St Bart’s Kids on Sundays Children’s Ministry Package WEEK 8 of 12 Explanation of Resources This material has been developed to resource the St Bart’s Kids on Sundays program. Included within this package are resources for crèche (children aged 1-2 years old), preschool (children aged 3 years old), and Sunday school (children in Years Kindy to Year 6). Our Sunday School curriculum focuses upon Biblical literacy and provides opportunities for both multi- age engagement (all-in teaching, games, worship) and small group learning (discussion, prayer, activity). Both our Crèche and Preschool curriculums are play-based in nature and allow children to learn about the focus Bible passage in a variety of modes - be it role play, discovery, games, art, music, and more. How to structure a Kids Program Having a clear and consistent structure each week, will help your children get the most out of this curriculum. We have found it necessary to structure in elements such as settling in time (for early years) and small group discussions (Sunday School) to help children build connections with each other and the team. Games (Sunday School) have been strategically placed before the small group time so that children have an opportunity to run and move before being asked to sit in a circle, listen, and participate in discussions. Similarly, we use morning tea (Crèche and Preschool only) as a great way to focus the children so they can listen to the story and main message of the day (little people generally love to eat quite frequently so it also helps keep them happy!). The songs we use for worship are linked directly to the day’s topic, but are dierent in style to those used in Church. We have found the children love to use their whole body when their worship, so we dance, do actions, and have a wonderful time singing. St Bart’s Kids on Sundays Children’s Ministry Package • WEEK 8 of 12

Explanation of Resources This material has been developed to resource the St Bart’s Kids on Sundays program. Included within this package are resources for crèche (children aged 1-2 years old), preschool (children aged 3 years old), and Sunday school (children in Years Kindy to Year 6).

Our Sunday School curriculum focuses upon Biblical literacy and provides opportunities for both multi-age engagement (all-in teaching, games, worship) and small group learning (discussion, prayer, activity).

The songs we use for worship are linked directly to the day’s topic, but are different in style to those used in Church. We have found the children love to use their whole body when their worship, so we dance, do actions, and have a wonderful time singing.

How to Use We would love to see children and families growing as disciples of Jesus - so please feel free to use any of these resources at your church, school or at home. To use these materials,

• Think about the age ranges of your children, and how you could best arrange groups for discussion and activities.

• Download the year level required. If you are a family or from a smaller children’s ministry setting, we would advise you look through this week’s resources and aim for a year level roughly in the middle of the ages present in your family/church. There is a summary Teaching Table at the end of this document that may help guide your choice.

You will find most of these resources can be adapted to groups of varied sizes, albeit with some creativity!

This is a free, printable resource, available via download. Multiple copies can be made to resource your family or church. We do ask however, that you don’t upload these resources on your own webpage.

For further information Please contact us on [email protected] if you require any more information regarding our Children’s Ministry resources.

Games (K-P) ‘The Money and the Key’

LINK: We are all given special gifts. Do we use those gifts or do we hide them?

Have all of the children sit in a circle, facing inwards, with their hands behind their backs, opened. One child is to remain standing, outside the circle, holding a coin and a key. The group sings this song and the child with the coin walks around the outside of the circle, quietly leaving the key in one child’s hand and the coin in the other. They must be seated back in the circle before the end of the song. The song finishes with a call and response of ‘who has the money’ and ‘who has the key’.

The music score for this can be found at https://musescore.com/user/24296/scores/42604

Games (1-6) ‘Talent Challenge’ relay

Link: We are all given talents. Some of us are good at different things to others. We can choose to use our gifts or to store them up for ourselves.

Play this game as a challenge for teams (or individually if you are playing as a family).

Have each member have a water bottle (disposable is best) that is half full of water and sealed tightly. Have them hold the bottle and flip it in the air and try and get it to land right way up on the table/surface. They continue to have multiple turns until they get it landing the correct way.

Once they have flipped it, they take a coin and place it into a jar/money box and the next person has a turn.

See who can collect the most amount of coins at the end of the game (feel free to set a time limit for the game).

Additional Useful Family Resources:

Multimedia:

The Parable of the Watchful Servant by Strength in Scripture

(recommended for upper primary to watch and discuss with their parents).

Activities:

Host a talent show in your backyard or living room, getting each family member to prepare and showcase something that they are good at.

Set up a Challenge Course - with three or four activity stations with simple directions posted at each. Examples could include:

• Count backward from 50 to 1

• Recite the alphabet

• Alternate hopping on one foot and clapping for one minute

• Write one compliment for each of your family members (provide paper and pencils).

Preschool Session Outline

Snacktime Negotiate (in advance) between crèche team on duty who will bring snacks. Suggested snacks include: fresh fruit (bananas, strawberries, grapes – to be cut in half lengthways, apple slices, watermelon, etc); sultanas, cheese cubes; crackers (water or rice crackers, rice/corn cakes – cut in half, milk arrowroot biscuits, etc). (Please no nuts).

Activity/Craft Reading

During snacktime, read the scripture from the Preschool Bible Folder. This week’s scripture will focus on Matthew 25:14–30.

Interactive Story

Use the large Visual Storytelling resources to help retell today’s story. Show each coin bag as you talk about each servant and the moneybags they were given and what they produced. Do some counting with the children as you talk about the total number of moneybags at the end of the story (i.e., 5+5=10, 2+2=4, 1+0=1).

How can I use the gifts God has given me - Application Posters

Talk with the children about how today’s story talks about the servants getting coins but remind the children that this is not the only thing that God gives us. Brainstorm some of the things God has given us (e.g., activities you enjoy doing or are good at, fruit of the spirit you are good at: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.) Then talk about how you might be able to use these gifts. Show the application posters - talking through each one. Then display these on the wall.

Lift the Flap Colouring/Activity Sheet

Cut along the dotted lines on page 1. Using a glue stick, spread glue around the edge of the back of 1 (pictures of the three servants), but leave the bottom of the page glue-free. Adhere this on top of page 2, carefully lining up the edges. Lift up the flaps and create a firm fold. Close the flaps and guide the children to write down how many bags of gold each servant was given (5, 2, 1). Then lift each flap and write down how many bags of gold each servant had at the end of the story (10, 4, 1). Allow the children to colour in the picture. See if the children are able to retell the story to you at the end.

Coins

Hide some coins around the preschool space and have the children try and find them all. Bring all the coins together and place in a ‘money box’, counting each coin as you add them in.

Prayer Use one of the grace posters to give thanks before eating. Point to the icons and the words as you say this together before snack time.

Dear God, thank you for all of the gifts you give us. With the help of your Holy Spirit, help us to use these gifts as we follow and trust you. Amen.

The Parable of the Three Servants

“The kingdom of heaven is like this: A man left three servants in

charge of his money.

They were all given different amounts of gold.

One was given 5 bags.

Another was given 2 bags.

The last was given 1 bag.

The 1st servant went and put his money to

work, earning five more bags.

The one with the two bags of gold earned

two more.

But the last servant went and dug a hole in the ground and hid his master’s money in it.

When the master returned from his trip, he asked for his money.

The first two servants came and showed the master what

they had been able to do with the money,

producing more bags of gold than they were given.

The master was very proud and promised

them great things.

Then the last servant told the master that he had

hidden the money, doing nothing with it.
