PREPARING A WAY FOR THE LORD I can still remember how, when I first came of age, I told my mother that I’d be happy to take charge of Christmas decorations at our house. I would gladly get the tree, put up some Christmas lights, and place a wreath on the front door. I must confess: this generosity on my part was not pure altruism (I figured that the sooner the house was decorated, the sooner some gifts might appear under the tree!) However, with her typical wisdom, my mother said that, before engaging in any decorating, we should devote time to cleaning the house - floors, rugs, windows, blinds – everything had to be sparkling clean before we could entertain the thought of putting up decorations. Although I tried to convince my mother that such radical maintenance was not an absolute requirement for doing Christmas decorations, I never managed to win her over to my theory. She rightly and wisely understood the need to clean one’s house first, before anything else.

As we begin the Second Week of Advent, we encounter John the Baptist who invites us to “prepare the way of the Lord”. As I listen to his message, my mother’s words about the importance of preparation come to mind. Of course, John the Baptist was not talking about house-cleaning; nevertheless, he perceived the need to make the necessary interior changes if we ever hope to celebrate the presence of Christ incarnate in our midst. While Advent is not a penitential season, it does elicit a greater degree of spiritual attunement on each of our parts so that our Christmas celebration may have real depth and spiritual content (and not devolve into one more holiday on the civic calendar). Perhaps along with John the Baptist, we can benefit from some “desert time”, that is, from time for prayerful silence where we take a long, loving look at our lives from God’s perspective.

As you know, for the past couple of months, together we have been trying to discern the ways in which God could be calling us to be church here in Rogers Park. Once again, we want to thank all of you who participated in this process. Now, the next step is for us to share our reflections with the good people at Loyola University Chicago in order to see in what ways we might partner together so as to make our vision a reality. Now that we, as a parish, have taken a long, loving look at our parish life, we seek other partners who would like to make this dream a reality so that, together, we build the Body of Christ. Realistically, this new stage will involve more than one conversation but we promise to provide you with regular “progress reports” along the way. In the meantime, and in the spirit of Advent, let us ask for the grace to wait both prayerfully and hopefully.

PREPARANDO UN CAMINO PARA EL SEÑOR Todavía puedo recordar cómo, cuando llegué a la mayoría de edad, le dije a mi madre que estaría feliz de encargarme de las decoraciones navideñas en nuestra casa. Con gusto conseguiría el árbol, pondría algunas luces navideñas y colocaría una corona de flores en la puerta principal. Debo confesar: esta generosidad de mi parte no fue puro altruismo (¡pensé que cuanto antes se decorara la casa, antes aparecerían algunos regalos debajo del árbol!) Sin embargo, con su sabiduría típica, mi madre me recordaba que, antes de realizar cualquier tipo de decoración, debemos dedicar algo de tiempo a limpiar la propia casa (pisos, alfombras, ventanas, persianas), todo debe estar impecablemente limpio antes de que podamos entretener la idea de colocar decoraciones. Aunque traté de convencer a mi madre de que un mantenimiento tan radical no era un requisito absoluto para hacer decoraciones navideñas, nunca logré convencerla de mi teoría. Ella entendió - correcta y sabiamente - la necesidad de limpiar la casa primero, antes que nada.

Al comenzar la Segunda Semana de Adviento, nos encontramos con Juan el Bautista que nos invita a "preparar el camino del Señor". Mientras escucho sus palabras, me vienen a la mente las palabras de mi madre sobre la importancia de la preparación. Por supuesto, Juan el Bautista no estaba hablando de la limpieza de la casa; sin embargo, percibió la necesidad de hacer los cambios interiores necesarios si alguna vez esperamos reconocer la presencia de Cristo encarnado en nuestro medio. Si bien el Adviento no es una temporada penitencial, sí provoca un mayor grado de sintonización espiritual por parte de nosotros a fin de que nuestra celebración de Navidad tenga una profundidad real y un contenido espiritual (y no se convierta en una festividad más en el calendario cívico). Quizás junto con Juan el Bautista, podamos beneficiarnos de un "tiempo en el desierto", es decir, un tiempo de silencio en oración donde miramos nuestras vidas desde la perspectiva de Dios.

Como saben, durante los últimos meses, juntos hemos estado tratando de discernir las formas en que Dios podría estar llamándonos a ser iglesia aquí en Rogers Park. Una vez más, queremos agradecerles a todos los que participaron en este proceso. Ahora, el siguiente paso es que compartamos nuestras reflexiones con las buenas personas de la Universidad Loyola de Chicago para ver de qué manera podríamos asociarnos para hacer realidad nuestra visión. Ahora que nosotros, como parroquia, hemos echado un vistazo largo y amoroso a nuestra vida parroquial, buscamos otros socios que deseen hacer realidad este sueño para que, juntos, construyamos el Cuerpo de Cristo. Siendo realistas, esta nueva etapa implicará más de una conversación, pero nos comprometemos a proporcionarles regularmente "informes de progreso". Mientras tanto, y en el espíritu de Adviento, pidamos la gracia de esperar con oración y esperanza.

THE ROSARY: It is the Marian devotion that has enjoyed more preferences in popular piety and has been more recommended by the Church. It consists of meditating twenty episodes or mysteries of the life, passion and death of Christ (including the Luminous Mysteries suggested by Pope John Paul II.) Related to Saint Mary, interspersing in each mystery an Our Father and ten Birds of Mary. The rosary, in addition to cultivating, guiding and nurturing our faith in Christ, helps us to deepen the importance of the Guadalupe event and allows us to feel the loving presence of Our Mother for her Mexican people. “The Rosary transports us mystically with Mary, dedicated to following the human growth of Christ in the house of Nazareth. That allows him to educate and model us with the same diligence, until Christ “is fully formed” in us.

