St. Joseph Parish Sunday February 25th, 2018

Please sign up for the Masses you know you will be attending. I realize we are still a month away from Holy Week but we need to begin planning ahead for those liturgies.

*** On the Friday’s of Lent the Stations of the Cross are prayed at 2:15 pm. The children of our parish school lead the prayers which are developed for a child’s comprehension level. They are relevant though for persons of all ages. You are invited to join the children in praying of The Stations on the Fridays of Lent at 2:15 pm.

*** In my homily last week I spoke about the word “repent.” I shared that “repent” means hav-ing sorrow and regret for one’s actions. But that it also means more. “Repent” also means reversing one’s direction – to turn around. Lent is about turning away from sin and turning toward God. How is the change of direction in your life going thus far? Have you been tempted to change your course back to your old ways? If so, do not despair. Remember, Jesus was tempted, too, while in the desert. But the Holy Spirit that drove Jesus into the desert also drove away the tempter from him. Embrace the Holy Spirit this Lent and allow it to be the driving force in your efforts to change the direction in your life. I concluded my homily last week by sharing with you the three “P ’s” – prayer, promise and praise. Prayer: “Jesus, I know you thirst for repentance, both my own and that of everyone I know. May I devote my life to leading people to Your loving, forgiving mercy. Promise: The reason why “Christ suffered for sins once, the righteous for the unrighteous was that he might lead you to God.” Praise: Glory to God! Jesus washed away our sins by His sacrifice on the cross! He has risen and will raise us from the dead. Praise Jesus forever! Embrace the three “P ‘s” this Lent and allow the Holy Spirit to help you turn your life around! Have a blessed Lent.

Faith Formation Corner

One of the cornerstones of having a successful Lent is giving Alms. Almsgiving has been a practice of the Faithful since Jesus’ time. We can look at giving Alms in the traditional way of offering our money to help those in need. We can also look at it another way…giving of our TIME.

Just as giving away our hard earned money can be a sacrifice, so too is giving of our time to help others. Whether it’s to someone in our family or a complete stranger, stopping what we are doing to offer our help and time is a way to grow in virtue and relationship with God. Take some time this week to think about how you can give more of your time to others.

Faith Formation Students in grades K-7 are working on their Almsgiving this Lenten Season. They are collecting their monies for the Catholic Relief Service rice bowls.

Second Graders have begun preparations to receive their First Holy Eucharist. Please keep them in your prayers, along with our Eighth Grade Confirmation Candidates who continue on their journey.

Parents, save the dates: Ministry Saturday, April 28 from 1-2:30, gives all students and opportunity to be a part of the solution to the challenges that so many are facing.

Summer Vacation Bible School, July 9-12, 6-8:30pm, always a fun time!

Organizations Welcome: Ministry Saturday has various organizations come to St. Joseph and allows our

We have Rosary makers, sleeping mats for the Homeless, blankets for abused Children, lunches for the homeless and superhero capes for patients at Children’s Hospital. Reverence Every Person

Lent is a time of growing closer to God. It is a time when Catholics seem extra motivated to engage in spiritual practices. The Church provides many means for us to deepen our faith this Lenten season… but we must use these correctly. How do we misuse spiritual practices??? And, what do we need to know in order to use these spiritual practices correctly? Our Gospel reading from Mark this Sunday is the story of the Transfiguration. It is a helpful Len-ten example for us to follow. Jesus takes Peter, James, and John (Lent is always communal). We misuse our spiritual practices when we make them all about our personal superhuman achievements. He leads them up a high mountain apart from their everyday life (Lent requires modification of our surroundings). We misuse our spiritual practices when we try to pile them on top of everything else happing in our everyday life. Lent is often compared to a dessert but can also equally be considered a desolate lonely mountaintop. This symbolism of “empty dessert” reminds us to empty out the junk which piles up in us, for if we do not clear away the clutter there will be no room for something new from God to come in. Then Elijah and Moses appear talking with Jesus (Lent is built upon a balance of divine wisdom contained in the Church). Elijah and Moses represent the Prophets and the Law. These two show that when God speaks to His People there is a balance of freedom and

