EDUCATION WEEK—MAY 5—10TH

The Virtue for the month of April is Justice April, with its celebration of Easter, has been assigned the virtue of

JUSTICE. At this time we celebrate the Resurrection of Jesus who is the

Just One who died for the sake of the unjust, that He might lead people

back to God. But justice is also an important part of Catholic teaching be-

yond Christ’s Death and Resurrection. The need to do justice comes from

the obligation to respect the dignity of every human person. At St. John

the Evangelist School, we will be working towards justice by treating each

other with respect, whether or not we are friends or classmates. We will

explore how much happier we are when we are dignified in our interactions

with others.

Autism Awareness Day —April 2nd

show our support (must wear uniform pants). Also, April 1st is the 5th

CATHOLIC SCHOOL ADVISORY COUNCIL

Chair - Mr. Bennett

Vice-Chair – Ms. Cesario

Treasurer – Mr. Banados

Secretary – Ms. Buttigieg

Our next CSAC meeting is Wednesday, April

15th at 6:15 p.m. Please join us in the staff

room.

NATIONAL VOLUNTEER WEEK We would like to thank our volunteer on April 29th

with an appreciation tea. Invitations will follow to

the volunteers who have supported our community.

CLASSROOM UPDATES We continue our regular reports on what we’re

doing in our classrooms. In May, we will have a fi-

nal update from our grades 3—6 classes.

ELP (Kindergarten)

Our kindergartens participated in a media literacy

field trip to see a black-light puppet show called

‘Going Bananas’, which was performed by the

‘Famous People Players’. They were very excited

and enjoyed the performance. After the show the

puppeteers demonstrated how they use the pup-

pets, and some students were able to try out the

puppets after the show.

Our classes have been learning all about Easter.

We have been preparing our hearts to celebrate

Jesus’ resurrection. The students have been

reading the Easter bible stories and watching

Easter videos. They have been creating art to take

home to share with their families when they cele-

brate Easter.

Grades 1 and 2

What's new in grades 1 and 2!!!! In our writing we

are incorporating the use of VOICE. This is one

of our SLIP goals. We are also working on SELF-

REGULATION, our second SLIP goal. This means

that we are being responsible and working hard to

focus when we are in the classroom. In Mathe-

matics, symmetry was an amazing math concept

that everyone quickly grasped and we created a

wonderful display that is hanging in the hall-

way. We enjoyed working in small groups to create

our 2D symmetrical designs. Also, in Math we are

working daily on the concept of regrouping. We

have almost mastered it!

Easter means colouring eggs and writing about it!

The stories of Jesus and the crucifixion are part of

our daily Religion lessons.

What to look forward to in April... We will have voice

in our writing and work on punctuation (quotation

marks). In Math we will be learning about fractions

and arrays. Our Art lessons will focus on Aprils show-

ers that bring May flowers. In Science, we will be

studying animals and will have a project on our animal

of choice. Our Social Studies unit will focus on our

heritage and a project will be sent home.

As always, a big thank you to the parents and their

continued support.

Grades 7 and 8

The last few months of the school year are upon

us, and the Grade 7 and 8 students will be very

busy. In Grade 7 and 8 Math your child is cur-

rently working on Algebra, with a focus on evalu-

ating algebraic expressions. Following that, we

will be working with fractions, calculating sur-

face area and volume, and experimenting with

probability. In Language both grades will be

working on reading and creating Poetry, and then

using the reading strategies to participate in

Literature Circles.

We will also spend some time with the Gr. 7s

creating a MyBlueprint account to assist them in

planning their pathways to success, while the Gr.

8s will be updating their profiles. For an in

depth look at the curriculum go to http://

www.edu.gov.on.ca/eng/curriculum/elementary/

ECO-CERTIFICATION

SJE was a Gold Eco-certified school. However, we did

not apply last year. We plan to work with the staff

and students at Ecole élémentaire Charles-Sauriol to

reactivate our status. As a community, we will launch

a number of initiatives that will be teacher supervised

and student led. Our Eco-Schools’ audit will be on

May 7th. Please discuss the following items with your

children. These are environmentally friendly actions

that can be practices at home too:

Re-usable water bottles only,

Litterless lunches,

Lights out in the school, and at home, whenever

safe and possible,

Proper use of recycling bins and garbage cans

(mindful sorting).

We look forward to becoming a greener school. April

17th-19th are the Earth Month School and Communi-

ty Clean Up Days https://www.tcdsb.org/board/

GRADE 8’s TRIP TO OTTAWA

St. John the Evangelist School Year of Charity

APRIL 2015: JUSTICE OCSGE: A Reflective, Creative, and Holistic Thinker: Because I have ideas, I have a purpose and I will live my life like Jesus. CST: Participation and Subsidiarity: It is a fundamental demand of justice and a requirement of human dignity that all people be assured a minimum level of participation in the community.
