Each year we are invited to view the beautiful story of Christmas through the lens of a particular Gospel. This year we ponder the coming of Jesus as narrated in Matthew’s gospel. In today’s Gospel we see through Joseph’s perspective. Mary and Joseph were pledged to be married but, all of a sudden, she was found to be with child. This course of events had to have been upsetting and confusing for Joseph but, being a man of strong faith, he rose to the occasion. Even in the midst of these unexpected events, he remained faithful to Mary and open to the unexpected events that God was bringing about in his life and in the world. To be a Christian is to live immersed in an unpredictable world, beset by real problems, without being overwhelmed by these. We face illness, defeats along the way, broken relationships, many forms of injustice and even the destruction of God's precious creation. Yet, even in this imperfect world, we encounter hope and healing; we encounter humble heroes, much like Joseph, who are willing to stand up for what is right. Just as Joseph remained faithful to Mary during what was an ambiguous moment in history, we too are called to be reliable disciples in these difficult times. A real Christmas occurs when we, like Joseph, stay on course even during uncertain times. All of you know that our parish is going through a time of transition and this period is still likely to last for some time. Nevertheless, like Joseph, we have a dream of how God is calling us to be church as we step into the future. From time to time, we might feel tempted to have doubts about this dream but, the more we ponder and pray together, the clearer this dream becomes. Just as Joseph refused to give up on Mary, we too are being asked not to give up on St. Ignatius. Even if we cease to be the exact kind of parish we were in the past, we have every reason to believe that Christ has a new mission for us in Rogers Park. More than ever, we are called to be light here and now. But living in this liminal situation - between the parish we were and the church that we are called to be – is not always easy. It must not have been easy for Joseph to face a future with many unanswered questions. But this is what it means to walk by faith, not solely by sight. Uncertainty can call forth new levels of generosity in us: generosity of spirit (we certainly need to trust and to confide in each other) but also monetary generosity (this is certainly not the time to grow slack in our stewardship towards the parish). We need considerable resources - both spiritual and material - if we hope to make our dream a reality. As did Joseph with Mary, let's do our best to step up to the plate during these times.

Cada año estamos invitados a ver la hermosa historia de la Navidad a través de la lente de un Evangelio en particular. Este año reflexionamos sobre la venida de Jesús como se narra en el evangelio de Mateo. En el Evangelio de hoy vemos a través de la perspectiva de José. Mary y Joseph se comprometieron a casarse pero, de repente, se descubrió que estaba embarazada. A YEAR IN REVIEW 2019 As the end of 2019 approaches, we look back on the year and reflect. We reflect on a year that has had its ups and downs. In March we welcomed Deacon Chris Murphy as our Pastoral Coordinator. He was tasked with righting our parish to help us discern what we wanted to be in the future. While the process is still continuing, we have managed to minister to the faithful of St. Ignatius. This year we saw over 70 of our students receive their First Communion, over 50 of our young people were signed by the Holy Spirit in the sacrament of Confirmation. Thirty-five of our parishioners participated in RCIA during Lent.

The parish was there for the families that lost a loved one. Each week the Rosary Group met in the chapel to pray for their families and ours, each First Friday we celebrated Adoration ending with the 3:00 pm Mass. The Circle of Prayer continues to meet and pray for all of us. We also celebrated several devotions important to our community: January 1st Our Lady of the Clouds, October 20th The Lord of the Miracles and just last week on December 12 Our Lady of Guadalupe. We celebrated as a community on the Feast of St. Ignatius with Mass and a party full of fun, food and fellowship.

We need you to be there for the parish. For each of these events the lights were turned on, the church was heated, in many instances the staff prepared the space or helped with the liturgy. The staff cleaned up after these varied events. Each Sunday worship aides are created. This week we will prepare a Christmas song book for the liturgies. All these events cost money. We need your support. This past week a neighbor walking by alerted a parishioner, who alerted a staff member about water running out one of the front doors of the school. The quick action of everyone involved kept the damage from creating major havoc. The source of the problem was the water main in the East School. We estimate the cost of repair to be over $6,000.

