As we are preparing very much to secure a place for building our future Church, there are three things I would like to bring to your attention at this point. 1. With prayer, everything is possible. Our Lord through the Gospel of John chapter 15 reminded us that we cannot do anything without Him; and if we remain in Him we will bear much fruit. It is essential that we pray with confidence to our Lord, so that a House of Lord is built for our mission church. I encourage all of you to read Psalm 127. The Book of Nehemiah tells us that he prayed all the time in order to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem tem- ple. If we pray to the Lord our faith in HIM will carry us; if we don’t pray we will have to carry our faith and the Lord and we feel burdened and angry; because we cannot carry the infinite anyway. Our Lord said this many times: “your faith has saved you”. May I invite all of you to pray the rosary together every Monday at 8.30pm through the tele- phone. 2. So the answers for the questions “on the need of a church in NVA” and the possibility for the same are to be found in one’s own heart, in his or her relationship with the Lord, not in the hearts and minds of another person. So let us look into our own heart and our prayer life: a prayer life based on our personal love, commitment and devotion to the Lord and to the so- ciety. Have we ever wondered why and how our forefathers built the churches and schools before they even built a home for themselves? If we look at the churches, schools etc we use or used, can’t we see the prayers, commitment and love be- hind those? Some questions seem to be the result of the lack of faith and commitment of the questioner (of course not all the questions are that way). The sign to identify such questioners would be that they never expect any answers or are not willing to accept any answers or reasonable dialogue and will never be satisfied with any convincing dialogues (please don’t judge anyone; it is to help each of us when you discuss about the church, I wrote this). There is a proverb in Malaya- lam that we cannot wake up a person who pretends sleeping. “Please pray for them”. 3. The answer for the question whether building a church is possible is to be sought not just in our own hearts and minds but primarily from our Lord; because it is the House of the Lord. The things which are humanly impossible are possible for God (Luke 1:38). Some of the examples are EWTN, Shalom television, many of our churches built in the US. Let us try our best, and give the rest into the hands of the Lord. Let it not be a business plan at all for us and never consider building a church as a business (the county and engineers might consider so); but feel the pathos of and belongingness to the church of Christ and have strong faith in HIM. Let us approach it as something Sacred and Holy. Many times I have felt that we are in LKG when it comes to faith; but PHD level when it comes to the skepticism. Let us be like the one our Lord asked us to be: one who believes in GOD without seeing (John 20:29). May Good Lord bless you all! Sincerely yours in Christ Tijoachan

Dear Saint Jude family,

May the Holy Name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ be Praised!

As we are preparing very much to secure a place for building our future Church, there are three things I would like to bring to your attention at this point. 1. With prayer, everything is possible. Our Lord through the Gospel of John chapter 15 reminded us

that we cannot do anything without Him; and if we remain in Him we will bear much fruit. It is essential that we pray with confidence to our Lord, so that a House of Lord is built for our mission church. I encourage all of you to

read Psalm 127. The Book of Nehemiah tells us that he prayed all the time in order to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem tem-ple. If we pray to the Lord our faith in HIM will carry us; if we don’t pray we will have to carry our faith and the Lord and we feel burdened and angry; because we cannot carry the infinite anyway. Our Lord said this many times: “your faith has saved you”. May I invite all of you to pray the rosary together every Monday at 8.30pm through the tele-

phone.

2. So the answers for the questions “on the need of a church in NVA” and the possibility for the same are to be found in one’s own heart, in his or her relationship with the Lord, not in the hearts and minds of another person. So let us look into our own heart and our prayer life: a prayer life based on our personal love, commitment and devotion to the Lord and to the so-ciety.

Have we ever wondered why and how our forefathers built the churches and schools before they even built a home for themselves? If we look at the churches, schools etc we use or used, can’t we see the prayers, commitment and love be-hind those? Some questions seem to be the result of the lack of faith and commitment of the questioner (of course not all the questions are that way). The sign to identify such questioners would be that they never expect any answers or are not

willing to accept any answers or reasonable dialogue and will never be satisfied with any convincing dialogues (please don’t judge anyone; it is to help each of us when you discuss about the church, I wrote this). There is a proverb in Malaya-lam that we cannot wake up a person who pretends sleeping.

