LIGHT OF THE WORLD Epiphany can be understood as an extension of the Nativity of the Lord that we celebrate on December 25. While at Christmas we celebrate Jesus’ coming as the long-awaited king and Messiah of the Jewish people, on Epiphany we celebrate the revelation that Jesus is the Savior and Light of all nations—Jews, Gentiles, and all people. The star shines so brightly that it attracts magi who come from far distant countries to worship Jesus. They are not Jews, yet they are drawn to the Light of the world. The letter to the Ephesians reveals that the Light of the world was for the Gentiles as well as the Jews—Christ gathers all people into the light of his love. The reading from Isaiah also describes a gathering of diverse peoples, but this time it is to the light that emanates from the people of God.

LUZ DEL MUNDO Se puede entender la Epifanía como una extensión de la Natividad del Señor que celebramos el 25 de diciembre. En la Navidad celebramos la venida de Jesús como el rey y Mesías tan esperado por el pueblo judío, y en la Epifanía celebramos la revelación de Jesús como el Salvador y la Luz de las naciones; es decir, de judíos, gentiles y de todos los pueblos. La estrella brilla con tanto fulgor que atrae a los magos que vienen de países distantes para adorar a Jesús. No son judíos, y sin embargo se ven atraídos al que es la Luz del Mundo. La carta a los efesios revela que la Luz del Mundo era tanto para gentiles como para judíos, pues Cristo reúne a todos los pueblos en la luz de su amor. La lectura de Isaías también describe a diversos pueblos que vienen, pero esta vez les atrae la luz que emana del pueblo de Dios.

SAINT ELIZABETH ANN SETON (1774-1821) January 4 Though her liturgical designation is “Religious,” Elizabeth Seton, her feast-day prayer reminds us, was also wife, mother, educator, foundress. Born into a wealthy Episcopalian family, Elizabeth married William Seton, whose untimely death in Italy where the young family sought healing for William’s tuberculosis, left her, at twenty-nine, a widow with five children. Inspired by the faith and charity of the Italian family with whom they stayed, Elizabeth embraced Catholicism despite her family’s disowning her and ceasing financial support. This woman of many firsts (and several vocations!) opened the first free Catholic school, beginning the American Catholic educational system, and founded the first American religious community for women, the Sisters of Charity. The tuberculosis that claimed her husband took also her oldest and youngest daughters and, finally, at just forty-seven, Elizabeth herself. Another first: in 1975 she was canonized the first native-born American saint. Once asked to summarize her spirituality, she replied: “Faith lifts the staggering soul on one side, hope supports it on the other, experience says it must be, and love says let it be!”

SANTA ELIZABETH SETON (1774-1821) 4 de enero Elizabeth nació en una familia anglicana donde aprendió a amar a Dios y a la Sagrada Escritura. Contrajo matrimonio a los 19 años con William Seton y ambos engendraron cinco hijos. Debido a la economía y la salud de su marido, emigró a Italia y posteriormente sufrió la muerte de su esposo. Gracias al testimonio y ayuda de una familia católica, expresó su deseo de hacerse católica y, finalmente, en 1805 profesó la plena comunión con la Iglesia. Como hija de catedrático llegó a ser una mujer de amplísima educación e ingenio y fundó una escuela para educar a los niños y mantener a su familia. Unos años después, junto con otras tres compañeras fundaron otra escuela en Baltimore, naciendo así la primera comunidad religiosa de mujeres fundada en los Estados Unidos: Hermanas de la Caridad de San José. Gracias a su visión y al carisma de sus hermanas, crearon las escuelas parroquiales en los Estados Unidos, influenciando el crecimiento del catolicismo y por supuesto, la educación católica. Fue la primera mujer estadounidense en ser canonizada.

Queridos Hermanos y Hermanas en Cristo: “Hemos visto su estrella en Oriente y hemos venido a adorar al Señor”. La luz que caracteriza la fiesta de la Epifanía, la de la estrella que guió a los magos hasta Belén, la que iluminó a los pastores, es la que ha manifestado a todos los seres del mundo que Dios se hace presente entre nosotros en Jesús de Nazaret. En la Carta a los Efesios, segunda lectura, también se habla de epifanía. Para llenarnos de alegría al conocer el plan misterioso de Dios. “Que también los gentiles son coherederos, miembros del mismo cuerpo y partícipes de la Promesa de Jesucristo, por el Evangelio”. Los magos del Evangelio somos todos los que buscamos la verdad y el amor, los que guiados por ese anhelo, como si fuera una estrella, encontraremos a Jesús y le podremos ofrecer lo mejor de nosotros mismos, porque reconocemos en El al mismo Dios hecho humano.

Con esa misma luz reconocemos el trabajo juvenil en nuestra parroquia. El viernes 20 de

Diciembre los líderes del grupo y el Diácono Rafael organizaron una noche navideña para la familia, vino otro diácono a predicar y un ministerio de música que acarició el oído y tanto la predicación como la Hora

Santa que dirigió el Diácono Rafael tocó el corazón y despertó ese deseo de vivir con mayor intensidad el regalo de tener una familia, donde el amor, el perdón y el encuentro son la oportunidad de cada día para tener a Jesús como huésped. Como siempre no está la cantidad de familias que esperamos y así aunque no de desperdician recursos, se extravía la posibilidad de que otras familias se beneficien. Dejamos en manos de Dios y de la conciencia de todos. Eventos así vale la pena aprovechar y enriquecernos de los valores del Reino de Dios. Sigamos orando para que este nuevo calendario estemos más atentos a las actividades parroquiales y hagamos la diferencia.

From the Desk of the Pastor... Del Escritorio Del Párroco... Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ: "We saw his star at its rising and have come to do him homage” The light that symbolizes the feast of the Epiphany - that of the star that led the magi to Bethlehem, the star that shone upon the shepherds - has manifested to all peoples of the world that God is present among us in Jesus of Nazareth. The Letter to the Ephesians, our second reading, also speaks of epiphany or revelation. This fills us with joy in knowing God's mysterious plan. "That the Gentiles are coheirs, members of the same body, and copartners in the promise in Jesus Christ through the Gospel." The magi of the Gospel are all of us who seek truth and love, who are guided by that yearning, as if it were a star. We will find Jesus and we then can offer him the best of ourselves, because we recognize in Him the same God made man. With that same light we recognize the work of the youth of our parish. December 20th the group leaders and Deacon Rafael organized a Christmas Family Night. Another deacon preached and presented wonderful music ministry. Both the preaching and the Holy Hour led by Deacon Rafael touched the heart and inspired a desire to live the gift of family with greater intensity where love, forgiveness and encounter offer the daily opportunity to have Jesus as a guest. As often happens, the number families attending were not as many that we had hoped for; however it was still worth it because families benefited from the experience. We leave this in the hands of God and the people’s conscience. Events like this are worth taking advantage of to enrich ourselves with the values of the Kingdom of God.
