STAND FIRM IN THE LORD As we begin our season of fasting, prayer, and almsgiving,
the reading from Deuteronomy reminds us of our duty of alms-
giving, that we “set [our offerings] before the Lord, [our] God,
[and] shall bow down in [God’s] presence” (Deuteronomy
26:10). The reading from Romans refers us to our prayer, re-
minding us that “The word is near you, in your mouth and in
your heart . . . For everyone who calls on the name of the Lord
will be saved” (Romans 10:8, 13). These are comforting words,
and encourage us to ask God for what we need and to aid us in
our prayer. Finally, the Gospel of Luke shows us a fasting Jesus,
who was tempted as we are, and who knows what it means to be
human. Someone once said that temptation arises when you’re
tired and weary, and the devil comes along and makes a per-
fectly reasonable suggestion. Jesus shows us that, with his help,
we too can overcome our temptations, reasonable as they may
sound. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co

MARK YOUR CALENDARS—LENT MISSION—APRIL 1 & 2 at 6:30 pm Saint Anthony of Padua has been called the Apostle of Forgiveness, perhaps because he calls for-
giveness a “‘spiritual almsgiving,’ without which all good things lack the reward of eternal life.”
By exploring some of the writings of the Evangelical Doctor, we will consider what it means to
forgive and how we might be moved to forgiveness so as to attain salvation.
A priest of the Diocese of Springfield in Illinois, Father Daren J. Zehnle was ordained a priest in
2005. He currently serves as Pastor of St. Augustine Parish in Ashland, Illinois, Adjutant Judicial
Vicar, Judge on the Diocesan Tribunal, Episcopal Delegate for Matrimonial Concerns, and
Director of the Office for Divine Worship and the Catechumenate. His hobbies include reading,
particularly the works of J.R.R. Tolkien, hiking, and playing board games.
WANT MORE FROM SCIPTURE? Want more from Scripture than just hearing it once
during Mass? Are you searching for
deeper meaning in GOD’S Word? All
ages are invited, welcome, encouraged to
come join with our Pastor and other pa-
rishioners of all ages to read, meditate,
contemplate and pray over the weekend Readings – It is
called Lectio Divina …

Monday, March 18 at 6 pm
Thursday, March 28 at 5:15 pm
Thursday, April 4 at 5:15 pm
Monday, April 8 at 6 pm

of Willie Jaggers, both former parishioners and partici-
pants in RCIA, passed away Friday March 8 after a week
in ICU and a brief time in Hardin Memorial Hospice care.
Her funeral was the following Monday in Brandenburg,
Ky. where she resided. Her wish was for memorials to St.
Jude’s Hospital. She asked her son to “let the people know
that my time at St. Anthony’s was most satisfying and
blessed.” Jane suffered congestive heart failure but was
able to express her love the day before passing and that
friends here in our parish were cherished. Prayers are of-
