dependent on external variables and can lead to emptiness. We are trained to be very pragmatic and productive. Unless we are able to check off all of the boxes or comply with specific measurable requirements, our value and worth becomes questionable. Corporations, educational institutions, systems, structures, and secular ideology rarely consider deeper, more spiritual, and human contributions a person can and needs to make.

To the secular mind, the wisdom and ideals of the Gospel are making less and less sense. Consider for a moment this question: “What profit would there be for one to gain the whole world and forfeit his life?” While Jesus is asking this very challenging question to people who

are considering his message, many in our world are in a quite different place. Whether we realize it, many folks are asking a much different question. Why would you not want to gain the whole world and secure your life? If you look at where a lot of folks are investing their time, energy, and resources, it becomes obvious where current priorities rest.

Modern day comforts and possibilities are backing us out of our relationship with God. The fire burning in every human heart is trying to find its satisfaction in the things that humans have created and not God. Being altruistic and offering compassion for those most in need becomes a political responsibility or responsible gesture. We realize that our hearts need to be centered on something and someone who calls us out of ourselves, but we struggle and battle with naming the source of that call. God places the desire to seek, find, and love Him in the core of every soul. We are not abandoned

and left to fend for ourselves. But we can easily get confused. We know that when we extend ourselves to another self sacrificially, we are doing what is just and right. We know that we can work through suffering and loss and come out better and more whole on the other side.

Our minds need to be renewed so that they can begin to understand that there is much more to who we are, and that faith plays a pivotal role in achieving our true and everlasting goals. It is when we see that it is only faith that can bring us to this heightened awareness of ourselves and God that it will begin to make sense. Then, we can put things in proper perspective and consider being a disciple.

To find an answer to this question, we need to turn to the Church’s Code of Canon Law. Here we read, “One who has received the blessed Eucharist may receive it again on the same day only within a Eucharistic celebration in which that person participates …” (no. 917). This tells us that the standard answer would be that we can receive communion twice in a day.

Having said that, we also want to be sure that we pay attention to the entire instruction. The phrase “within a Eucharistic celebration in which that person participates” is important. It means a) that we always have to think of receiving communion as being

within a celebration of the Mass and b) we have to be participants in that celebration – we can’t simply show up “in time” for communion.

So when would this rule apply?

For example, if you attend Mass on a Saturday morning and then take part in the Sunday Vigil Mass on Saturday evening, you could licitly receive communion at both celebrations. Or, another example, if you receive communion at a wedding or funeral Mass, you could also receive communion at a daily Mass or Sunday Vigil celebrated on the same day. We always

want to be sure that we observe the rules for fasting from food and drink before receiving the eucharist (see Code of Canon Law, no. 919).

THE VISION OF STEWARDSHIPI love the original movie Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. All the way through while I watch the film I still laugh and feel like a child. It is only the last line with which I have an issue. Wonka by now has chosen Charlie to succeed him as head of the chocolate factory. They board an elevator that proceeds to crash through the roof and begins to fly. Wonka then asks Charlie if he ever heard of what happened to the boy who got everything he ever wanted. After Charlie says no,

Wonka explains, “He lived happily ever after.” As I get older, I can say I have met several people who got all or most of all they have ever wanted, but unlike Charlie, it did not lead to endless bliss. In fact, as a Christian I know that that statement of Wonka’s is a lie. The secret to living happily ever after lies in not getting all you ever wanted, but instead in giving all you ever wanted away.

A person can’t have any sense of that reality until they begin to see his or her life transformed by Jesus. When we have accepted the challenge placed before us and made a choice to live a certain way

daily, we can find ourselves transformed. Following Jesus is not easy, but it is the only true way to find authentic joy. When we have emptied ourselves and allowed him to fill the open spaces in us, we become different. We are transformed and, if enough of us in a parish community experience the same journey, our parish is transformed as well. Then we begin to transform the world around us. Don’t be fooled: A flying elevator is cool, but it pales in comparison to what can happen when we find a new life in Jesus Christ.
