Youth Conference update The Steubenville Youth Conference and 18:23 Young Adult Con-

ference in San Diego is nearly here and will begin in a short 2 weeks. Please keep our 75 youth and 9 chaperones along with 18 young adults in prayer that the Holy Spirit be their guiding force now and during the July 24-27 conference.

Our thanks to the parishioners who supported our E-waste fund-

raiser which ended early June. We raised $224.71 to pay a portion of our transportation to and from our upcoming conference. We made an additional $17.45 with our cell phone collections. St. Justin Martyr Church July 13, 2014 Today’s Scripture

First Reading -- My word will achieve the end for which it was sent (Isaiah 55:10-11).

Psalm -- The seed that falls on good ground will yield a fruitful harvest (Psalm 65).

Second Reading -- We, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan within ourselves awaiting the redemption of our bodies (Romans 8:18-23).

Gospel -- Some seed fell on rich soil and produced fruit (Matthew 13:1-23 [1-9]).

Giving of Oneself Scientists have recently begun to discuss the idea that the

primary force behind all life in the universe is self-gift. This is how everything from galaxies to human babies are born and sustained.

If we read the opening of today's passage from Isaiah cor-rectly, we see that he anticipated twentieth-century scientists by over twenty five hundred years. Using the self-giving example of the rain and snow clouds that water the earth that then yields fruit, which in turn is given over to nourish creatures, Isaiah leads us to understand that the primary force behind all life is the word of God. The ultimate giving of that word, we believe, was Jesus Christ, who, in the greatest revelation of divine love, gave of himself on the cross.

To what degree are we in touch with that self-giving God in whose image we are made? To what extent do we really follow the self-giving example of Christ into whose death and resurrec-tion we were baptized, whose ultimate self-gift we celebrate every week in the Eucharist? With God's help, our lives can be like Isaiah's rain and snow, and we will not return to heaven until we have done our part to make the earth fruitful. Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co.

Treasures from our Tradition With the Reformation, some early Protestants, including the

"Anabaptists," rejected infant baptism in favor of "believer's baptism." Against Orthodox and Catholic practice, which fa-vored baptism as soon as possible for a newborn, these move-ments desired that the candidate for baptism speak for him- or herself at a mature age, not through godparents as an infant. Today, it is clear that they were rejecting a very ancient practice (even as early as the second century) of baptizing children of all ages. Children came first in ancient baptismal ceremonies, and someone would speak for them. Gregory of Nazianzen wanted to delay the baptism of children to three years of age, since at that age they could retain at least some impression of the liturgy. He made an exception for the very ill, who were to be baptized ahead of the annual Easter baptism. That means that infants and children were normally baptized together with adults, and that everyone received confirmation and the Eucharist.

The tone of the early bishops' writings is generous and com-passionate, and seeks to build up the eucharistic assembly by widely celebrating the gift of the Holy Spirit. If a priest cele-brated baptism, then the gift of the Spirit was postponed for the bishop, but with no regard for the person's age. Peace and Justice corner Compassion is a beautiful word. It refers to the ability to

share the sufferings of others, to make them our own, to alle-viate them where possible and to show sympathy where nec-essary. In the biblical tradition, compassion is not just an emotion. Rather, compassion is rooted in the recognition that God's people constitute a community of sufferers and that even in the midst of intense suffering God is present as our help. SRE Registration, Grades K-8 The School of Religious Education is having regis-

tration for classes beginning in September 2014 for all students in Kindergarten through 8th grade. Students must re-register for the 2014-15 year. Forms are avail-able in the Religious Education Office. After June 30th registration is on a space available basis only.

The registration fee is applicable each year. Reg-istration fees are: $80.00 for 1 student, $125.00 for 2 students, and $150.00 for 3 or more students. No one is turned away who is unable to pay, however if this is the situation please contact the Director of Religious Educa-tion.

Atten-dance at the meeting does not imply a decision to partici-pate in the process; rather it is an opportunity for eligible students to get information needed to help make that deci-sion. Summer Bible School St. Justin Parish held its annual Summer Bible School pro-

gram from June 23-27. Teachers and teachers’ aides volunteered to help children in grades 1-6 get familiar with some of the sto-ries in the Bible, to sing, make crafts, pray and play.

Guitars accompanied the action songs in the colorfully decorated room.

Fr. Bill passed out holy cards after their closing Mass.

All of the students, teachers, and teachers’ aides together with Fr. Bill are shown after the clos-ing Mass for the Summer Bible School.

The children gave Fr. Bill a thank you card and wished him well as he was preparing for his new assignment at St. Anthony Claret Church.

