Prayers for Our Military Troops
Perhaps you, too, love a service member. Or maybe, because you’ve served in the past or know someone
who has, you understand the sacrifices these men and women make to guard our safety and preserve our freedom. We invite you to join us as we pray for
the men and women who serve.
Almighty and eternal God, those who take refuge in you will be glad and forever will shout for joy.
Protect these soldiers as they discharge their duties. Protect them with the shield of your strength and
keep them safe from all evil and harm. May the power of your love enable them to return home in safety,
that with all who love them, they may ever praise you for your loving care.
We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

SAINT ELIZABETH ANN SETON (1774-1821) January 4
Though her liturgical designation is “Religious,” Elizabeth Seton, her feast-day prayer reminds us, was also
wife, mother, educator, foundress. Born into a wealthy Episcopalian family, Elizabeth married William Seton, whose untimely death in Italy where the young family
sought healing for William’s tuberculosis, left her, at twenty-nine, a widow with five children.
Inspired by the faith and charity of the Italian family with whom they stayed, Elizabeth embraced Catholicism
despite her family’s disowning her and ceasing financial support. This woman of many firsts (and several voca-tions!) opened the first free Catholic school, beginning
the American Catholic educational system, and founded the first American religious community for women, the
Sisters of Charity. The tuberculosis that claimed her husband took also her oldest and youngest daughters and, finally, at just forty-seven, Elizabeth herself. Another first:
in 1975 she was canonized the first native-born American saint. Once asked to summarize her spirituali-ty, she replied: “Faith lifts the staggering soul on one side, hope supports it on the other, experience says it must be,
and love says let it be!” —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

LIGHT OF THE WORLD
Epiphany can be understood as an extension of the Nativity of the Lord that we celebrate on December 25. While at Christmas we celebrate Jesus’ coming as the long-awaited king and Messiah of the Jewish people, on Epiphany we celebrate the revelation that Jesus is the Savior and Light of all nations—Jews, Gentiles, and all people. The star shines so brightly that it attracts magi who come from far distant countries to worship Jesus. They are not Jews, yet they are drawn to the Light of the world. The letter to the Ephesians reveals that the Light of the world was for the Gentiles as well as the Jews—Christ gathers all people into the light of his love. The reading from Isaiah also describes a gathering of diverse peoples, but this time it is to the light that emanates from the people of God. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
KINGLY GIFTS
This day in many parts of the world is called Three Kings Day because of today’s Gospel reading about the visit of the three kings or magi to see the child Jesus. The church’s name for the day, Epiphany, is based on a Greek word that means “to reveal” or “make visible.” Here, the child Jesus is honored not by his own people—and certainly not King Herod—but by strangers from afar. Only Matthew’s Gospel tells their story. There are not many details about the magi, but pious legends have built up around them over the centuries. A modern version is the operetta Amahl and the Night Visitors, which used to be seen on television at this time of year. The Jewish hope for centuries had been that a Messiah, God’s Anointed One, would be sent to the Jewish people to
save them from their sins and deliver them from their enemies.
But here we see that God reveals the Son not just to the Jews but to the Gentiles, people like us who are also seeking a Savior, one whom they recognize with joy. We have expected the Savior all through Advent; we have celebrated the wonderful gift of his birth during Christmas; and now, in this new calendar year, what gifts will we present to him in return? New Year’s resolutions often include a decision to work off all those the extra pounds that we have gained from all our feasting and celebrating. That is all well and good as far as it goes, but why not resolve to do something extra for those you love and something more for the community in which you live? Show the love of God that is at work in your heart, or as Saint Francis of Assisi is thought to have said, “Preach the gospel at all times. When necessary, use words.” Copyright ©

REGALOS REALES

—Miguel Arias, Karapatang magpalathala © J. S. Paluch Co.

“They were overjoyed at seeing the star and on entering
the house they saw the child with Mary his mother. They prostrated themselves and did him homage.” -Ma hew 2:10-
11
When the magi came into the baby Jesus’ presence they were immediately overjoyed and fell prostrate to honor him. It was
tradi onal for people to kneel down in front of a king to do him homage. Did you know that we too are called to show our
King honor every single week? Who is our King? Jesus, of course! And we come into his presence in a special
way every me we come to Mass. What is one way we can show him honor, as the magi did? One way is to genuflect
slowly and reverently each me we enter his house. This is a sign of great honor, respect and love. In fact, each me you
come into church and get ready to enter the pew, you should genuflect, make the Sign of the Cross and tell Jesus you love
him. How honored our King must feel to be shown such respect and love!
Dear Father, thank you for giving us such a wonderful King to honor. May we always show him the love he
deserves.
What are some other ways we can show honor to our King Jesus?
Questions to discuss after Mass….

Interpretation of the Visit of the Magi— The story of the Visit of the Magi makes an important point about the role of the Messiah. Jesus is called “the newborn king of the Jews” by the magi (astrologers) who travel from the east. Jesus was not to become a political King of the Jews to de-throne Herod or even the emperor; he was to usher in a new kingdom that extended beyond political regimes.
Wise Men Still Follow Him Blessing of the Home on Epiphany—We invite you to adopt this custom in your family. The family gathers to ask God’s blessing on their home and on those who live in or visit the home. It is an invitation for Jesus to be a daily guest in our home, our comings and goings, our conversations, our work and play, our joys and sorrows. A traditional way of doing this is to use chalk to write above the homes entrance 20 + M + C + B + 20 The letters C,M, B have two meanings. They are the initiations of the traditional names of the three magi: Caspar, Melchior, and Balthazar. They also abbreviate the Latin words Christus Mansionem Benedicat, “May Christ bless this house.” The “+” signs represents the cross and 20 20 represents the year (2020). Using chalk, mark the lintel of your front door (or front porch step) as follows: 20 + C + M + B + 20
While saying: God of Light, bless our home. Make it a haven of rest for all those in need
of your warmth and care. And when we go out from this place,
may we never lose sight of that Epiphany star. We mark our door with the symbols of the Magi.
May all who enter, throughout the year, find love and light,
for Christ has come to dwell in this home and in these hearts. Amen

On January 6, The Feast of the Epiphany, the Church celebrates the biblical event where the Magi, also called the Three Wise Men or Three Kings, traveled from the East to ay homage to the newborn King, Jesus Christ. Many believed that this is the date when the Christmas
season officially ended. However, according to the Roman Catholic liturgical calendar, Ordinary time
does not begin until the Monday after the Feast of Baptism of the Lord, which (usually) falls on the
Sunday after Epiphany.
