The readings today are unequivocal in direction, which is that goodness comes from God, evil from within our hearts. The problem with the Pharisees was not so much their adherence to rituals, but their misuse of rituals as a kind of gateway to heaven. Washing one’s hands before meals does not cleanse the spirit, only the waters of Baptism can do that. For six weeks we heard of Jesus as the new bread from heaven, the Bread of Life.
Now He becomes the new Moses, whose commandments may be “hard to accept.” This Bread of Life becomes a Way of Life, and indeed, to life everlasting with God. Yet we can’t be too harsh on the Pharisees, because how easy is it for us to do the same, to check the box? Mass – done. Volunteering – done. Helping a child with homework –done. The “I better go to Confession today before my big test, interview, match, etc.” It’s easy to use our faith like a talisman, a good luck charm. But God is not some being meant to be flattered or whose affection is bought with superstition. “All good giving and every perfect gift is from above.” God gives His love freely, just as Jesus gave Himself. The humblest prayer whispered in the dark can resound louder than all the supplications heard from the grandest pulpit. God desires nothing more than what our patron Saint exclaims – that we “welcome the word that has been planted;” that we do more than just hear the good, but that we DO the good. Tomorrow we celebrate Labor Day, but for many, it will not be a day of picnics and pools. For some, it will be another day of labor, of striving to earn a living for themselves and their families. So too, for some, it will be a reminder of their frustrations with their efforts to find employment. To all, I pray that we recognize the dignity and rights of every worker’s vocation. And to all who labor in the Lord’s vineyard as clergy, religious and laity, thank you for commitment and sacrifice. Most importantly, to my sisters and brothers of our parish, thank you for your continued witness, especially during these difficult and disturbing days in the Church. Thank you for coming here every week, or even every day, supporting each other, praying for one another and reminding me of the true power of faith, a light against the darkness. May God bless you.
~Fr. Posey

Food Distribution Needs Your Help – Food Request We had a record summer attendance at our August 3rd Food Distribution. Our cupboards and bins are bare and food is desperately needed. If you are able, please donate any of the following items: canned protein (chicken, Vienna sausages, tuna, etc.), peanut butter, jelly, pasta, pasta sauce, bags of rice, bags of beans, hearty soups. Cans, plastic containers, bags and boxes are preferred. Glass makes our bags heavier. Items may be left in the back of the church and will be delivered by our
wonderful volunteers to the Heller Hall kitchen. We sincerely appreciate your help.

Know The Patron Saints: Father Maximilian Kolbe Father Maximilian Kolbe (January 8, 1894—August 14, 1941) (Canonized October 10, 1982) was a Polish Conventual Franciscan who led efforts to promote the veneration of Mary throughout Poland. He also founded a monastery in Niepokalanów, Poland. After being arrested by the
Nazis in 1941, Kolbe was transferred to their extermination camp at Auschwitz. At the end of July 1941, Kolbe volunteered to take the place of another prisoner who was selected to be executed by forced starvation. At the end of two weeks, Nazi guards executed Kolbe with an injection of carbolic acid to his heart. Kolbe is the patron saint of families, journalists, prisoners, and the pro-life movement.
