Letting God Be God: Read about this John of the Cross quote on praying for our needs and trusting in God’s love for us on our parish website home page under Resources.

Firstly because the Lord

knows what is suitable for

us better than we do;

second, the Beloved has

more compassion when

he beholds the need

and resignation of a soul

that loves him; third, the

soul is better safe-

guarded against self-love

and possessiveness by

indicating its lack, rather

than asking for what in its

opinion is wanting.

-John of the Cross (Spiritual Canticle, Commentary, Chapter 8 on Stanza 2, from The Collected Works of St John of the Cross, trans. K. Kavanaugh and O. Rodriguez, ICS, Washington DC, 1991, p. 489)

Blessings! The liturgical season of Christmas concludes with today’s Feast of the Baptism of the Lord. We are grateful to all who have helped us to keep holy this holiday time. The final Feast associated with Christmas is the Presentation of the Lord celebrated annually forty days after the Nativity. For those reluctant to part with your poinsettias, know that the crèche outside of St. Peter’s Basilica remains on display until February 2. The Feast of the Presentation of the Lord, sometime called Candlemas, is the World Day for Consecrated Life and, this year, Super Bowl Sunday. January 13 (also the optional memorial of St. Hilary) is rendered Monday of the First Week in Ordinary Time (think green) making next Sunday the Second Sunday of Ordinary Time without there ever being a First Sunday of Ordinary Time. We will count the Sundays until the start of Lent (Ash Wednesday is February 26) and resume counting after Pentecost with a few exceptions: Solemnities and Feasts of the Lord that fall on Sundays. Careful readers of last week’s bulletin saw that a new name was added to the parish staff roster. Earlier this month, we formally welcomed Gale Voytas to the St. John of the Cross Parish Team. She comes to our staff from St. Daniel the Prophet Parish where she was the Business Manager for the past 28 years. With the retirement of Pat Surdyk planned for the end of this month, Gale will initially assist our staff in areas of liturgy. Watch the bulletin in upcoming weeks for more information regarding these transitions. In 1908 at Graymoor in Garrison, New York, the Franciscan Friars and the Sisters of the Atonement held the first Church Unity Octave and have prayed for Christian unity, without ceasing, ever since. Today, Christians around the world celebrate the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity together January 18-25 with the encouragement of the World Council of Churches’ Faith and Order Commission and the Vatican’s Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity. This year’s theme, selected by the Christians of Malta, They Showed Us Unusual Kindness, is based on Acts 27:18 – 28:10 and emphasizes that it is through this “unusual kindness” that Christians are united. Daily prayers for the week of unity are at: geii.org Let us continue to pray for one another and for our parish. Father Reszel

Sister Anastasia/Support-A-Student Fund ~ 2nd Collection January 26 The Sr. Anastasia Fund, named in memory of our first school principal, is dedicated to educating our parish children in the faith. Begun when the convent building was sold to the IBVM community, it functions like an endowment fund in distributing funds to both the school and the YC program as reported in the Annual Report. The Parish Finance Committee administers the annual distribution. As always, your generosity to support the mission of our parish is most appreciated.

Collection for the Church in Latin America ~ January 19 Next weekend place your special envelope for the Church in Latin America in our regular collection basket. Your support helps people in Latin America and the Caribbean to have access to church programs and ministries that allow them to share in the life of the Church and grow closer to Christ. Thank you for your generosity.

Being Pro-Woman is Pro-Life

Given the scientific fact that a human life begins at conception, the only moral norm needed to understand the Church's opposition to abortion is the principle that each and every human life has inherent dignity, and thus must be treated with the respect due to a human person. This is the foundation for the Church's

social doctrine, including its teachings on war, the use of capital punishment, euthanasia, health care, poverty and immigration. Conversely, to claim that some live human beings do not deserve respect or should not be treated as "persons" (based on changeable factors such as age, condition, location, or lack of mental or physical abilities) is to deny the very idea of inherent human rights. Such a claim undermines respect for the lives of many vulnerable people before and after birth. USCCB

God of all life,

Help us to appreciate the great gift that is human life

formed in your image, a reflection of your holiness.

Help us to recognize you

in all whom you have created:

children not yet born,

families affected by poverty and war,

people of different abilities,

people from other lands, and

all who are victims of hatred and racism.

