Explanation of the Mark Series The Gospel of Mark is an action-packed account of Jesus’ life. In 16 brief chapters, Mark reports the significant claims and actions of Jesus, giving special attention to the events leading up to his death. Mark shows us that Jesus isn’t just one dimensional, but the fulfilment of the greatest hopes for all of humanity. Over 12 weeks, we’ll be exploring who Jesus is and why he matters to us today. This will help us to answer: Who do you say that I am?

6. Who should we listen to? (We should listen to Jesus.)

7. How do we listen to Jesus? (We can listen to Jesus in lots of ways. Praying to him at anytime, reading what he has to say in the Bible, trying to listen to what the Holy Spirit prompts us to do.)

8. How can we be reminded of God’s glory? (Worship at church on Sundays helps us to be reminded of God. We can also be reminded when we look at everything God has made - from the stars, to the mountains, to the flowers, and the birds. These remind us how great and amazing our God is!)

Prayer Heavenly Father, thank you for showing us who Jesus really is - your Son, our God, full of glory! We thank you that you came down to earth and invite every person to be with you forever. Thank you for making this possible through the death and resurrection of Jesus. Please help us this week to be reminded of your presence everyday. In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.

Discussion Questions Read Mark 9:2-8 from the Bible Story (page 1-3)

1. What amazing things have already happened that indicate Jesus is important? (When Jesus was baptised, God declared from heaven that Jesus is God’s son, whom he loves and is pleased with. Jesus has performed incredible miracles - healing, removing evil, calming a storm, feeding 5000 people. He has forgiven people’s sins, which only God can do.)

2. If you could pick two people to talk with from the Old Testament, who would they be? (Before the disciples two of the most important heroes of the Jews appeared - Moses and Elijah.)

3. Who were Moses and Elijah? (They were people used by God to point many people to God. Moses was chosen by God to lead the people out of slavery and through the desert to the promised land. God did amazing miracles through Elijah to point out that God is in control and the true Lord of all.)

4. Of these three people - Moses, Elijah, and Jesus - who stands out the most? Why? ( Jesus does. Everything points to him.)

5. What are the clues that Jesus is God, and God’s son? ( Jesus’ clothes become so white they shone, Moses and Elijah appear, clouds cover the mountain, and God’s voice is heard saying Jesus is his son!)

6. With all this happening, it would have been overwhelming! Why do you think Peter wanted to build three shelters? (Peter is really scared and didn’t know what to say. He suggests the first thing which comes to mind - which is traditionally God’s people have only ever been able to safely approach God through the tabernacle or temple. This is where God came to be with his people, but he is now with us in Jesus.)

7. How can we be in God’s presence today? (When we worship together, with all God’s people on a Sunday, is a powerful way we are reminded and brought into the presence of God. The Holy Spirit is always with us, and we can be reminded of God everyday, wherever we are. Maybe looking at the stars, a garden, the ocean, or the mountains reminds you of God. Praying, and reading the Bible can also be another helpful way to hear from God.)

8. What are you going to do this week to be reminded of God’s presence?

9. Did the disciples expect Jesus to rise from the dead? (No. Even when Jesus told them that is what would happen, we see that they still don’t understand what this means.)

Prayer Heavenly Father, thank you for showing us who Jesus really is - your Son, our God, full of glory! We thank you that you came down to earth and invite every person to be with you forever.
