The mothers of four priests got together and were discussing their sons. "My son is a Monsignor, said the first proud woman. When he enters a room, people say, `Hello, Monsignor.'"

The second mother went on, "My son is a Bishop. When he enters a room, people say, `Hello, Your Excellency.'"

"My son is a Cardinal," continued the next one. "When he enters a room, people say, `Hello, your Eminence.'"

The fourth mother, whose son was the rector of a rural parish, though for a moment. "My son is six foot eleven inches and weighs 330 pounds," she said with a smile. "When he enters a room, people say, `Oh, my God!'"

Please pray for all of our soldiers, our veterans and those currently serving. Some returning soldiers must deal with physical wounds, while some struggle with emotional injuries. Many of our veterans do not have jobs; some are homeless. A recent news item revealed that soldiers returning from Iraq have a high suicide rate. Please keep praying for these brave men and women, even after they have safely returned to their homes!

The Story of the Conversion of Saint Paul

Paul’s entire life can be explained in terms of one experience—his meeting with Jesus on the road to Damascus. In an instant, he saw that all the zeal of his dynamic personality was being wasted, like the strength of a boxer swinging wildly. Perhaps he had never seen Jesus, who was only a few years older. But he had acquired a zealot’s hatred of all Jesus stood for, as he began to harass the Church: “…en-tering house after house and dragging out men and women, he handed them over for imprisonment” (Acts 8:3b). Now he himself was “entered,” pos-sessed, all his energy harnessed to one goal—being a slave of Christ in the ministry of reconciliation, an

instrument to help others experience the one Savior. One sentence determined his theology: “I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting” (Acts 9:5b). Jesus was mysteriously identified with people—the loving group of people Saul had been running down like criminals. Jesus, he saw, was the mysteri-ous fulfillment of all he had been blindly pursuing. From then on, his only work was to “present everyone perfect in Christ. For this I labor and struggle, in accord with the exercise of his power working within me” (Colossians 1:28b-29). “For our gospel did not come to you in word alone, but also in power and in the Holy Spirit and [with] much conviction” (1 Thessalonians 1:5a). Paul’s life became a tireless proclaiming and living out of the message of the cross: Christians die baptismally to sin and are buried with Christ; they are dead to all that is sinful and unredeemed in the world. They are made into a new creation, already sharing Christ’s victory and someday to rise from the dead like him. Through this risen Christ the Father pours out the Spirit on them, making them completely new. So Paul’s great message to the world was: You are saved entirely by God, not by anything you can do. Saving faith is the gift of total, free, personal and loving commitment to Christ, a commitment that then bears fruit in more “works” than the Law could ever contemplate.

GREETINGS FROM BISHOP DOMINIC

Page 4

Dear friends,

As the year 2017 beckons, we look back with gratitude for the many blessings that God has bestowed upon us. We are aware also of our shortcomings and the fact that we could have done things in a better way. At the same time we ask God for the grace to aim higher in the goals we have set for ourselves for next year.

Here in the Diocese of Lodwar we see the hand of God in so many things. Recently we ordained two young men to the Diaconate and we hope, God willing, within the course of next year to ordain them to the priesthood. We now have 16 young men in the seminary and our prayer is that they will all persevere in their formation to the priesthood for we need lots of priests. Right now we have 55 priests and out of these only 12 diocesan priests. The rest are missionaries from all over the world.

Another blessing we received is the pres-ence of 5 young ladies in the Diocese. These ladies have come for a "come and see" experience here in Lodwar in response to an inspiration that is taking shape with the hope of starting a new group of consecrated women for the Dio-cese. We are still at the discerning stage and hopefully, if it is in accordance with God’s will, we will have a congregation of women willing to offer their lives, together with the rest of us, in the service of the poor and the evangelization of this remote corner of the world.

