September, 2016

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

Where did the summer months go? It’s almost as if we are in fast

forward mode and time is zooming by so quickly! Indeed, Autumn

is just around the corner and with that comes not only beautiful fall

colors and cooler temperatures that walk hand in hand with the

season of back to school and Sunday school. This month begins the

season when St. James will offer many and various opportunities

for us to learn through Sunday school, confirmation, and Bible

study classes to discover our Lord and Savior, Jesus and His love

for us, as well as learn how to be faithful Christians inspired by the

Word of God!

I’m reminded of the excitement that was shared by the VBS

children and volunteers this past July. It was such an exciting week

here at church. To see the wonder, the enthusiasm, and the fun of

all who participated in “Cave Quest.” How refreshing it was (and

is!) to learn from and with others and to share in the excitement of

what it means to be a child of God following the light of the world!

To be so happy to enter a church, to share in God’s Word, to be in

a community where ideas are shared and faith stories are lived

out…and to do so in such a manner that enlightened and lifted up

one another’s spirits….the enthusiasm was practically infectious!

As I looked upon all of the activities that were going on throughout

the VBS process, seeing the planning stages come to fruition, the

volunteers show up in droves to help, the VBS week going full

speed ahead, I couldn’t help but think about all of the people who

have crossed the threshold of this church throughout its history.

How many people have had their lives of faith shaped by the

educational opportunities offered here at St. James, not to mention

the worship experiences and opportunities? I tried to imagine how

Page 2: St. James Lutheran Church...St. James Lutheran Church 9:00 A.M. Worship Service – 10:30 A.M. Sunday School The Rev. Darcy M. Reis, Pastor ===== September, 2016 Dear Sisters and Brothers

many people whose lives have been affected and enriched by those

who live their lives of faith by serving others over the years. I

thought of the friendships and familial relationships that have

formed and been strengthened by faithful followers of

Christ…those special beloved children of God…who surround us

no matter what their age.

Indeed, how refreshing it is to be a part of St. James Church,

joining together with you, each a special child of God, surrounded

by so many people of great faith and who are excited, happy, and

enthusiastic to enter the doors of our church as we worship our

Lord and live out our lives of faith, serving others!

It’s going to be a fun Autumn filled with lots of learning, praying,

listening, and worshipping our Lord. I give thanks and joy for the

ministry we share together.

“Then our mouth was filled with laughter, and our tongue with

shouts of joy; then it was said among the nations, The Lord has

done great things for them. The Lord has done great things for us,

and we rejoiced.” Psalm 126:2-3

In Christ’s love,

Pr. D.

NOTES received – NOTES expressed:

Pastor Reis’ e-mail to Bishop Dunlop

Dear Bishop Dunlop, On behalf of myself and the congregation here at St. James in West York, we send you greetings in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior.

Because I was in residence at the assembly and didn't have any crazy socks to wear on the challenge day, I thought it would be fun to challenge St. James congregation to wear silly socks on Sunday, June 19th as a way of "socking it to hunger" from afar...so to speak.

During announcements the following Sunday after assembly, I explained the challenge you offered assembly participants and I offered to donate two dollars per person who wore crazy socks and was willing to have their picture taken to be sent to you. The response was overwhelming this past Sunday and I am happy to say that we had 26 participants in socks including myself. One was a young elementary age girl who was upset that she couldn't be in church the day of the challenge so her mom took a picture of her in the socks and emailed it to me!

Another member took it upon themselves to purchase extra crazy socks to share so that more members could participate. During Communion, as the members approached me for the bread, I noticed that several crazy sock participants had come forward without shoes on so as to subtly show me their socks!

Yet another member donning Halloween socks suggested during announcements that those who forgot to wear socks and wanted to participate could make a donation toward the cause. In the greeting line following the worship service I had been handed a total of $26.00 from members who wished to donate!

In all, a check to the synod will be arriving soon from St. James West York in the amount of $80.00, 26 people at $2.00 a person + $26.00 donated cash with $2.00 added in for your crazy socks, too.

Thank you for the inspiration and for allowing us to share in the giving experience. We had a lot of fun participating together!

In Christ, Pastor Darcy Reis

THANK YOU NOTES continued:

Bishop’s response: Lower Susquehanna Synod, ELCA “Where the hungry are fed.”

Pastor Reis, Thanks you so much for this email. It just brought

such joy to me that your congregation was willing to have fun and

help feed the hungry. What a wonderful blessing to return form

vacation and find your email. Please thank everyone in the

congregation for their great spirit and generosity.

Peace, James S. Dunlop

Dear St. James Lutheran, On behalf of the Harvest of Hope Food

Pantry, we thank you so much for the donation of 97 lbs. of canned

goods and soups collected during the 2016 VBS week. Your

generosity is appreciated.

May God Bless You, Barbara Kephart, Corr. Secretary

St. James members, I want to thank you for your prayers during

my eye cornea implant surgery. Also, thank you for the beautiful
