ST. JAMES THE APOSTLE CATHOLIC CHURCH MISSION STATEMENT

Rooted in the Catholic Faith, in order to build up the reign of God, the mission of St. James the Apostle Catholic Church is to live out the message of Jesus Christ by worshipping God by serving the world.

Reminder: If you would like to use your debit/credit card for your weekly offering, please stop by the church office. You can also set up automatic deposits from your bank to the church. Thank you for your contributions.

THE STORY OF OUR REDEMPTION

We begin the final week of Lent with these famil-iar readings. This year, we hear the Passion from the Gospel of Luke. These readings for Palm Sunday and the Passion used to be read on successive Sundays. Now they are combined into a single feast, so that we may see the whole sweep of the glory and the suffer-ing played out. Jesus accepts the adulation of the crowd, the foreshadowing of his glory in the Resur-rection. He bids farewell to his disciples in his last Passover, and forgives his tormentors as he dies on the cross. Later this week, we enter the Holy Triduum of Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and Holy Saturday, when the whole story of our redemption will play out once again. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Lenten Regulations

NORMS FOR FASTING AND ABSTAINING FROM MEAT Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are obligatory days of fasting and abstinence for Catholics. In addition, Fridays during Lent are obliga-tory days of abstinence.

For members of the Roman Catholic Church, the norms on fasting are obligatory from age 18 until age 59. When fasting, a person is permitted to eat one full meal, as well as two smaller meals that together are not equal to a full meal. The norms concerning absti-nence from meat are binding upon members of the Roman Catholic Church from age 14 onwards.

Those that are excused from fast and abstinence outside the age limits include the physically or mentally ill including individuals suf-fering from chronic illnesses such as diabetes. Also excluded are pregnant or nursing women. In all cases, common sense should prevail, and ill persons should not further jeopardize their health by fasting.

Confessions During Lent at St. James from 9:30 am until 10:30 am Fr. Lijo/Fr. Jim are available on Sunday mornings between Masses for confessions. Please check in with the office.

Victim Advocacy Number If you believe you are a victim of sexual and/or physically abused, please call our 24hr-hotline at 702-235-7723.

It's Child Abuse Awareness Month

A PRAYER FOR HEALING

VICTIMS OF ABUSE God of endless love,

ever caring, ever strong, always present, always just:

You gave your only Son to save us by his blood on the cross.

Gentle Jesus, shepherd of peace, join to your own suffering

the pain of all who have been hurt in body, mind, and spirit

by those who betrayed the trust placed in them. Hear the cries of our brothers and sisters

who have been gravely harmed, and the cries of those who love them. Soothe their restless hearts with hope, steady their shaken spirits with faith.

Grant them jus ce for their cause, enlightened by your truth.

Holy Spirit, comforter of hearts, heal your people’s wounds

and transform brokenness into wholeness. Grant us the courage and wisdom,

humility and grace, to act with jus ce. Breathe wisdom into our prayers and labors.

Grant that all harmed by abuse may find peace in justice. We ask this through Christ, our Lord. Amen.

Dear Parishioners and Friends of St. James the Apostle, WE ENTER THIS HOLIEST OF WEEKS With this Palm Sunday of the Lord’s Passion, we enter into the most solemn week of the entire liturgical year! There’s something special in the heart of anyone who makes a sincere effort to try to be present for the Sacred Triduum, or as much of it as possible. The “three days” of Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday are considered not 3 separate liturgies, but one solemn liturgy spread over 3 days. Please see the insert in today’s bulletin which gives a simple explanation of how we spend these holy days journeying with Christ through his suf-fering, death and resurrection.

From the time I became an altar server in the 3rd grade, I remember being so excited to participate in the special Masses and services of the Sacred Triduum (pronounced: TRID-oo-um). So, for the past 49 years of my life I have been able to participate in these special days. Fast forward to 20 years ago when I was ordained a priest, and the Sacred Triduum took on a whole different meaning. The next best thing will be enjoying the eternal life Christ won for ALL of us when he calls us home.

So, I invite you all to take some time this week to remember the Holy Weeks of your past. What made them so special? How have they changed from place to place or from time to time? Which was your favorite day and/or service of the Sacred Triduum?

If there are no memories from the past because there was not a desire or maybe no opportunity to participate in the Sacred Triduum, why not make this year the beginning of some new memories? These upcom-ing days give each of us an opportunity to journey so intimately with the Christ who suffered and died for us to save us and bring us home. He did it all for us! What are we going to do this coming week for him?

Peace always, Fr. James Michael Jankowski Pastor

Eighth Annual St. James Easter Clothing Drive

The Outreach Committee would like to ask your help with our Easter Outreach Program. For the next several weeks we will be holding our Eighth Annual St. James East-er Clothing Drive for Child Haven of Southern Nevada. When children are removed from their homes and placed into protective custody, they have few, if any, of their per-sonal belongings. Child Haven provides a duffel bag filled with new clothing, toys and other items to children when they leave Child Haven to live with relatives or in a foster home. Child Haven does not receive funding to purchase the duffel bags and their contents. They rely on the generosity of the community to help supply these basic necessities. New and gently used items are needed to ensure that they are able to continue to assist families and children in need. As part of our clothing drive for the children at Child Haven, we are asking for new under garments for boys and girls, ages 0 months to 17 years. Please help us by donating new socks, t-shirts and underwear in all sizes. Toiletries are also accepted; tooth brushes, toothpaste, shampoo, etc. We will have boxes in the lobby for your clothing donations or take your cash donations to purchase these items. Our goal is to collect and deliver our donation to Child Haven on Monday, April 29, 2019. If there are any questions, please contact Angie Bigas or the church office. Thank you for your continued support.
