Stewardship by the Book September 15, 2019

Twenty-fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time We can hear God speaking to us today in the

words of the father to his elder son: “You are with me always, and everything I have is yours.” What is my response to such remarkable generosity? Do I give

joyfully and generously as God gives to me?

From the Desk of Father Haan

Anointing of the Sick Last weekend, a couple people noticed that I did not make a customary monthly announcement at the end of Masses, inviting people to stay afterward to receive the Anointing of the Sick. It was not because I do not care about sick people! On the contrary, it is a priority for a priest to bring the presence of the Divine Physician to those who are ill or despair-ing. After a month of the weekend routine, it is clear to me that my time between Masses is already pretty tight, so add-ing an Anointing service isn’t an option. Instead, I want to encourage anyone who would like to be anointed to call the parish office or to e-mail me, and we can arrange for a time for this wonderful Sacrament. In the meantime, here is a quick explanation of the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick: who can receive it, when they should receive it, and what spiritual effects flow from it. Like all of the Sacraments of the Church, the Anointing of the Sick was implicitly instituted by Jesus Christ during his earthly ministry, and in a sense promulgated by the apostle James in his epistle, where he writes, “Are there any sick among you? Let him send for the priest of the Church; they should pray over him and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord, and the prayer of faith will save the sick person, and the Lord will raise him up. If he has committed any sins, he will be forgiven” (James 5:14-15). Not “anyone” can receive the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick. According to the Second Vatican Council, “As soon as one of the faithful begins to be in danger of death from sickness or old age, the fitting time for him to receive this sacrament has certainly already arrived.” (Sacrosantum Concilium 73). A person does not need to be on the “brink” of death, but the nature of the illness must be serious. Each time a Christian falls seriously ill, he may receive the Anointing of the Sick, and also when, after he has received it, the illness worsens. One may also receive the Sacrament before a major surgery. Only a priest can administer this Sacrament. According to the Council of Trent, it is a sacrament of the living, which means that it presupposes grace and is ordered to an increase of grace. Therefore, if the person is in the state of mortal sin, it is important for the sick to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation before receiving the Anointing (if it is at all possible). While many equate the Anointing with the “Last Rites,” these are not the same. The Last Rites should be done when death is imminent and certain, and includes Confession (when possible), Confirmation (if needed), the Anointing, Viati-cum (Holy Communion), Apostolic Pardon (plenary indulgence), and prayers for the dying.

According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church (#1532), below are the special graces of the Sacrament: - the uniting of the sick person to the passion of Christ, for his own good and that of the whole Church;  - the strengthening, peace, and courage to endure in a Christian manner the sufferings of illness or old age;  - the forgiveness of sins, if the sick person was not able to obtain it through the sacrament of Penance;  - the restoration of health, if it is conducive to the salvation of his soul;  - the preparation for passing over to eternal life. In this way, through the Anointing of the Sick, the church commends to God one of her children burdened with infirmity and makes the very infirmity a source of grace.