Help us to bear witness to the dignity

of all whom you have created,

regardless of stage of life,

or wealth, or ability, or color, or creed,

for every person is fully equal in your loving eyes.

Share with us your holy knowledge

that we are all your children,

each bestowed with inherent dignity.

May your justice reign forever! Amen.

Recent cultural conversations on the importance of women’s advancement have increasingly included abortion access, perpetuating a tragic assumption that ‘pro-woman’ and ‘pro-life’ are diametrically opposed viewpoints. This belief ignores the full reality of the beauty and dignity of all human life. To be pro-woman is to be pro-life; one cannot exist without the other. Abortion has negative outcomes for both a woman and her child, with the two-fold loss including both the destruction of the child’s very life and the destruction of the mother’s well-being. The aftermath of abortion for a woman often includes psychological traumatization and sometimes physical harm. Far from promoting dignity and freedom, abortion promotes the lie that a woman must harm herself and her child in order to be free. The idea that abortion empowers women is one of many lies in society that are, in reality, incredibly harmful to women. How many other areas in culture have women been told to endure pain and a “quick fix” for their own advancement, whether through the fashion industry, eating disorders, or cosmetic surgery? Abortion advocates perpetuate the myth that women must “jump through hoops” and do violence to themselves in order to preserve their equality and the freedom to advance in the world. Many women have rightly rejected the myth that they must “jump through hoops” just to be acknowledged and valued as human beings. The authentic, pro-woman position demands a woman be loved and valued for her own sake, exactly as she is—not because she has compromised herself. Abortion is anti-woman because it attacks some of what is most true and beautiful within a woman. Abortion is the very antithesis to a woman’s ability to nurture and bring forth new life.

Abortion advocates treat pregnancy like a problem or a disease. Pregnancy is not the problem; it’s the lack of care for the woman—for her own dignity and life-giving ability—that’s the problem. When society devalues motherhood and the ability to nurture life, making these things a source of shame and inconvenience, it increases the likelihood of a woman feeling like she has no option other than to abort her own child. We are called to love. A woman facing an unplanned pregnancy should never feel like she must face it alone. She needs to know that others truly care about her dignity and well-being, and that there is help through a variety of sources, especially from local diocesan resources like the Respect Life office, Catholic Charities office, or local pregnancy help centers and maternity homes. Both mother and child deserve experienced care and compassion; both deserve a future filled with hope. As we bear witness to and build the culture of life, in what ways can we show support, both for mothers facing unplanned pregnancies and for all women and the unique challenges they face? Society often objectifies women and tells them they need to reject their procreative and nurturing abilities just to be equal to men and to feel respected. But there is much we can do, in our personal witness, to counter these lies. When we celebrate and support women in all their unique gifts and contributions—including their life-giving capacity—they will be encouraged to make life-affirming choices for both themselves and their children. To be pro-woman is to be pro-life. If we want to change the cultural conversation, we must be a part of it. Background on the Gospel The baptism of Jesus is attested to in the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke. The account that appears in Matthew is the only one to include the dialogue between Jesus and John, however. Another difference in Matthew’s presentation of this event is the announcement made by the voice from heaven, which says, “This is my beloved son . . .” In Mark and Luke, this voice addresses itself to Jesus: “You are my beloved son . . .” The baptisms that John performs prefigure Christian Baptism. John baptizes for repentance from sin. In accepting this baptism, Jesus unites himself with all sinners even though he is sinless. In Matthew’s Gospel, John the Baptist distinguishes his practice of baptism from the Baptism that the Messiah brings: “I am baptizing you with water . . . He will baptize you with the holy Spirit and fire” (Matthew 3:11). The baptism of Jesus is another manifestation of Christ, another epiphany. Christ’s baptism inaugurates his mission. In an analogous way, our Baptism inaugurates our mission as Christians. This Sunday marks a transition from the Christmas season to Ordinary Time. In a way, today’s feast is the high point of the Christmas season. Before Jesus’ birth, angels announced to Mary and to Joseph who Jesus would be. At his birth, the shepherds and the Magi recognize Jesus as the Messiah. At his baptism, Jesus accepts that he is God’s son and inaugurates that mission. Loyola Press