During the last few days of Advent, we ask you to prayerfully consider your Christmas contribution to the parish.

UN AÑO EN REVISIÓN 2019 A medida que se acerca el final de 2019, recordamos el año y reflexionamos. Reflexionamos sobre un año que ha tenido sus altibajos. En marzo dimos la bienvenida al Diácono Chris Murphy como nuestro Coordinador Pastoral. Se le encargó corregir nuestra parroquia para ayudarnos a discernir lo que queríamos ser en el futuro. Mientras el proceso aún continúa, hemos logrado ministrar a los fieles de San Ignacio. Este año vimos a más de 70 de nuestros estudiantes recibir su Primera Comunión, más de 50 de nuestros jóvenes fueron firmados por el Espíritu Santo en el sacramento de la Confirmación. Treinta y cinco de nuestros feligreses participaron en RICA durante la Cuaresma. La parroquia estaba allí para las familias.

También celebramos varias devociones importantes para nuestra comunidad: el 1 de enero, Nuestra Señora de las Nubes, el 20 de octubre, El Señor de los Milagros, y la semana pasada, el 12 de diciembre, Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe. Celebramos como comunidad la fiesta de San Ignacio con misa y una fiesta llena de diversión, comida y compañerismo.

Necesitamos que estés allí para la parroquia. Para cada uno de estos eventos, las luces se encendieron, la iglesia se calentó, en muchos casos el personal preparó el espacio o ayudó con la liturgia. El personal limpió después de estos variados eventos. Cada domingo se crean asistentes de adoración. Esta semana prepararemos un cancionero de Navidad para las liturgias. Todos estos eventos cuestan dinero. Necesitamos su apoyo. La semana pasada, un vecino que pasaba por allí alertó a un feligrés, que alertó a un miembro del personal sobre el agua que se escapaba por una de las puertas de entrada de la escuela. La acción rápida de todos los involucrados evitó que el daño creara grandes estragos. La fuente del problema fue la tubería de agua en la Escuela del Este. Estimamos que el costo de reparación sea superior a $ 6,000.

Durante los últimos días de Adviento, le pedimos que considere en oración su contribución de Navidad a la parroquia.

As we enter the last few days before Christmas, we are grateful to all the parishioner who have contributed to Ignatian Services this year. This year we were able to provide families with a wide variety of holiday items including turkeys, hams, chickens, fish, pork loins and breakfast sausage, fresh fruits and vegetables. Comfort foods like pancake mixes, syrup, hot chocolate and granola bars were also in our holiday assortment. So, whether you contributed your treasure to the St. Ignatius Food Pantry or the Hunger Walk you made a difference. If you volunteered your time with us for a day, a month or the whole year you made a difference. If you prayed for our families or our volunteers you made a difference. Together we are all vital links in the food chain helping the needy in our Rogers Park community. The pantry will be closed on Christmas Day and New Years so our volunteers can spend time with family and friends. As the new year begins, we renew our belief that WE ARE ALL IGNATIAN SERVICES.

On behalf of the people we serve we hope the coming year brings you and your loved ones many blessings.

St. Ignatius is a treasure member of the community and values its’ neighbors A neighbor, Amy Michel, walking her dog notices water rushing out of the east building of the school. She knows something is wrong and calls her friend, Cheryl Sporlein . She contacts a member of the staff. There is a problem in the school. The water is turned off. If not for the quick thinking of Amy and Cheryl, the water damage would have been disastrous. For over 110 years, St. Ignatius has been ministering to the Rogers Park though it is not a one-way street. The community has embraced the parish. The community supports the food pantry with volunteers and financial support. They have supported our fundraisers over the years – St. Pat’s Party, Golf Outing, Architectural Tours, The Messiah. This past week a flood was averted because a neighbor cared. We wish all our community partners a Merry Christmas and a Blessed New Year.

San Ignacio es un miembro del tesoro de la comunidad y valora a sus vecinos. Una vecina, Amy Michel, paseando a su perro, nota que el agua sale corriendo del edificio de la escuela.
