Fr. Joe’s Journal El Diario del Padre Joe We begin Holy week. We continue our focus on mercy during Lent. We’re now near the most sacred days of the church year, the Sacred Triduum. These day give a special opportunity to focus on how God loves us. Whatever nationality, race, gender or age Our Lord suffers, dies and rises for us. The Love of God unites us. We are all brothers and sisters in Christ. I invite you to make a special effort to join us on Holy Thursday when we recall the institution of the sacrament of the Eucharist and our call to ser-vice; Good Friday when we recall the love God showed through the sacrifice of his Son; and the Easter Vigil, when we move from the sadness of death to the joy of new life. . I thank all those who organized special prayer opportunities during Lent. We have had a number of prayer opportunities both in English and Spanish. I thank all those who helped make these opportunities available, Please be generous to our Easter collection. The collection on Easter is one of our two main col-lections to supplement our ordinary collections. Reconciliation service: I thank the priests, dea-cons, staff and parishioners who helped with our penance service. Our nation, state and city: We continue to pray for our governments and their leaders that they might wisdom and compassion for those in need. We will have Stations of the Cross before our Good Friday service. The stations will help us prepare for the service that marks the second day of the sacred Tritium, the commemoration of the pas-sion and death of our Lord. We continue to do repairs and upgrades but we need your help. We continue our ongo-ing efforts at repairing and revitalizing our parish facilities. We need financial assistance in order to make these repairs. Your support through the regular collection, the Lenten appeal and at Easter make it possible to pay for these repairs. Coro de Niños sings at Archdiocesan gath-ering. I thank the children from our parish for their dedication to our parish through their singing. They sang at a recent archdiocesan concert. Continuamos la Semana Santa. Continuamos centrándonos en la misericordia durante la Cuaresma. Estamos cerca de los días más sagrados del año eclesial, el Sagrado Triduo. Estos días nos dan una oportunidad especial en centrarnos en como Dios nos ama. Cualquiera sea su nacionalidad, raza, genero o edad el Señor sufre, muere y resucita por nosotros. El amor de Dios nos une. Todos somos hermanos y hermanas en Cristo. Los invito a hacer un especial esfuerzo en participar en el Jueves Santo cuando recordamos la institución del sacramento de la Eucaristía y nuestro llamado al servicio, el Viernes Santo donde recordamos el amor que Dios nos mostró durante el sacrificio de su Hijo, y la Vigilia Pascual, don-de pasamos de la tristeza de la muerte a la alegría de la vida nueva.

Agradezco a todos los que organizaron oportunidades especiales de oración du-rante la Cuaresma. Tuvimos una variedad de opor-tunidades de oración en inglés y español. Agradezco a todos los que ayudaron a organizar estas oportunidades. Por favor sea generoso en nuestra colecta de Pascua. La colecta de Pascua es uno de las dos colectas principales que suplementan nuestras colectas ordinarias. Servicio de Reconciliación. Agradezco a los sa-cerdotes, diáconos, personal y feligreses que ayudaron con nuestro servicio penitencial. Nuestra nación, estado y ciudad. Continuamos rezando por nuestros gobiernos y sus lideres que sean guiados por sabiduría y compasión hacia los más necesi-tados.

Tendremos un Via Crucis antes del servi-cio del Viernes Santo. El via crucis nos prepara por el servicio que marca el segundo día del sagrado tri-duo. la conmemoración de la pasión y la muerte de nues-tro Señor. Seguimos haciendo arreglos y mejoras pe-ro necesitamos su ayuda. Continuamos nuestros continuos esfuerzos de arreglar y revitalizar nuestros edi-ficios. Necesitamos ayuda financiera para poder hacer estos arreglos. Su apoyo durante la colecta recular, la co-lecta de Cuaresma y en Pascua hace posible costear estos arreglos.

Palm Sunday of the Lord’s Passion

Misericordiae Vultus: The Face of Mercy is Pope Francis’ official decree announcing this Jubilee Year of Mercy. But Francis had already declared that Jesus “has shown the face of God’s mercy” back in 2013 on his first Palm Sunday as pope. Francis described Luke’s account of Jesus’ entrance into Jerusa-lem: “Crowds, celebrating, praise, blessing, peace: joy fills the air. Jesus has awakened great hopes, especially in the hearts of the sim-ple, the humble, the poor, the forgotten, those who do not matter in the eyes of the world. He understands human sufferings . . . has bent down to heal body and soul.” Entering Jerusa-lem, Jesus looks at all of us with love, Francis continued, at our sicknesses and sins. “A beau-tiful scene, full of light—the light of the love of Jesus” (Pope Francis, Palm Sunday homily, March 24, 2013). Sin embargo, el Domingo de Ramos de 2013, el Papa Francisco había anunciado que “Jesús ha mos-trado el rostro de la misericordia de Dios”. El Papa Francisco describe la historia del Evangelio de Lucas donde Jesús entra en Jerusalén así: “Gentío, fiesta, alabanza, bendición, paz. Se respira un clima de alegría. Jesús ha despertado en el corazón tantas es-peranzas, sobre todo entre la gente humilde, simple, pobre, olvidada, esa que no cuenta a los ojos del mundo. Él ha sabido comprender las miserias huma-nas, ha mostrado el rostro de misericordia de Dios y se ha inclinado para curar el cuerpo y el alma”. PASSION

The word “passion” connotes deep, focused en-gagement. It also relates to passivity, interestingly. The deeply passionate person in the Gospel narrative from Luke is Jesus. He appears passive, but he is not. He is wholly self-possessed and wholly present for the one day that begins on Thursday evening at his last meal with his apostles and ends with his burial before sunset the next day. Then follows the long Sabbath silence. The narrative of the Passion is read whole and without pause on the Palm Sunday of the Passion. This story, found in each of the Gospels, is unchang-ing. We are the ones who change. Each year, we bring ourselves with another year’s history to hear and heed the story we so badly need. Life has its way with us, and we look again to the Passion narratives to learn to follow. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

PASIÓN La palabra “pasión” conlleva un profundo y determi-nado compromiso. Pero es interesante que también tiene relación a la pasividad. La persona profundamente apasio-nada del relato evangélico de Lucas es Jesús. Parece pasi-vo pero no lo es. Está totalmente consciente de sí mismo y totalmente presente al día que comienza el jueves por la noche en su última cena con los apóstoles y termina con su entierro antes de la puesta del sol el día siguiente. En-tonces le sigue el largo silencio del sábado. El relato de la pasión se lee entero y sin pausa el Do-mingo de Ramos en la Pasión. Esta historia, que se en-cuentra en cada uno de los evangelios, no cambia. Somos nosotros los que cambiamos. Cada año, nos presentamos con otro año de historia para escuchar y hacerle caso a esta historia que tanta falta nos hace.