It is not an easy call for these ladies, seeing how difficult it is to work in such a harsh climate, in an area full of insecurity and with people who are still following their traditional way of life and with values that at times go contrary to the Gospel values that we are called to propagated. From my own experience, having been in Turka-na for the last six years, I see clearly that the Gospel of Jesus Christ is what is needed in order for lasting peace to prevail in the region. It is only when people respect life, see the others as their brothers and sisters and work the way that Jesus brought to all of us will there be a hope of a better life that transcends the miseries and sufferings that are experienced daily here. That is why we need men and women full of fire and zeal of the Holy Spirit to offer their lives for the sake of the Kingdom of God so that like Christ, they may bring that fullness of life to others. We hope and trust that this new congregation of nuns in the making will invigorate the missionary spirit in all of us.

GREETINGS FROM BISHOP DOMINIC

Another good development that we are looking forward to is the positive response by Bishop Romy of the Diocese of Atigue in the Phillipines to send two of his priests to come and work in our Diocese. These priests, who will now become "Fidei Donum" - gift of faith - will come and take over one of our parishes. This will enable us to open a new parish since we have not done that for a long time due to lack of personal and the necessary resources to support a new parish. Similarly the same Bishop has encouraged a group of nuns from his diocese to come and open a new mission in Lodwar. We are at the stage of signing a memorandum of understanding (MOU) between the two respective dioces-es. I met Bishop Romy when I went to Cebu - Philippines - in January this year to attend the International Eucharistic Con-gress. In April Bishop Romy came all the way to Lodwar to have a feel of how things are in the Diocese of Lodwar. I truly believe that this wonderful relation-ship between the Diocese of Antigue and the Diocese of Lodwar is one of the fruits of the graces of the International Eucharis-tic Congress and how our Lord is bringing His people together all the time.

That is also how I see the special relation-ship that is existing between the Diocese of Kalamazoo and the Diocese of Lodwar and, in my case with the Parish of St. Joe. God is always uniting people together for His own purposes. Ever since Bishop Paul Bradley, Msgr. Mike Hazard and Fr. John Peter came to Lodwar we have experi-enced many blessings and the deepening of our mutual relationship. The presence of Fr. Joseph Ekalimon in Kalamazoo is a testimony to this wonderful friendship that is bearing fruits in the lives of many people, including my own life.

At my own personal level, look back and see the fullness of support that I have received from all of you. I also see the many lives touched by the prayers and material support given individually and also at the parish and diocesan level. Whenever I meet the many students who have benefitted from the sponsorship program undertaken by you, the parishio-ners of St. Joe, I thank God with all my heart. Some of the old beneficiaries have already completed their studies, are em-ployed and are supporting their own fami-lies.

We also have structures that are in place now like the schools and Churches that were constructed with money donated by the Parish of St. Joe Kalamazoo, St. Joseph Watervliet and the Diocese of Kalamazoo. Mine is to say thank you for this fruitful relationship that has done lots of good to our Diocese and uplifted the lives of so many people. God bless you abundantly.

May I take this golden opportunity to wish you a very blessed Christmas season full of joy and happiness as we welcome once again our saviour Jesus Christ coming to us as a child in humility so as to open the Kingdom of His Father to us. God bless and be with you all in the new year 2017.

Light up your mind with a good book from the

Parish LibraryBy Lynn North349-3950

The hectic pace of Christmas is over. In the Catholic Church, we celebrate the Christmas season until the Baptism of Our Lord (this year January 9). Are you a Disney “nut”? We love Disney movies, and we have many of the old classics, most of which are on VHS tape. We have a fair amount of DVD movies too. If you’d like to watch a classic Disney flick from your childhood, with a child, or just by yourself, we have the movie for you! My favorite is Bambi.

I’m really not blood-thirsty, but I love murder mysteries, and our library has them too! I myself was surprised to find some in our church library, but this just con-firms that we have something for just about everyone! Come see what we have-movies, books, fic-tion and non-fiction.

The parish library is located on the first floor of the Bennett Building, and is usually open on Sunday mornings, from 10-11:00

a.m., on every Sunday we have Faith Formation classes. It’s the perfect opportunity to get your donut fix, visit with other parishio-ners, and pick up some reading material or good movies to enjoy in the coming week.

To use the library at other times, please call the parish office at 343-6256, ex. 101.

We ask that you borrow no more than 3 videos or DVDs at a time, for no more than 3 weeks.