Let us be like the one our Lord asked us to

be: one who believes in GOD without seeing (John 20:29).

family year. Make our family rooted in Your Mercy. Re-

new our families with faith, hope and love. Help us to

make firm resolutions to follow Your only Son, our Lord

HIS EXCELLENCY MAR JACOB ANGADIATH’S VISIT

St. Jude Syro Malabar Community of Northern Virginia was indeed very fortunate to have

His Excellency Bishop Jacob Angadiath visit us during the first week of August, 2014

During this visit, His Excellency not only administered the sacraments of the First Holy

Communion and Confirmation (read more on pg. 6) but also conducted his Pastoral visit

during the course of which, he spent time interacting with families at all family ward units in

the parish. The pastoral visit began on Friday August 1, 2014 and concluded on August 4,

2014. His Excellency, was also really kind to spend some time with our kids during their

Vacation Bible School (read more on pg 8). Kids really enjoyed this.

On Sunday, August 3, 2014 His Excellency celebrated Mass for us at St. Andrew’s Church, Centreville. The parishion-

ers all gathered in their traditional attire and expressed their love for the Church welcoming His Excellency in their tradi-

tional grandiose way. Tijoachan and our trustees received His Excellency and led him through a row of excited kids all

dressed in white holding flowers in their hands for His Excellency’s welcome. Men of our parish held muthukudas on

either side and women arranged Thalapoli lamps to greet our Bishop, as he walked onto the red carpet into the Church.

The solemn Mass was celebrated with a beautiful

Homily during which His Excellency, reinforced the

importance of keeping our Syro Malabar traditions

alive. He also said that in Syro-Malabar faith, it’s

important to keep our identity and that keeping

Jesus in our heart and as the center of our life is of

utmost importance. Fr. Franklin Joseph from the

Kalyan Diocese, Maharashtra, India and our Tijoa-

chan co-celebrated the Mass along with his Excel-

lency.

HIS EXCELLENCY MAR JACOB ANGADIATH’S VISIT

After Mass, parish ministry/group leaders presented a brief report to the Bishop. His Excellency who was very im-

pressed the plethora of activity in our parish. During His Excellency’s address to the community, that followed after the

presentation of the reports, he praised the great leadership of Tijoachan. He also applauded the parishioners for their

active involvement and commitment toward the growth of the community.

Bishop’s visit was an immense blessing for all of us. St. Jude Syro-Malabar community whole heartedly thank His Ex-

cellency for visiting and spending so much time with us. We whole heartedly look forward to welcome him again soon.

Let us all learn from Bishop’s example strive to imbibe his qualities of humility and grace and accordingly prepare our-

selves to serve God and His people.

FIRST HOLY COMMUNION AND CONFIRMATION

On August 2, 2014 11 children from our parish received the sacrament of first holy communion and confirmation. The sacrament was administered by our Bishop His Excellency Mar Jacob Angadiath. Out of the 11 children, 1 child received only the Sacrament of First Holy Communion, 7 children received both the sacrament of First Holy Communion and Confirmation while the re-maining 3 children received the sacrament of Confirmation. The ceremony began by 10:30 am at St. Veronica's Catholic Church, Chantil-ly. A warm and traditional welcome awaited our Bishop. His Excellency was greeted with a flower bouquet amidst a row of parishioners holding muthuku-da. The liturgy began with a solemn procession led by the children all dressed and looking beautiful in their sacramental garments and singing the hymn ‘Va Va Yesunadha’. His Excellency presided the liturgy with Fr. Matthew Punchayil and Fr.Tijo Mullakkara as the co-celebrants. The whole community joined the 11 candi-dates, along with their families, relatives and friends in praying and praising the Almighty as the candidates were initiated into the sacraments in a moving but solemn ceremony. After the ceremony the kids who received their sacrament presented three hymns in Syriac, allowing everyone gathered in the church to experience a part of our Syriac traditions. His Excellency really applauded the kids and their teachers Felix Simon and Preena Roberts for all their hard work. He also expressed how impressed he was at how the kids sung so well in Sye-iac. A reception for family friends and parishioners was hosted by the parents after Mass and St. Veronica’s hall. Parents also hosted a dinner for all to cel-ebrate at St. Josephs school Hall the same evening. Special thanks to Rincy Jimmy, Rani James, Shiny Shaji, Tomy Paul for all

their hard work in preparing the children to receive their sacraments. We also

thank Felix and Preena for teaching the kids Syriac hymns. Congratulations

to all the children who received their first Holy Communion and Confirmation.