Living the Gospel Have you ever heard a story and then retold it to make it “better”? Maybe it was a question of timing, or introductions, or clarifying motivation. There are many ways stories are told and retold, and often they do get better in the retelling. This is what happens in today’s gospel when we hear Matthew’s version of the baptism of Jesus by John. The story Matthew had at hand was from Mark. There, John is said to have preached a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. So one question naturally arises: why would (sinless) Jesus undergo baptism for the forgiveness of sins? Also, Matthew has an entire infancy narrative with Joseph and Mary privy to his identity, something entirely absent from Mark’s version. Thus, in Mark the heavenly voice says, “You are my beloved son” (addressed to Jesus). Not so in Matthew, where the heavenly voices says, “This is my beloved son.” In Matthew, the voice is not for Jesus’ sake but for the crowds. In these and in many other ways Matthew has improved the story—made it “better.”

Ultimately, the gospel passage we read today is not so much about the baptism of Jesus as it is about the revelation of Jesus’ identity to John and the others. Even the passive voice phrase “After Jesus was baptized” is only one word in Greek. Matthew spends much more time on the revelation of Jesus’ identity, the spirit of God, and the voice from heaven. As with so many episodes in the gospel, we would do well to focus on the theological insights conveyed by the author. ©Living Liturgy

Lord Jesus, you were baptized in the Jordan, disclosing your identity as God’s Son.

Give us the grace to recognize our identity as children of God by our own baptism.

Secure in this identity, we will be your witnesses to the ends of the earth.

In your name we pray. Amen.

Our baptism draws us into an intimate relationship with God. We are cleansed, claimed, and sent out as disciples. But what about Jesus? Why baptize the Word Incarnate? For thirty years, Jesus patiently waited for His moment. He knew His mission and He waited for the Father to nudge Him into action. Jesus’ baptism was the beginning of His public ministry. For the next three years, Jesus lived to create disciples. He used all of His energy to teach people about the kingdom of God. Today, as you ponder the baptism of Jesus, you should also take a moment to reflect on your own baptism and those of your family members. Talk with one another about how God is nudging you into discipleship. How might you, like Jesus, use your life to teach others about the kingdom of God?

Who is Jesus?

On this celebration of

Jesus’ baptism, the

Gospel of Matthew

provides a clear

answer: Jesus is the Son

of God.

The Lord will bless his people with peace. Psalm 29

God of the covenant,

you anointed your beloved Son

with the power of the Holy Spirit

to be light for the nations and release for captives.

Grant that we who are born again

of water and the Spirit

may proclaim with our lips

the good news of his peace

and show forth in our lives

the victory of his justice.

We make our prayer through Jesus Christ,

your Word made flesh,

who lives and reigns with you

in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

in the splendor of eternal light,

God for ever and ever.

Today, the Feast of the Baptism of Jesus, the Gospel (Mt 3:13-17) describes the scene which occurred at the River Jordan: Jesus, too, is in the midst of the penitent crowd which approaches John the Baptist to receive baptism. He stood in line. John would like to prevent him from [being baptized], saying: “I need to be baptized by you” (3:14). The Baptist, indeed, is aware of the great distance there is between him and Jesus. But Jesus has come precisely to bridge the gap between man and God: if He is completely on God’s side, He is also completely on mankind’s side, and reunites what had been separated. For this reason he asks John to baptize him, so that all righteousness may be fulfilled (cf. v. 15), namely, that the plan of God may be fulfilled, the plan which passes by way of obedience and solidarity with fragile and sinful mankind, the way of humility and of God’s full closeness to his children. Because God is very close to us, very close! At the moment in which Jesus, baptized by John, comes out of the waters of the River Jordan, the voice of God the Father is heard from on high: “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased” (v. 17). At the same time the Holy Spirit, in the form of a dove, alights upon Jesus, who publicly begins his mission of salvation; a mission characterized by a manner: the way of a humble and gentle servant, armed only with the power of truth, as Isaiah had prophesied: “He will not cry or lift up his voice, … a bruised reed he will not break, and a dimly burning wick he will not quench; he will faithfully bring forth justice” (42:2-3). A humble and gentle servant. This is Jesus’ way, as well as the manner of Christ’s disciples’ missionary work: To proclaim the Gospel with gentleness, but also firmness, without shouting, without reprimanding anyone, but gently and firmly, without arrogance or imposition. The true mission is never proselytism, but drawing people to Christ. But how? How is this attraction to Christ achieved? With one’s own witness, starting from the unwavering union with him in prayer, in adoration and in concrete works of charity, which is service to Jesus present in the least of his brothers and sisters. In imitation of Jesus, the good and merciful Shepherd, and moved by his grace, we are called to make our life a joyous testimony that illuminates the way, that brings hope and love. This feast makes us rediscover the gift and the beauty of being a community of baptized, that is, of sinners — we all are sinners — saved by the grace of Christ, truly integrated, by the work of the Holy Spirit, in the filial relationship of Jesus with the Father, welcomed into the bosom of Mother Church, making possible a brotherhood that knows no barriers or borders. May the Virgin Mary help all of us Christians to maintain an ever keen and grateful awareness of our own Baptism and to faithfully follow the path opened by this Sacrament of our rebirth. Ever with humility, gentleness and firmness. Pope Francis, Angelus, Feast of the Baptism of the Lord, 01.08.2017