limits, human experience and divine revelation, personal con-science and community standards. We misuse our spiritual practices when we neglect the balance be-tween Church guidelines and per-sonal circumstances. Ultimately, true balance is contained in the whole Church communicating together just as the two Old Testament figures talked to Jesus. Peter suggests that they make tents and stay there but a cloud representing God interrupts him (Lent means surrendering to God’s plan). We misuse our spiritual practices when we employ them in a rigid, controlling, closed-off, and routine way. Peter has to let go of his intention to live on the moun-tain. Jesus has brought them there to learn something not to freeze the moment and encase it in am-ber for all time. The cloud of God sweeps aside Peter’s plan in preparation for teaching them something. Our Lenten plans and sacrifices must be open, flexible, and ready to adjust to whatever God wants to teach us through this experience of Lent this year.

Finally, the voice of God says, “This is my beloved Son. Listen to Him” (Lent is a time of growing closer to God by listening to Him). We really mess-up our spiritual practices when we over-load on saying the rosary, helping at the fish fry, giving up coffee or beer or chocolate, fasting, reading our Black Book, donating to Rice Bowl, and following the Stations of the Cross but never even listen to Jesus. God asks for one thing. God demands one thing for this Lent.

God provides us with one perfect thing during Lent and we really don’t pay any attention. God gives us His beloved Son Jesus. God instructs us to use this holy season and informs us on how to bend every joy, and heartache, and sac-rifice to the purpose for which Lent was created… helping us to listen to Jesus.

We misuse our Lenten practices and spiritual disciplines when they become so numerous, so hardened, so automatic, so life-less, so transactional and dis-tracting that we forget about the one thing God wants us to do. Listen.

"And a voice came out of the cloud, this is my beloved Son, Listen to Him" (Mark 9:7)

Today's Gospel is an Epiphany, a manifestation, a making present, a revealing of God. It is also a Theophany, a manifestation of the fullness of God in Trinity: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The Father calls out, "This is my beloved Son, Listen to Him" (Mark 9:7), the Lord Jesus is Transfigured in all of His Divinity as God, and the Spirit of God surrounding all in the cloud". The voice of God speaks out of a cloud just as He did on Mount Sinai (Exodus 19:19-25). The very words, "This is my beloved Son" (Matthew 3:17), the Father spoke at Jesus' Baptism. However, there is one major distinction; at Jesus' Baptism the Father addresses His Son, on this Mountain, Mount Tabor, He addresses the three Disci-ples. But, in reality He is speaking to us. The world is full of voices, voices that promise to bring to us all that we desire. However, in following these voic-es we block out the Word of God, and the world's promises of wealth, fame, power, and success all fall short of our expectations. Instead, we fall into despair and despondency. We ask themselves, "Is there anyone who we can trust in the midst of all the disharmony that exists in the world"? Yes, we can trust in Our Lord, if only we listen attentively to His voice we would hear the Father speaking to us saying, "Listen to Him". You can always trust in my Beloved Son to be faithful. "If today you hear His voice, harden not your heart" (Psalm 95:7-8). Still, the VOICE of the world whispers to us, "This Jesus is out of touch with the realities of our time". In the si-lence of our hearts we hear the Father saying, "Listen to Him". Still, the voices of the world tell us, "You have too much to do, so much to accomplish, don't worry about listening to Him". Once again in the silence of our hearts we hear the Father saying, "Listen to Him". Still, the voices of the world tell us, "You don't really believe all that stuff that they say about Jesus, do you"? Again, the soft voice within us we hear the Father lovingly saying, "Listen to Him". It is so tragic that so many lives have been broken and destroyed because they listened to the world instead of "Listening to the Son". Maybe there is someone in your own family that avoids or refuse to "Listen to Him". If only they knew the power of His Word, if only they knew that He could fix what is broken, if only they knew that what seems to be destroyed could be restored, then they would seek Him out to hear His Voice. Nevertheless, there is a great lesson for us to learn: We are not alone when we fail to Listen to His voice after we have heard His call. The Disciples on the Mountain heard the voice of God. But did they "LISTEN"? No! Jesus told them that He would suffer, die, and rise from the dead. Ironically, right before this event, Jesus heals a blind man and the disciples continue not to see, hear, or listen. Jesus will heal another blind man shortly after this event, and the disciples will continue not to see, hear, and to listen. In the end, the Disciples needed to see and experience the Resurrection of Jesus to believe, like Doubting Thomas who had to see the nail wounds and the pierced side of Christ (John 20:24-29), and then, and only then did they believe and "Listen to Him". The question for each of us today is simply this: "Do you through faith, believe in Jesus and do you "Listen to Him"? Or do you, like the Disciples, need to see a Resurrection, or like Thomas to see His wounds? God Bless, Deacon David


