THE LITURGY OF THE WORD

The Lesson Romans 12:1–18

I appeal to you therefore, brothers and sisters, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your minds, so that you may discern what is the will of God—what is good and acceptable and perfect. For by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think of yourself more highly than you ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, each according to the measure of faith that God has assigned. For as in one body we have many members, and not all the members have the same function, so we, who are many, are one body in Christ, and individually we are members one of another. We have gifts that differ according to the grace given to us: prophecy, in proportion to faith; ministry, in ministering; the teacher, in teaching; the exhorter, in exhortation; the giver, in generosity; the leader, in diligence; the compassionate, in cheerfulness. Let love be genuine; hate what is evil, hold fast to what is good; love one another with mutual

affection; outdo one another in showing honor. Do not lag in zeal, be ardent in spirit, serve the Lord. Rejoice in hope, be patient in suffering, persevere in prayer. Contribute to the needs of the saints; extend hospitality to strangers. Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them. Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep. Live in harmony with one another; do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly; do not claim to be wiser than you are. Do not repay anyone evil for evil, but take thought for what is noble in the sight of all. If it is possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all.

Reader The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God.

The Holy Gospel Mark 9:33–37

At the Announcement, all say Glory to you, Lord Christ. Then Jesus and the disciples came to Capernaum; and when Jesus was in the house he asked them, “What were you arguing about on the way?” But they were silent, for on the way they had argued with one another who was the greatest. He sat down, called the twelve, and said to them, “Whoever wants to be first must be last of all and servant of all.” Then he took a little child and put it among them; and taking it in his arms, he said to them, “Whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me, and whoever welcomes me welcomes not me but the one who sent me.”

Anthem “Where charity and love prevail” William K. Trafka

Composed on behalf of St. Bartholomew’s parish in honor of The Rev. F. M. “Buddy” Stallings on the occasion of his Institution as the twelfth Rector of St. Bartholomew’s Church.

Sung by the Combined ChoirsJeff Morrissey, Baritone Soloist

Where charity and love prevail there God is ever found;brought here together by Christ’s love by love are we thus bound.

With grateful joy and holy fear his charity we learn;let us with heart and mind and strength now love him in return.

Forgive we now each other’s faults as we our faults confess;and let us love each other well in Christian holiness.

Let strife among us be unknown, let all contention cease;be his the glory that we seek, be ours his holy peace.

Let us recall that in our midst dwells God’s begotten Son;as members of his Body joined we are in him made one.

Love can exclude no race nor creed if honored be God’s Name;our common life embraces all whose Father is the same.

The Great ThanksgivingPresider The Lord be with you.People And also with you.Presider Lift up your hearts.People We lift them to the Lord.Presider Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.People It is right to give him thanks and praise. The Presider proceeds It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. Through the great shepherd of your flock, Jesus Christ our Lord; who after his resurrection sent forth his apostles to preach the Gospel and to teach all nations; and promised to be with them always, even to the end of the ages.

Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name:

Sanctus and Benedictus Communion Service in F Major Harold Darke

Martha Sullivan, Soprano; Eliza Bagg, Alto; Christopher Carter, Tenor; Raphael Biran, Bass

Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of Hosts:Heaven and earth are full of thy glory.Glory be to thee, O Lord Most High.

Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord,Hosanna in the highest.

The Presider continues We give thanks to you, O God, for the goodness and love which you have made known to us in creation; in the calling of Israel to be your people; in your Word spoken through the prophets; and above all in the Word made flesh, Jesus, your Son. For in these last days you sent him to be incarnate from the Virgin Mary, to be the Savior and Redeemer of the world. In him, you have delivered us from evil, and made us worthy to stand before you. In him, you have brought us out of error into truth, out of sin into righteousness, out of death into life.

On the night before he died for us, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.”

After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”

Therefore, according to his command, O Father,

Presider and PeopleWe remember his death,We proclaim his resurrection,We await his coming in glory; And we offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to you, O Lord of all; presenting to you, from your creation, this bread and this wine.

We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts that they may be the Sacrament of the Body of Christ and his Blood of the new Covenant. Unite us to your Son in his sacrifice, that we may be acceptable through him, being sanctified by the Holy Spirit. In the fullness of time, put all things in subjection under your Christ, and bring us to that heavenly country where, with all your saints, we may enter the everlasting heritage of your sons and daughters; through Jesus Christ our Lord, the firstborn of all creation, the head of the Church, and the author of our salvation.

By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. AMEN.

And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say,

The Lord’s PrayerOur Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

At the Breaking of the BreadPresider Alleluia. Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us.People Therefore let us keep the feast. Alleluia.

Fairest Lord Jesus,Ruler of all nature,O thou of God of man the Son;thee will I cherish, thee will I honor, thou, my soul’s glory, joy, and crown.

Fair are the meadows, fairer still the woodlands, robed in the blooming garb of spring:Jesus is fairer,Jesus is purer, who makes the woeful heart to sing.

Fair is the sunshine, fairer still the moonlight, and all the twinkling, starry host:Jesus shines brighter,Jesus shines purer, than all the angels heaven can boast.