Special thanks to our dear Tijoachan for his constant spiritual guidance and help-

ing the kiss prepare for receiving the sacrament in a meaningful way. We also

congratulate Justin Jose, Melissa Thomas, Nihar Xavier, Sona Tomy, Tessa

SEEK HIS KINDGOM SERIES

Volume 5 Issue 9 S t . J u d e S y r o - M a l a b a r C h u r c h O f N o r t h e r n V i r g i n i a Page 7

We St. Jude family desire to seek You, know You and love You. We long to come to You through Your Holy Mother, learn

more about her and consecrate ourselves to Her.

To help us achieve this, we are starting Seek His Kingdom Series on September 21st at 2:00 pm. The first part of this

series will involve reading and understanding the book “True devotion to Mother Mary” by Saint Louis de Mont-fort. This will

be spread over 6 sessions, after which all those interested can prepare to consecrate themselves to Jesus through mother

Mary. We invite all our parishioners to join us in this beautiful journey every Sunday at 2:00 pm at St. Andrews Lu-

theran Church, Centreville.

Lord, when I was a little child, I went to Sunday school to

know You,

Even though I sought You in those days, I didn't really

know You,

When I grew older, I could have known more about You,

But I never found the time to seek You.

I learned the pulse of this world,

I learned to develop indifference,

I learned to live for myself,

But somewhere I forgot to learn about You!!

I learned math, technology, business management, arts,

literature, yoga..

I couldn't find time to seek You or know You

I couldn't find time to learn about the teaching of Your

church,

Because certifications for promotions and jobs kept me

busy.

Media, social networks connected me more closely to my

friends.

But it started disconnecting me from You!!

I couldn't find time to read about the works of Your great

saints...

Because I was busy with my social chats!!

I went seeking happiness of this world,

The ways of this world hardened my heart.

It taught me to become pragmatic.

Alienating myself from my true self.

Slowly without my knowledge, I left You somewhere be-

hind,

Leaving the Way.

But You came searching for me,

Knocking at the door of my heart.

Even though You are giving Yourself completely to me,

I am not able to receive You in my broken heart,

Now in this miserable state, You want to help me.

So You gave me Your mother as my hope.

I want to fight against the desires of flesh,

And stand against the pragmatic philosophies of this

world,

Looking at Your Holy Mother,

I want to go back to my true self.

It is not easy to fight against the desires of this world,

I am falling many times in my temptations..

You gave me Your Mother to lead me in my battles,

I am here to be trained as a soldier of Her secret army.

You filled Her with full of Your grace,

You made Her treasury of Your grace,

You gave her as my mother.

As a guide to take me back to the Way.

As our Thirunnal is around the corner, we are inviting

parishiones to become Presudentees and conduct

the Thirunnal. "Presudentee" is a tradtional way fol-

lowed in Kerala to celebrate feasts of the saints. T

All those interested in becoming presudentees this

year, please do contact Trustees , Sony K or your

ward representatives at the earliest. The requested

amount to be a Presudentee is $1,000

We request you all to remember in

prayer the Episcopal Ordination of Mar

Joy Alappatt.

The ordination will take place on Sep-

tember 27, 2014 at 9:00am at Mar

Thoma Sleeha Syro Malabar Cathe-

dral, Illinois, USA.

Request you all to keep this day and

this special intention in prayer.

3rd Annual Vacation Bible School The 3rd Annual Vacation Bible School was held during the week of August 4, 2014 this year. With great ex-citement and enthusiasm approximately 64 kids joined us to learn more about Jesus’ One of Kind Love at VBS weird Animals . At VBS weird animals kids learnt that weird “means special, unique, and one-of-a-kind, kids are reminded of Jesus' special love for them - even when they feel different!