How can Jesus’ baptism inspire me to live a just life? Do I hold myself and others accountable for establishing a just society?

When I make mistakes, do I acknowledge them and attempt to improve myself?

Dear God,

Thank you that you make all things new. Thank you for all that you've allowed into our lives this

past year, the good along with the hard things, which have reminded us how much we need you

and rely on your presence filling us every single day.

We pray for your Spirit to lead us each step of this New Year. We ask that you will guide our

decisions and turn our hearts to deeply desire you above all else. We ask that you will open doors

needing to be opened and close the ones needing to be shut tight. We ask that you would help

us release our grip on the things to which you've said "no", "not yet", or "wait." We ask for help to

pursue you first, above every dream and desire you've put within our hearts.

We ask for your wisdom, for your strength and power to be constantly present within us. We pray

you would make us strong and courageous for the road ahead. Give us ability beyond what we

feel able, let your gifts flow freely through us, so that you would be honored by our lives, and

others would be drawn to you.

We pray that you'd keep us far from the snares and traps of temptations. That you would whisper

in our ear when we need to run, and whisper in our heart when we need to stand our ground.

We pray for your protection over our families and friends. We ask for your hand to cover us and

keep us distanced from the evil intent of the enemy; that you would be a barrier to surround us,

that we’d be safe in your hands. We pray that you would give us discernment and insight beyond

our years, to understand your will, hear your voice, and know your ways.

We ask that you would keep our footsteps firm, on solid ground, helping us to be consistent and

faithful. Give us supernatural endurance to stay the course, not swerving to the right or to the left,

or being too easily distracted by other things that would seek to call us away from a close walk

with you.

Forgive us for the times we have worked so hard to be self-sufficient, forgetting our need for you,

living independent of your spirit. Forgive us for letting fear and worry control our minds, and for

allowing pride and selfishness to wreak havoc over our lives. Forgive us for not following your ways

and for living distant from your presence.

We confess our need for you…fresh…new…again. We ask that you make all things new, in our

hearts, in our minds, in our lives, for this coming year. We pray for your refreshing over us.

Keep your words of truth planted firm within us, help us to keep focused on what is pure and

right, give us the power to be obedient to your word. And when the enemy reminds us where we

have been, hissing his lies and attacking our way, we trust that your voice speaks louder and

stronger, as you remind us we are safe with you and your purposes and plans will not fail. We ask

that you will be our defense and rear guard, keeping our way clear, removing the obstacles, and

covering the pitfalls. Lord, lead us on your level ground.

We ask that you would provide for our needs, we ask for your grace and favor. We pray for your

blessings to cover us; we pray that you would help us to prosper and make every plan that you

have birthed in our heart to succeed. We pray that others would take notice of your goodness

and could not help but to say, “These are the ones that the Lord has blessed.”

Help us to be known as great givers; help us to be generous and kind; help us to look to the

needs of others and not be consumed by only our own.

May we be lovers of truth, may the fruits of your spirit be evident in our lives - your love, joy,

peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

Shine your light in us, through us, over us. May we make a difference in this world for your glory

and purposes. Set your way before us. May all your plans succeed. May we reflect your peace

and hope to a world that so desperately needs your presence and healing.