EL ROSARIO: Es la devoción mariana que ha gozado de más preferencias en la piedad popular y ha sido más recomendada por la Iglesia. Consiste en meditar veinte episodios o misterios de la vida, pasión y muerte de Cristo (incluyendo los Misterios Luminosos sugeridos por el Papa Juan Pablo II.) relacionados con Santa María, intercalando en cada misterio un Padre Nuestro y diez Aves Marías. El rosario, además de cultivar, orientar y alimentar nuestra fe en Cristo nos ayuda a profundizar la trascendencia del hecho guadalupano y nos permite sentir la presencia amorosa de Nuestra Madre para su pueblo mexicano. “El Rosario nos transporta místicamente junto a María, dedicada a seguir el crecimiento humano de Cristo en la casa de Nazaret. Eso le permite educarnos y modelarnos con la misma diligencia, hasta que Cristo “sea formado” plenamente en nosotros

Esta semana, Caridades Católicas recogió más de 100 regalos donados por nuestros generosos feligreses. Estos obsequios se distribuirán a los niños cuyas familias forman parte de la red de ayuda de Caridades Católicas. Los regalos iban desde un suave y adorable Mickey Mouse hasta numerosos personajes de Frozen 2. También había algunos artículos más tradicionales como libros, scooters, camiones y juguetes musicales. ¡Los adolescentes no se olvidaron de muchas tarjetas de regalo recibidas para gastar como quieran! ¡Alguna forma del Árbol de la Donación ha existido durante cuarenta años! Gracias por su generoso apoyo a este ministerio.

DÍA DE ACCIÓN DE GRACIAS ALMUERZO UN ÉXITO Gracias a todos los que ayudaron con el almuerzo anual de Acción de Gracias. La noche anterior, varias familias se unieron a nosotros para decorar la Sala del Santo Nombre para que parezca un país de las maravillas del otoño. Había pavos, cornucopias, calabazas y cuervos para ayudar a crear el ambiente. Después de la misa de acción de gracias, el p. Hartnett nos guió en oración mientras damos gracias por todo lo que se nos ha dado. ¡Nuestros invitados fueron saludados por una gran cantidad de voluntarios, algunos voluntarios por primera vez y otros voluntarios por 35ª vez! El menú incluía el tradicional pavo, relleno, judías verdes, arándanos, puré de papas y salsa de arándanos, seguido de una selección de pastel de manzana o calabaza. Enviamos a nuestros invitados a casa con las sobras junto con una bolsa de fruta fresca. Nuestros invitados agradecieron a quienes sirvieron, prepararon y contribuyeron al éxito de la cena. ¡Todos lo pasamos bien!

This week Catholic Charities picked up over 100 gifts donated by our generous parishioners. These gifts will be distributed to the children whose families are part of the Catholic Charities network of help. The gifts ranged from a soft cuddly Mickey Mouse to numerous characters from Frozen 2. There were also some more traditional items like books, scooters, trucks and musical toys. The teens were not forgotten many received gift cards to spend as they like! Some form of the Giving Tree has been around for forty years! Thank you for your generous support of this ministry.

THANKSGIVING DAY LUNCHEON A SUCCESS Thank you to all who helped with the annual Thanksgiving luncheon. The night before several families joined us to decorate the Holy Name Room to look like a fall wonderland. There were turkeys, cornucopias, pumpkins and scare crows to help set the mood. After the Thanksgiving Mass, Fr. Hartnett lead us in prayer as we gave thanks for all that has been given to us. Our guests were greeting by a host of volunteers some volunteering for their first-time others volunteering for their 35th time! The menu included the traditional turkey, stuffing, green beans, cranberries, mashed potatoes and cranberry sauce followed by a choice of apple or pumpkin pie. We sent our guests home with leftovers along with a bag of fresh fruit. Our guests were grateful for those who served, set-up and contributed to the success of the dinner. A good time was had by all!

This week we celebrate two feast days that honor the Blessed Mother. Traditionally, celebrated on December 8th, this year we celebrate the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception, the solemn dogma defined by Blessed Pope Pius IX in 1854 on Monday. It was transferred from the 8th to the 9th because of the Sunday Liturgy. Through the centuries the Church has become ever more aware that Mary, “full of grace” through God, was redeemed from the moment of her conception. “The most Blessed Virgin Mary, was, from the first moment of her conception, by a singular grace and privilege of almighty God and by virtue of the merits of Jesus Christ, Savior of the human race, preserved immune from all stain of original sin.” Catechism of the Catholic Church. On Monday, we will have mass at 8:00 am and at 7:00 pm bi-lingual.

The second feast we celebrate is the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe when Our Lady appeared to Juan Diego for 3 days from December 9 through December 12th. A Rose Rosary will be said each evening at 6:30 followed by a bilingual Mass at 7:00. On Wednesday there will also be Rosary of the Roses at 9, 10 and 11pm serenaded with by a Mariachi band. The Thursday, December 12th liturgy will also include Aztec dancers and a reenactment of the story accompanied by Mariachi. A social will follow all the masses. Please join the Guadalupano as they celebrate their heritage. Honor Mary by attending one of the many liturgies in her honor this week.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION There will be Parent meetings and classes for all students on both Saturday, December 7th and 14th from 10 until noon. December 21st will be a class day for all students. There will be no classes on December 28th and January 4th. Classes will resume on January 11, 2020.

On Saturday, December 14th, some of the young Jesuits from Loyola will be putting on a Lessons and Carols Service at St. Nicholas Church in Evanston. This night of prayer and song is a great way to enter into the spirit of Advent and the Christmas season. It will feature classic and contemporary Christmas music, biblical readings, and preaching. The evening will begin at 7:00 PM and admission is free.