St. Joseph School

Eighth graders have been working hard the last few weeks in class. They’ve created Google Slide presentations in Religion after researching the saint they would like to be named after for their Confirmation. Students also created a Saint “Card,” including important information they learned and also a prayer that is related to the Saint the 8th graders were learning more about.

In Literature, we are reading the historical novel Johnny Tremain by Ester Forbes. It is about a young man making his way in the world with the events leading up to the Revolutionary War taking place around him. This has also reinforced what we’ve been studying in History as well.

Eighth graders also had their 8th grade pictures taken for the yearbook and the class composite picture that will be hung in the hall. The 8th graders looked so nice dressed up! Keep up with what our class is working on by visiting our 8th grade page on the school’s website.

The basketball regular season came to a close last weekend and the Cardinals celebrated Parents weekend with some great basketball. It was the last weekend of competition for our JV teams and all three Varsity teams now look forward to the CYO playoffs. In the JV division: JVBoys #3 played an exhibition game with the 4th grade team from St. Pius and won 14-4. This team of 4th graders finish with a record of 3-4-1 in their Division and an overall record of 6-9-1, playing mostly against 5th (and sometime 6th) grad-ers. Congratulations to the team and their coaches Ted Borowicz, Tony Sawicki and Keith Russeau. JV Boys #2 traveled to St. Valentine for a non-league game on Saturday and started slow, but recovered fast defeating the Volts and then came home for their final division game against St. Pius #2 and they won 39-20. This team coached by Janet Haddad and John Pauli finished a perfect 10-0 in the Division for a Division Title and were 15-1 overall including a Thanks-giving championship. A terrific year! JV Boys #1 played a strong game against rival St. Pius and won 24-16 to even their final Division record to 4-4. They lost to a strong St. Edith team on Sunday and finish 6-10 overall. Coaches Curtis Yanoski, Mark Pitylak and John Mahoney did an excellent job with this team as they showed improvement each and every week. JV Girls #2 won their last game with St. Pius #2 by a score of 8-3. This was another team of all 4th graders playing against 5th and 6th graders and they ended up a fantastic 6-2 in the Division, just one game out of first place and had an overall record of 8-7. This team was led by Colleen Digna, Rick Gray, and Matt Greer. JV Girls #1 played a strong game against St. Pius #1 and won 24-15 to finish 10-0 in the Division for a Division Champion-ship. This team finished a perfect 19-0 with a Thanksgiving championship at St. Pius and a Christmas championship at Guardian Angels. Congratulations to coaches Becky Thomas and Sarah Gilroy and their team. All three varsity teams had great success this weekend and throughout the year. The Varsity Boys #2 defeated St. Pius #2, 36-13 to win the Division Championship with a 7-1 record. In a non-league game, they defeated St. Edith 31-18 to boost their overall record to 11-5. The Varsity Boys #1 also defeated St. Pius #1, 34-21 to finish 9-1 in the league and won their Division Championship. Their overall record stands at 16-3. And in front of a raucous, standing room only crowd, the Varsi-ty Girls defeated St. Pius #1, 26-19 to avenge an earlier loss to the Pirates and to win the outright Division championship, with a league record of 5-1 and and overall record of 12-4. All three Varsity teams enter the playoffs on Saturday, February 24 and St. Joseph will be hosting the Varsity boys games in the first round. Best of luck to these teams for the tournament.

