St Bart’s Kids Small Group Session Outline

Main Point: The Holy Spirit is the helper that Jesus promises to send us. The Spirit will point to Jesus, guide us, help us say the right words, and change people to believe in Jesus.

Discussion Questions Read John 15:26-16:7 from the Bible Story (pages 1-2)

1. What words are used to describe the Holy Spirit? How would you describe him? (The Holy Spirit is sometimes described as our Friend, as the Spirit of Truth. He is God, who plays a special role in pointing us to Jesus and helping soften hearts.)

2. Where does the Holy Spirit come from? (The Spirit is from the Father and is sent to us by Jesus.)

3. Why was it a good thing that Jesus needed to go away? (God’s Plan A was not that Jesus would hang around earth forever, but that he would go to the cross. Jesus had to leave to die for us, in order to defeat death and sin forever. He has gone to be with the Father, in order to prepare a place for us to be with God. But, he didn’t leave us alone, but sent us the Spirit who is always with us.)

Read John 16:8-16:15 from the Bible Story (pages 3-5)

4. What things does the Spirit point out in our hearts? (The Spirit does a lot of work inside of us - showing us when we are wrong, guilty, where we have sinned, what is right and what is God’s judgement. He points to Jesus, so that people will see him and believe in him.)

5. Who actually changes people to believe in Jesus - you or the Spirit? (The Spirit changes peoples hearts, but he also actively uses us. He gives us words to say, or might bring a person to our mind to pray for or talk to, and helps us to believe and trust in Jesus.)

6. Does this mean we can sit back and do nothing? (No - remember the Spirit is our helper. God wants us to point to Jesus: ‘You must also be witnesses about me.’ The Spirit has the power to help us, knows God perfectly, but God still involves us with his mission.)

7. How does it make you feel to know that you are never alone?

8. Think about one person who you know, who doesn’t know Jesus. How could you remember to pray for them, that the Spirit would help them to trust and love Jesus?

Prayer Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for the best news ever that Jesus loves us, died for us and rose again. Thank you for the gift of the Holy Spirit. Please help us to not trust ourselves, but trust and rely on the Holy Spirit. We pray for the one person we know who doesn’t yet know you. Please change their hearts, so they would see the life that Jesus offers! Amen.

26 “I will send the Friend to you from the Father. He

is the Spirit of truth, who comes out from the Father. When the Friend

comes to help you, he will be a witness about

me. 27 You must also be witnesses about me. That’s because

you have been with me from the beginning.

Unless I go away, the Friend will not come to help you. But if I go, I will send him to

you.

guilty. He will prove that they are wrong about sin and

about what is right and about God’s