To you be glory and honor in this New Year and forever. In Jesus’ name. - Debbie McDaniel. Xavier.edu

ALPHA Wednesday Evenings Beginning January 22, 6:30-8:30pm

Alpha is a series of sessions exploring the Christian faith. Each talk looks at a different question around faith and is designed to create conversation. At each session you will find food, a talk and good conversation. Whether it's a group of friends gathered around a kitchen table, or a quick catch up over coffee and cake, food has a way of bringing people together. It's no different at Alpha. Most sessions start with food because it's a great way to build community and get to know each other. The talks are designed to engage and inspire conversation. They explore the big issues around faith and unpack the basics of Christianity, addressing questions from Who is Jesus? and How can we have faith? to Why and how do I pray? and How does God guide us? Probably the most important part of any Alpha: the chance to share thoughts and ideas on the topic and simply discuss it in a small group. There's no obligation to say anything and there's nothing you can't say (seriously). It's an opportunity to hear from others and contribute your own perspective in an honest, friendly and open environment. Alpha is open to adults of any age at any point on their faith journey. There is no fee. All sessions are held in the Parish Center from 6:30-8:30pm on Wednesdays beginning January 22. Register on the home page of our parish website.

LOSS Support Group Loving Outreach to Survivors of Suicide (LOSS) is a non-denominational program that provides a safe, judgement-free environment intended to help survivors heal from the emotional and spiritual trauma of losing a loved one through suicide. Participants learn to draw strength and hope from one another as they begin to share experiences and process a complex range of emotions within a caring and confidential community. Licensed counselors help facilitate all sessions. Call LOSS @ 312.655.7285 or for more information. This group meets in the Parish Center on the third Thursday of each month at 7pm.

Nourish Support Group Nourish is for anyone juggling the challenges of life, health, and career while caring for a loved one. Nourish provides practical and emotional support, shared experience and useful tools, all within a Christ-centered context. Discover the blessings that come from caring for another. Anyone is welcome to join us the second Thursday of each month from 1-2pm in the Parish Center.

Divorce & Beyond The Divorce and Beyond process provides emotional and spiritual support to those who have experienced divorce or those in the dissolution process. It is a faith-based, Catholic Christian support ministry that welcomes other faith traditions as well. Each session highlights an aspect of the divorce-recovery process. Topics include: healing, managing emotions, blame, loneliness, and achieving growth and personal happiness. We will meet at 7pm on Thursdays in the Parish Center beginning January 16. Register on our parish website.

Little Rock Bible Study All are welcome to join our Little Rock Bible Study. Sessions will begin on January 13 and meet on 12 Mondays from 1-2:30pm in the Parish Center except on holidays. The first study will focus on Women of the New Testament. Over 8 weeks participants will encounter the strength and needs of the women connected to Jesus and the Apostles. We will discuss how being a woman in the Holy Land during the time of Jesus and the Apostles shaped many of the challenges they faced in responding to Jesus. This study will be followed by a 4 session study of The Sermon on the Mount which challenges us to hear the sermon as Christ intended it , as our call to follow Jesus whose life illustrated its very ideal. It challenges us to hear it as a constant call to renewal. Email Roberta Gilbert with questions and to register at [email protected].

The story of creation will come alive and bring new theological and ecological understanding and meaning to your life. Art as a Contemplative Practice Thursday Feb 6, 9:30am-noon, Facilitator: Rachelle Barmann: This experiential workshop explores the use of art as a spiritual practice. Using a variety of mediums, we will experience how art can be used as meditation—connecting our minds, bodies and Spirit—allowing our souls to speak as we are drawn deeper into the Core of our True Self. Moving through the Energy of Grief Monday Mar 2 • 9:30am-2:30pm Facilitator: JoAnne Scullin: Grief is a powerful emotion that can leave one bereft. Understanding how we connect with ourselves and others energetically and finding techniques for healing can be helpful. Grief is a response to many life situations (from everyday stress to the end-of-life transition) that bring us to seek healing and wholeness and create a desire for spiritual and personal growth. Come and join us for a day of education and the experience of being with ourselves and our grief from an energy perspective. This offering is an expansion of the shorter session JoAnne led here at The Well last March.
