Stewardship by the Book Third Sunday of Lent

March 15, 2020

When Jesus asked the Samaritan woman for a drink of water, He opened the door for a life-

changing relationship with Him. Scripture says her testimony drew many others to Him as well.

We, too, must be ready to respond whenever and wherever the Lord speaks to us and be prepared

for it to change our lives!

Bulletin Article by Seminarian Matt Jakupco Even during the season of Lent, the Church still gives us times to celebrate and rejoice in the great saints who gave witness to Jesus Christ. This week in particular we celebrate two important saints, both for our local church here in Benton County, and for the universal Church. St. Patrick: On Tuesday, March 17 we celebrate the feast day of St. Patr ick. Beyond the secular celebrations of Ir ish culture, this day should be focused on commemorating the heroic virtue and missionary zeal of the saint himself! Born in either Scotland or England, Patrick was kidnapped and sent into slavery in Ireland. While in slavery, Patrick had a deep conversion, spending long hours in prayer. After escaping from slavery, Patrick was ordained a priest and made his way to Ireland to proclaim the Gospel. During his time of mission in Ireland, Patrick combated many of the false teachings of the time and the pagan religions that were prevalent in the area. During his close to thirty years in Ireland he is said to have ordained 350 bishops and converted thousands to the faith. Celebrate the feast day of St. Patrick (a solemnity for the church of St. Patrick in Oxford) by praying through his intercession to become a bold witness to Christ and His Church. Also make sure to go to the corn beef and cab-bage dinner! St. Joseph: On Thur sday, March 19, the entire Church celebrates the solemnity of St. Joseph. We hear the story of Joseph in the Gospels of Matthew and Luke and of his great love and care for our Lord and for the Blessed Mother. Though St. Joseph does not speak a single word in the entirety of Scripture, we are told that he is a “righteous man.” (Matthew 1:19) Joseph gives us an example of humility and openness to the will of God. Joseph also gives us the example of a man of great courage, as a father who protects his family, and as a hard worker in his role as carpenter. In 1870, Pope Pius IX declared St. Joseph as the patron saint of the universal Church. Pope St. John Paul II writes, “Joseph’s submission to God, this readiness of will to dedicate oneself to all that serves God, is really nothing less than that…expression of the virtue of religion.” In other words, St. Joseph’s life was completely centered on giving to God what is his due, specifically love, trust, and worship. St. Joseph is the model for husbands and for fathers, but also for all Catho-lics for his willingness to place his confidence in the Lord alone. Pray this Thursday for all fathers and husbands to follow the example of St. Joseph, and that all Catholics may live the life of discipleship he possessed! St. Patrick and St. Joseph…pray for us! Seminarian Matt Jakupco Sources: EWTN St. Patrick, the Apostle of Ireland; Pope St. John Paul II Redemptoris Custos