By special invitation Who do you bring along when some-thing special is about to happen? We know Jesus took his inner circle: Pe-

ter, James, and John. But on one particular outing, that favored

grouping expanded into the Jewish equivalent of a fantasy dinner party,

with Moses and Eljiah pulling up a chair. No wonder Peter was tempted

to linger. And he wasn’t wrong: Pitching a tent with iconic teachers of Law and Prophecy is a great idea. Be a student of religious teaching, to appreciate human boundaries. Be a student of prophecy to know when

boundaries must be surpassed. Today's readings:

February 26th LENTEN WEEKDAY

How do you measure up? In biblical times getting a fair meas-

ure of grain at the market meant that the seller had to fill to overflow-

ing the bushel that was used, then press down and shake the grain, re-peating the process until the bushel was packed tight. The amount was then poured into the hem of the

buyer’s garment, to be carried to its destination. Cheaters undoubtedly existed, but they would be discov-ered soon enough and punished.

Though the technology of the mar-ketplace has changed since biblical times, the ethical principles remain

the same: Be honest in your business dealings, whether large or small.

You’ll sleep better at night and pros-per better by day! Today's readings:

February 27th LENTEN WEEKDAY

Be a Lenten do-gooder Today’s gospel reading from

Matthew gives us Lent in a nutshell: “Make yourselves clean, cease to do evil, learn to do good.” The spiritual

rewards for following this Lenten regimen are great. That’s why so

many of us try—but, sadly, too many of us fail. Our biggest stumbling

block seems to be the final step of learning to do good. It’s not that we

don’t know how to be good; we simply fail to make doing good a consistent, regular practice. This Lent, try following these steps to-ward becoming a daily do-gooder:

Volunteer in your parish or commu-nity, be helpful and available to fam-

ily and friends, donate money to charity, act cheerful—even when

you’re not. Today's readings:

Isaiah 1:10, 16-20; Matthew 23:1-12 (231).

LENTEN WEEKDAY Listen for the prophetic voice

The Israelites knew one thing about their prophets: They spoke the true word of God whether the message

was welcome or not—and frequent-ly it wasn’t, even to the point of

eliminating the prophet to still the voice they didn’t wish to hear. Jesus

encountered opposition as well. Plenty of people—especially power-ful people—wanted to get him out

of the way, but he and his gospel live on. Do you hear prophetic words

spoken today in our world? How are they received? How do you receive

them? Today's readings:

Jeremiah 18:18-20; Matthew 20:17-28 (232).

“Instruction shall not perish from the priest, nor counsel from the wise, nor the word from the prophet.”

March 1st LENTEN WEEKDAY

Heartfelt advice Sometimes you have to hear mes-

sages several times before they sink in, even ones that could save your

life. “Don’t text and drive.” “Eat healthy food.” “Get enough sleep.” When you do hear the messages, you might be tempted to ignore

them because to act on them may be inconvenient or take away time

from your other responsibilities. But in the end it’s in your own best inter-

est as well as those around you to take life-saving information to heart. That includes the many things from the rich Christian tradition. “Trust

God.” “Be faithful.” “Love your neighbor as yourself.” Which will

you take to heart today? Today's readings:

March 2nd LENTEN WEEKDAY; DAY OF FAST

AND ABSTINENCE Stick with the important stuff

Remember the treasure hunts of childhood—running around and try-ing to find something hidden away? Sometimes the clues given were ob-vious and sometimes they were con-fusing. But what a feeling when we found what we searched for. How we live our lives gives us clues to

what we treasure. Lent helps us look at those clues more clearly. What

are the treasures in our hearts? Ab-stain from the frivolous and find

what is important—the love of God. Today's readings:

Genesis 37:3-4, 12-13a, 17b-28a; Matthew 21:33-43, 45-46 (234).

“The kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people

that will produce its fruit."