REFLEXIONES SOBRE LA PALABRA El sueño de Dios para nosotros

Isaías 55:10-11 A los israelitas se les habían acabado los símbolos que les daban identidad y fundamentaban su fe—la tierra, el rey y el templo—. Su fe ahora solo tenía la palabra de Dios y sus promesas. Este tema está presente en esta sección. La palabra de Dios permanece para siempre y sus promesas nunca dejan de cumplirse. Romanos 8:18-23 Pablo se refiere aquí a los predestinados. No es un pre designio para el mal, sino de “quienes han sido llama-dos según el designio de Dios”. El designio consiste en que Dios ha querido que todo nos venga por Cristo, el primero entre muchos hermanos y el que nos hace hijos de Dios. Mateo 13:1-23 Los discípulos preguntan por el estilo de enseñanza de Jesús. La respuesta de Jesús se refiere al privilegio de los discípulos que no tiene todo el mundo, pero luego la respuesta se amplia. Las parábolas no son misterios ni adivinanzas. No hay en ellas nada incomprensible, sino que se refieren a la vida diaria. Solo quien se cierra no puede entender. La explicación de la enseñanza en parábolas adquiere su pleno sentido en el contexto del Evangelio. Para Mateo era un problema la incredulidad del pueblo elegido. En el momento en que escribe Ma-teo se estaba verificando la ruptura entre la iglesia y el rabinismo fariseo. Nuestra cultura El pueblo hispano es tradicionalmente muy religioso y devoto; sin embargo, en medio de las ocupaciones de esta sociedad y el deseo de una vida mejor, los inmi-grantes podrían ceder a muchas distracciones externas. Es importante que la comunidad de fe proporcione apo-yo y siga dando sentido a sus esfuerzos.

tando a todos ustedes a que se unan a mí en la Misa para Inmigrantes la cual se llevará a cabo en la Catedral de Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles en Los Ángeles, el Domingo 20 de Julio, 2014 a las 3:00 PM.

Les invito a todos, a que se unan al Arzobispo Gómez y a mí y a otros Obispos en Los Ángeles el Domingo 20 de Julio para dar testimonio de nues-tras historias de Inmigración y orar por la lucha de los inmigrantes, la cual el Arzobispo Gómez llama “uno de los grandes temas de los derechos humanos de nuestros tiempos” y el Cardenal O’Malley nos recuerda que es, en efecto un interés “pro-vida.” ¡Yo mismo he visto personalmente, cómo la preocupación por la vida de los aún no nacidos y de nuestras familias inmigrantes con fre-cuencia se encuentran juntos en los mismos individuos! El Papa Benedicto XVI en Washington DC, y más recientemente el Papa Francisco, han hablado también acerca de la importancia de los derechos humanos y del cuidado por los personas inmigrantes.

Que Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe, patrona de las Américas y Estrella de la Nueva Evangelización, nos una y atraiga a todos los pueblos a su hijo Jesús.

Gracias por su testimonio de Fe y por todo lo que hacen por tantas perso-nas, cuyas vidas se cruzan con las nuestras en el Cuerpo de Cristo.

Reflexiones para la homilía A nuestros niños les contamos cuentos antes de dormir. Los

cuentos no son simplemente historias para entretener, sino que siempre enseñan algo, algún valor que tenemos cerca y que es prio-ridad para nosotros, como decir la verdad, honrar y obedecer a los mayores, ayudar a otros, tener ingenio para solucionar problemas y manejar las situaciones de la vida…. A través de los cuentos, damos consejos a los niños sobre como planificar bien, tener prudencia y vencer el miedo.

Los cuentos tienen que tener un efecto en los niños, aunque a veces no pensemos en esa intención. Además de entretener, van formando. Tal es la fuerza de la palabra de personas en las que los niños confían. Lo mismo nos ocurre a nosotros—solo que, lógica-mente, con mucha más fuerza—con la Palabra de Dios. La Palabra de Dios no es solo un conjunto de bellos pensamientos. Tiene que bajar a la tierra y no regresa a Dios hasta que cumple su objetivo; y su objetivo es hacernos todo lo que Dios quiere de nosotros. Dios tiene un plan para nosotros, como nosotros, desde nuestra propia limitación, tenemos unos sueños para nuestros hijos; pero los sue-ños de Dios para nosotros son mucho más reales, porque Dios si ve el futuro. Solo nos toca colaborar.

