Stewardship by the Book October 13, 2019

Twenty-eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time Jesus healed ten lepers in today’s Gospel. Only one (10%) came back to say thank you. I, too, have received many blessings from the Lord - indeed, all I am and all I have is a gift! How and how often have I

remembered to thank Him?

From the Desk of Father Haan

Holy Water and House Blessings One of the distinguishing aspects of our beautiful Catholic faith is our “sacramental” view of the world… we believe that God has configured the universe in such a way that the things of this world hint at traces of God as our Creator and Re-deemer. God works through His creation, rather than against it, to reveal Himself and sanctify us. This not only refers to the seven Sacraments, where God takes ordinary elements (water, oil, bread, wine, etc.) and makes them means of bestowing His divine grace. It also refers to sacramentals, which are holy, physical things that raise the mind to God and draw us clos-er to Him. That’s why Catholic churches are filled with stained glass windows, statues, incense, and holy water. But this way of seeing and living should not be confined to the interior of a church. That’s why we fill our homes and gardens with crucifixes and statues, sacred art and sacred music. One sacramental I’d like to highlight this week is holy water. A quick theological refresher:

Holy water is blessed by God (through a priest) in virtue of Christ’s baptism. By entering into the waters of the Jordan to be baptized, Jesus made all water capable of imparting sacramental grace. As a sacramental, holy water receives its power through the prayer and authority of the Church.

We have fonts filled with Holy Water for blessings for three reasons: for protection from evil, as a reminder of our Baptism, and as a sign of repentance of sin. The rite of blessing said over water by a priest to make it holy contains prayers of exorcism. It can banish demons, heal the sick, and give us sustaining and protective grace. Blessing our-selves with holy water reminds us of the dignity and great graces we received at our own baptism. The baptismal prom-ises we made include renouncing Satan and disdaining sin.

You will notice that I’ve placed the metal holy water receptacle in the back of the church near the entrance. You’ll also no-tice small plastic bottles for holy water. I invite each family to take a bottle, fill it with holy water, and take it home with you. How are you to use it in your home? A few ideas:

Bless yourself each day before going off to work or school.

Bless your children by making the sign of the cross with holy water on their foreheads.

Sprinkle your room and your bed before going to sleep each night for protection and peace. There is no specific prayer to pray when using holy water, other than making the Sign of the Cross. Other options include the St. Michael Prayer, the Our Father, or something simple as this: “By this holy water and by Your Precious Blood, wash away all my sins, O Lord. Amen.” Whenever your bottle becomes empty, bring it to church and fill it up again! Beyond this, I’d like to mention that if you’ve never had your house blessed by a priest, this is a wonderful practice to pro-tect your home from all spiritual dangers. Please contact the office if you’d like to schedule a house blessing. Let’s make our homes “domestic churches,” where we begin to see the world through a sacramental lens. Under the Mercy, Father Haan “From long experience I have learned that there is nothing like holy water to put devils to flight and prevent them from coming back again. They also flee from the Cross, but return; so holy water must have great virtue. For my own part, when-ever I take it, my soul feels a particular and most notable consolation.” —St. Teresa of Avila Pray for the Sick Let us pray for these sick: Virgil Schutter, Jack Allison, Kim Dahnke, Collette Lavelle, Ron Sondgerath, Amber Brost, Janet Schutter, Dick Bowman, Mark Cochran, Jason Cole, Brian Lemenager, Staci Wittenauer, Mary Reed, Sharon Eberle, Glenn Barnard, Cooper Gretencord, Mark McMaster, Donna Cooley, Charlie Senesac, Ray Muller, Nancy Barrett, Gail Muller and Annette Raub. Diocese of Hinche, Haiti Mission Appeal Next weekend Father Jackson Colon from the Diocese of Hinche, Haiti will be here to share his faith and the ministry of the church and its seminary system in Hinche. We will have a second collection for the diocese so please be generous. We ask that you keep the people of Hinche, Haiti in your prayers.