We were indeed privileged and honored to have His Excellency Bishop Mar Jacob Angadiath inaugurate VBS for us this year. His Excellency spent some time thereafter with the kids visiting them at various stations and watching kids learn more about Jesus’ love. Kids loved the personal interaction that they got with Bishop

During 5 days of VBS, kids experienced God’s Word in surprising and unforgettable ways! Each day they learnt one simple Bible verse, Bible point and a Bible Story - making it easy for kids to remember! They also learnt new songs each day and got to meet a new buddy who helped them understand God’s love even bet-ter. Kids also got a chance to be on air at WTGS 91.9 FM during VBS.

This exciting and amazing VBS year was made possible by the generosity of a few and the time, commitment and hard work of over 35 volunteers. No words can express our gratitude to the countless hours they put in over a span of over two months to help make this VBS a memorable one for all. Overall, it was a great week for our community and it brought us all together as one catholic community to serve the Lord. We thank God, most Holy Mother and our Patron, St. Jude for the success of this event.

3rd ANNUAL ST. JUDE SOCCER TOURNAMENT The 3rd Annual Soccer Tournament—St. Jude Sevens/Elevens was held on August 17, 2014 at Bryne Rigde

park, Aldie this year with great enthusiasm. The event was inaugurated by our dear TijoAchan. This annual

soccer tournament is an intra parish tournament held by our parishioners annually. Members from the com-

munity and our soccer players made the utmost use of this beautiful summer day by gathering at the soccer

field to witness the much awaited game for the year. This highly contested event was a chance for the family

units to show off their soccer skills and community spirit, all with enough “dramatics” in pure “Malayalee” style.

This year, the championship was between “Kidilan Heroes” representing Ashburn/Leesburg/Herndon and

“SRA Avial” representing South Riding/Aldie /Gainseville/Centerville/Fairfax/ Alexandria and Woodbridge fam-

ily units.

During this action packed elevens game, both “Kidilans Heroes” and “SRA Avial” fought hard, but at the end

team “SRA Avial” won the match by a goal. The final score was SRA Avial (2) to Kidilan Heroes (1). At the

end of the match TijoAchan, handed the ever rolling trophy to SRA Avial. The game showcased many inspir-

ing moments, enough to keep the supporters on their feet. Overall despite the heat, everyone enjoyed the

very exciting match. Special thanks to the kids and parents who organized the lemonade stand. We thank

Savio for referring the match. A special thanks to the organizing committee for organizing the annual tourna-

ment. Special thanks also to Rajesh Joy also for capturing the spirit of the game in camera. Hearty congratu-

lations to our champions—SRA AVIAL.

ST. JUDE ANNUAL PICNIC 2014

St. Jude Syro-Malabar community’s annual picnic this year was held on August 30th at Bull Run Park in Cen-

treville, VA. It was a wonderful day packed with fun and food for all. Many of our parishioners joined in to

make this a great and memorable day. The day was packed with games as well as individual sports for kids

and adults which included couples three legged race, Cricket, badminton, sack race etc., with the king of all

events “tug of war” being the most thrilling and exciting one. Everyone enjoyed helping out with the grill and

making some great hamburgers. Thattukada stole the spotlight that, with volunteers dishing out crispy dosa

and serving it with mouth watering chutney and omelet made a great feast for all. We thank WINGS for or-

ganizing the thattukada and for all those who helped in making this event a memorable one. Overall it was a

fun filled day for one and all. We thank God for the wonderful weather on that day and for a safe picnic. For

ST. JUDE PRAYER TIME

Feast Day Celebration - St. Alphonsa Ward

St. Alphonsa ward members celebrated the feast of their patron Saint on August 9,

2014. She is the first native saint from India and her feast day is on July 28th,

2014.The celebration started with offertory procession followed by Holy Mass and spe-

cial prayers to Alphonsamma. The ward units also prepared special song and nercha.

After the Mass there was a special presentation on the life of Saint Alphonsa. This was

unique mainly because it was the first presentation by an adult which was later on fol-

lowed by a quiz for kids with prizes being awarded to kids who answered correctly.