La Palabra de Dios—que es su propio Hijo, Jesús—viene a este mundo para que se cumpla el sueño de Dios para nosotros. Y el sueño de Dios es, ni más ni menos que seamos todo lo que podemos y debemos ser. El sueño de Dios es que nuestras relaciones sean sanas, nuestra vida sea de servicio, nuestro mundo sea justo y este en paz; y para eso, que nuestras familias estén enteras. Que se res-pete la dignidad de todos como hijos.

El sueño de Dios para nosotros es que las distracciones, las dificultades, las cosas de este mundo que podrían ahogar nuestras semillas no nos ocupen tanto la mente y el corazón que no podamos escuchar su Palabra. El sueño de Dios para nosotros es que, escu-chando atentamente a Jesús—en sus parábolas, sus milagros y parti-cularmente en sus asombrosos actos de amor como son la Eucaristía y su Pasión y resurrección—lleguemos a la salvación y a ser discí-pulos que salen en misión.

Los que nos cuente Jesús en parábolas, discursos, milagros, no es simplemente un entretenimiento; no es un cuento para dormirnos o apaciguarnos; es un mensaje que nos sacude, nos desafía, nos pone en camino de misión, porque su Palabra no puede regresar a Dios de vacío, sino que tiene que hacer aquello para lo que fue en-viada.

La Palabra enviada de Dios fue Jesús, en su primera y gran migración, del seno del Padre celestial a nuestra tierra y nuestra humanidad. Esa Palabra es nuestra salvación; pero, para que dé fruto, tenemos que aceptarla y hacerla florecer. No podemos dejar que la semilla se ahogue dentro de nosotros y tenemos que dar fruto siguiendo a Jesús como misioneros, evangelizadores, testigos de esa gran noticia. Somos así, predestinados, hermanos de Cristo, hijos en el Único Hijo de Dios, su Palabra.

Para la reflexión

¿Cuál pienso que es el sueño de Dios para mí? ¿Cómo puedo realizarlo? ¿A que me llama el aceptar la Palabra y salvación de Dios en mi vida? ¿Cuáles son los mayores desafíos? ¿Qué es lo que me distrae y me preocupa y a veces amenaza con ahogar la semilla de la Palabra en mi?

Confirmación 1 (Primera Comunión) Orientaciones Todos los estudiantes que entraran al grado 9 al 11 en

septiembre de 2014 y que han sido bautizados y han recibi-do o necesitan su Primera Comunión son elegibles para comenzar un proceso de preparación de 2 años para la Con-firmación/Primera Comunión. Habrá una serie de reuniones para los estudiantes y sus padres en las siguientes fechas y horarios programados.

Durante esta tarde, usted recibirá más información so-bre nuestro proceso de preparación para la Confirmación de San Justino. La asistencia a una reunión no implica una decisión de participar en el proceso de confirmación, sino que es una oportunidad para los estudiantes elegibles para obtener la información necesaria para ayudarle a tomar esa decisión. Los formularios de inscripción estarán disponibles para aquellos que deciden comenzar a prepararse para la Confirmación en el otoño de 2014. Es necesario que el estudiante y los padres asistan a una de estas reuniones. Asistir a una de estas reuniones es un requisito para todos los interesados en la preparación para la Confir-mación. Iniciativa para combatir el tráfico humano Recientemente vi en un tren un anuncio de servicio público

sobre el tráfico humano en Estados Unidos: muchas personas, y entre ellas mujeres y niños, que han sido forzados o engañados y arrastrados a la prostitución, trabajos forzados, esclavizados por deudas y servicio domestico. Es difícil creer que en el siglo XXI, en una nación que se enorgullece de llamarse “Tierra de los Libres”, se trate a seres humanos como esclavos.

Según el Departamento de Estado, Estados Unidos es un país de fuente, de transito y destino para hombres, mujeres y niños, tanto ciudadanos del país como extranjeros, sujetos a trabajo for-zado, esclavitud por deuda, servicio involuntario y tráfico sexual. El tráfico puede ocurrir en áreas tanto legales como ilegales, inclu-yendo prostíbulos, salas de masaje, prostitución callejera, servicios hosteleros, agricultura, servicios de mantenimiento y limpieza, construcción, fabricas o incluso en cuidado de ancianos, entre otras cosas. Muchas de las víctimas del tráfico humano son indo-cumentadas que buscan escapar de la pobreza y opresión de sus países de origen.

En un intento de acabar con este tráfico humano, los Servi-cios de Migración y Refugiados de la Conferencia de Obispos lanzo el Movimiento Amistad, una campana de educación y con-cientización para comunidades inmigrantes, que son más vulnerables a la explotación y el tráfico porque trabajan en industrias muy poco reguladas.
