Stewardship by the Book Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

August 1/2, 2020 In today’s Gospel we find an equation the disciples of

Jesus couldn’t solve: Five loaves and two fish divided by 5,000-plus people. They failed to recognize Jesus in the equation; that whatever they had to offer, Jesus

could take it and bless it and satisfy the hunger of the crowd with it. Good stewards recognize that the Lord can work miracles with the gifts they offer to a hungry

and broken world. How often are we willing to offer our gifts in faith, even during disquieting times, even as in-significant as we think they are, and count on the Lord to do the rest? How often do we count Christ into the

equation?

Would you pray for a priest each day this week?

Prayers for Vocations Eternal God, Open wide the doors of our hearts to your Son, Jesus Christ. Help us, and all who desire to serve you, to know how to respond to your call. Through the gift of baptism you invite us to witness to the grace of your love. Bless all women and men whom you call to serve the church as priest, deacons, sisters, or brothers. May they be bold and joyful witnesses to the presence of your Incarnate Son, and to the breath of the Spirit in our world. Amen.

Stewardship by the Book Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

August 2, 2020

In today’s Gospel, Jesus feeds the five thousand with five loaves and two fish. The message of

stewardship is that God’s gifts, shared, will always be more than enough.

Bulletin Article by Seminarian Jason Diebolt A sower went out to sow Throughout this summer, I have noticed many parishioners who love God and His Church who are willing to generously spend their time in service to others. This beautiful witness has not gone unnoticed, and I am so thankful for my summer at St. Charles and St. Patrick. Throughout the last few weeks, we have heard in the Gospel about the parable of the sower. Jesus starts off

by saying, “A sower went out to sow.” God is the one who plants the seed in our hearts to hear His Word and proclaim it without reservation. It is only with the help of God and His Church where we can go out as God’s instrument to the world and plant this seed to every corner of society. It has been a blessing for me to see this zeal. We are approaching a change in our parishes, and I encourage each and every one of you to continue the mission that Jesus has set out for us in this para-ble. Our hearts will continually be transformed to the heart of Christ as we continue to pray and preach the Gospel. In the second letter of St. Paul to the Corinthians, he addresses this parable. He says, “The one who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will supply and multiply your seed and increase the harvest of your righteousness.” The more and more we bring the Gospel to others, the more it will spread to even more people. The seed that starts with one can produce an abundant harvest in the end. These parables that Jesus teaches in the Gospels help us to understand the Kingdom of God. Jesus wants his followers to understand how to live a holy life and He does this with practical examples, like the sower. It is with faith that we take this practical example and apply it to our own lives. It has been a great honor to be with you these last two months and to get to know so many of you. As I leave, please know that I am so grateful for my experience. I have learned so much from you, and I will take these experiences with me on my next journey. Please know of my prayers for both of the parishes as I head to seminary in St. Louis. May God bless you, Seminarian Jason Diebolt Support the Solidarity Fund for the Church in Africa This week, we take up the collection for the Solidarity Fund for the Church in Africa. The people of Africa are joyous and faith-filled, but they also face challenges due to poverty, high rates of disease, food shortages, and migration. This collection is an opportunity to stand with the people of Africa and support pastoral projects that this continent so needs. Please be gen-erous today. To learn more, visit www.usccb.org/africa. Farewell Party All are invited to an outdoor Farewell Party for Father Haan and the three Seminarians, Matt, Elliot and Jason on Friday, August 7 from 5 - 8 PM at St. Patrick’s on the lawn. Bring your lawn chair and come enjoy some ice cream while you say your goodbyes. Presentation of Gifts will be at 6:00 PM. For those who do not feel comfortable in a crowd, we invite you to say your goodbyes using the drive-thru receiving line from 4 - 5 PM. Passion Driven Stewardship How many times in the bible do we read, “Fear not”, “Be not afraid”, and “Take Courage”? We are not called to be frightened, but to be strong, confident and joyful. Yes, I said joyful! We are called to be joyful even in the midst of crisis and struggles. Even in times when we are physi-cally separated from our families, and our spiritual brothers and sisters. Like true love, true joy is more than a feeling. It is a commitment. It is how we think. It is our mindset, and it is our actions, even when we do not feel joyful.

In the midst of the current crisis, your parishes have made joyful noise in your local communities. They are working hard to help you stay connected to your parish, your fellow parishioners and to continue to serve those in need. How about making some joyful noise of your own? Your passion is what speaks to your individual heart and motivates your action. We are all called to passionately steward the gifts of our time, talent and treasure across each of the four quadrants of stewardship: Hospitality, Prayer, Formation and Ser-vice, as we bring the corporal and spiritual works of mercy to others. What is God placing on your heart?

Lead a virtual group of prayer-warriors who pray the Rosary and Divine Chaplet of Mercy or the Liturgy of the Hours

Offer to help your parish set up technology to keep connected with parishioners

Utilize your talents to help virtually teach youth or adult religious education

Make calls to families that joined your parish in the last few months to make sure they feel connected and part of your Church community

In addition to your time and skills, your parish also needs your financial help to maintain all their good works. Please keep in mind that your parishes have not been receiving the Offertory Gifts that they typically received at Mass each week due to the quarantine. Perhaps you can mail in your offering, or transition to a recurring on-line gift. You may also be in a position to help make up the difference for your fellow parishioners who have been impacted financially during this recent crisis. I know you need your local parish. Please know that they need you too. This not a time to be fearful, but a time to make joyful noise. Mike MacNulty is the director of stewardship and development for the diocese. Pray for the Sick Let us pray for these sick: Jack Allison, Kim Dahnke, Collette Lavelle, Amber Brost, Janet Schutter, Mark Cochran, Jason Cole, Staci Wittenauer, Mary Reed, Sharon Eberle, Glenn Barnard, Cooper Gretencord, Mark McMaster, Charlie Senesac, Nancy Barrett, Gail Muller, Tim Booth and Samantha Klemme. Donations Needed The Community Food and Services Co-op is in ongoing need of your generous donations. The suggested item of donation for this month is ADULT DEPENDS & DISPOSABLE BABY DIAPERS. You can place your donation in the box at the back of church at St. Charles or the gray tote in the garage at St. Patrick’s. Thank you for your support. “For I was hungry and you fed me.”
