CATCH UP WITH WOTZUP  Mark Liprini

"aturday the 8th +arch ... :ack in the left hand seat of a +A4Kenya aircraft after almost a year. )he >elcome back? flight as into a ticklish

airstrip here you have to land uphill, andyou have to take off donhill. :ecause allmy +A4 re&currency checkouts are nottotally complete our chief pilot fle us in to drop off the pa;, and no empty, 5 got tofly it home again.

ots of calculations regarding ind, slope, surface, eight, elevation, temperature .... And pretty soon e ere bouncing don this rough strip and back intothe air again. )his original three eek secondment up to 8 th +arch has been e;tendedto mid&April by mutual consent. ntil end +arch 5 ill be covering for the toprogramme Caravan pilots, and during April 5 ill be spending time covering for theC0 pilot ho ill be on home assignment.

5t is really good to be back in Kenya, reneing old friendships, and being part of

a team that is making a difference in the lives of so many people in this part of theAfrican continent.

Our dear country (RSA) is going through a turbulent time, and it’s ever soeasy to allow ones focus to shift from where we are ultimately headed, andour calling along the way, to the troubles around us ....Paul in Gal 6:9 - “Let us not be weary in doing good, for at the proper timewe will reap a harvest if we do not give up” - he lived in a time of hange!

This encourages me

Eugene and Tina Wessels' News – an extract

Luke 1!1"  And one of them, hen he sa that he as healed, turned back and glorified (odith a loud voice.

  # $igeons %or a $rop

5 3ust have to include anothershort story, remarkably like the onereported in the scripture 5 Euotedabove. hile our American friendsere here e began to disperse anumber of heelchairs, crutches andalkers to help a group of disabledpeople throughout the areas heree minister. During a previous 3ourney into the Caia district 5

noticed an elderly man ho had losta leg and part of a hand in alandmine e;plosion. He asstruggling along, using a branch froma tree to try and prop himself up. 5stopped and told him that hen 5ne;t travelled through his area 5 ould bring him a proper set of light aluminiumcrutches. A short hile later, as 5 passed through the district again, 5 proceeded to dropoff a pair of light, modern crutches ith one of my sons in the faith. He in turn knehere the old man lived and took the crutches to him. )ime passed and once again heheard through African bush&telegraph that e ere in the area for the launch of theiteracy outreach ork.

He oke early, took his ne crutches and proceeded to alk the 0km beteen

his home and the place here e ere orking. 5 as called from the training sessionto meet him and discovered that he had brought breeding doves in a tiny ovenbasket, hich he duly presented to us as an offering of thanksgiving for the ne >legs?he had been given.

5n order to understand the full impact of this small story, perhaps it should alsobe mentioned that +oFambiEue is currently suffering through one of the orst hungerseasons that the country has e;perienced in almost a century. Currently the nesinforms us that more than -, people are starving, as the effects of El Nino areravaging the land. 4rom the depths of his on poverty, in the midst of his nothingness, this man came and gave us, ho already have so much, his food for a month. 5 asemotionally, physically and spiritually blon aay by his simple gesture of gratitude. He then got up once again and turned to alk the 0km back home. 5 as so deeplyaffected by this humble, impoverished man that 5 as hardly able to continue teachingafterard.

He also mentioned ho he no goes around shoing off his ne >legs? that theChristians had given him and testifying about the love of Christ e;tended to him.

NEWS FROM MAYOTTE

Dear 4riends,

Mur :ible "tudy at Koungou continues to be a time of blessing for us. )he groupis faithful even though e have had to cancel the meeting a fe times due to the

heavy rains e have been having. )he last study as particularly encouraging ith ourlocal friends starting to ask important Euestions rather than Euestions that seem to 3ustant to distract everyone from the real issues. At the moment e are dealing ith#esus teachings and again and again are shon the onderful ay He avoids gettinginvolved in fruitless discussions but brings his hearers back to the real issue, their needof forgiveness. Mur friends often sit ama%ed at His ansers especially to the teachersof the la, because they come up against very similar arguments in the religion theyhave been taught since their birth.

e continue to be very involved in our church activities ith a ne responsibilitythat has 3ust recently been added, that of teaching a group of people ho have askedfor baptism. "o each "unday morning at -.B a.m. e share the responsibility of aseries of :ible "tudies here e are teaching the basics of our faith. )his of course

involves a lot of preparation but at the same time is a great blessing to us as e arereminded of all that #esus accomplished for us on the Cross.

@lease continue to pray that e ill be kept in good health hich is so essentialfor us so that e can efficiently and diligently do all the ord has entrusted to us.

Tony Hawkridge Writes

5 as lucky enough to have an organisation pay for me to attend a daymeeting in ondon last month at = to the pound, and over =/ for a beer, 5as glad 5 asn9t paying for everything. )he meeting as at the headEuarters ofthe =oyal College of @hysicians, 3ust off =egent @ark. 5 as flying back the samenight the meeting ended, and as intending alking to the nderground andtaking the tube to Heathro, until a senior colleague discovered e ere on thesame flight and invited me to come ith her. "he is >Poyager ifetime @latinum?,hich 5 think means she has flon the eEuivalent of to the moon and back and theairline has made a lot of money off her! )en minutes later a large black +ercedesdre up and a suave gentleman ith a headdress took my rather tatty sports bagand computer case and placed them in the car's cavernous boot. 5t as one ofthose ne models in hich the engine cuts in and out hen you start and stop very fancy. e chatted in air&conditioned comfort as the buildings slipped by andbefore e kne it e ere at the terminal. +y brush ith the >other half? didn9tend there. e ere ushered into the e;press priority check&in Eueue, the fast lanethrough passport control and security and then up to the Air Canada lounge *eventhough e ere flying on "AA1. 5 sat sipping some e;cellent 4rench ine, using thefree ifi to read my emails, as the sun settled gently into the ondon skyline, andthinking that life could be a lot orse.

Mne of the first calls 5 received hen 5 returned to Cape )on as a >pleasecall me? from someone 5 kno ho lives in a shack in someone9s back yard in oneof Cape )on9s poorest suburbs. Could 5 helpQ

Ies, 5 did, and as glad to, but that is not the point. )he gulf beteen first classair travel and me is ide and alays ill be. :ut it is narro compared to the gulfbeteen those of us ho have a decent, regular income and those ho don9t. 5 canonly try and imagine the pain of not being able to provide for my family, and thesense of shame hich must accompany it. 5 have never been in that position andpray 5 never am. #oblessness is the societal issue of our time. 5 am not naRve

"t Kiaran9s can9t solve the country9s unemployment problems, or even a smallfraction of them. "ome of our members have, 5 kno, been involved in 3ob creationinitiatives. (reat 5 haven9t. 4aced ith the enormity of the problem, it is easy tobecome paralysed.

 Book Review - Jenny Strickland

Things Unseen by Mark Buchanan

I can't better the description of this book on the back cover:

"This book is about heaven and yet not. It is about our longing for heaven, our instinct for it. It is about eternity in our hearts. It is about the groaning

inside us that is both an acknowledgement of and a protest against death

and at the same time a cry for something else. For that which is beyond the

grave, stranger and larger than it - more enduring. It is about our yearning for things unseen. It is about

you and me longing for heaven and about living here on earth now in light of that longing."
