Dear friends and family of St Kiarans

Words cannot properly express how we have been blessed

by the exceptionally warm and loving welcome we have

    experienced from all of you

!t really is a moment to give than"s to #od for you$ for all

that he has done in bringing us to St Kiarans and forma"ing us feel completely at home.

%s far as ministry is concerned, it has all felt so seamless. There has been no sense of us

feeling li"e foreigners in a strange land. !m sure that ! can spea" on behalf of my family

when ! say that we have felt li"e part of the family in every sense of the word from the start.

! imagine that, if anything, you have had to ad&ust to me and accommodate my differences

'aturally, there are some areas where one has to familiarise oneself with new and differentprocesses. (ut this is to be expected. %ll the while, everyone has been very helpful and

gracious as !ve floundered a number of times along the way.

With regard to the church and its future) We really have only one message to proclaim, andthat is the #ood 'ews that *esus died for us on the cross$ his blood was shed as an

atonement for our sins. +f course, we should constantly explore relevant ways to express

this message to a changing world, without becoming gimmic"y-.

! am convinced of two things with regard to church life)

That faithfulness to the #ospel will "eep any church from losing its saltiness in its

community. !t is when fol" ma&or on the minors that a church loses its edge-.

% happy congregation will be a growing congregation. !f ours is an environment where

people can celebrate where they areon their faith/&ourney, instead of constantly bewail

where they arent, then life in the Spirit ensues.

These are the things ! strive for and this is, in part, reflected in a "ey text which ! hold dear

for effective ministry) For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking, but of

righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit, because anyone who serves hrist in this

way is pleasing to God and approved by men!"01om 23)24/256

%long with the above are these simple words of wisdom) The main thing is to "eep the main

    thing the main thing-

Than" you for loving us from the start

    7ours because of 8hrist

'alibali 0Ihosa for tell me a story-6 is a nationwide literacy pro&ect. Gvery wee" asupplement with a story and story tipsappears in local newspapers. ! started

ta"ing these to ?humlani when ! received

them in $he $imes J the stories are bylocal authors, in Gnglish and Ihosa and

    beautifully illustrated, even though they

are &ust on newsprint, and much en&oyed

by both staff and children. ! contacted

'alibali to share this, and they promptly

offered to deliver enough newspapars to

?humlani every wee" so that every childcan ta"e a story home We supplied each

child with a plastic folder in which to storehisher library-, and the exciting and

valuable spin/off is that more parents now

    read stories to their children.

'alibali has also run courses for teachers and parents.

5 September was World Citeracy Day. ! arrived at ?humlani as usual and was nonplussed to

see so many cars outside. !nside there was great excitement) ?humlani had been chosen tolaunch 'alibalis new product, and they were going to be on the eTLs news They were

launching a cellphone app through :xit 1each) thateveryone with a cell phone can receive stories in ; of

our languages and read them to their children.'early everyone in our country has a cell phone, but

only about =AB have access to a library. This wor"s

with all cell phones) a smart phone is not needed.

The children sat in their bright yellow t/shirts with

expectant faces. The TL crew was late, but theyen&oyed some stories and activities with the 'alibali

crew. >ilming of the three minute slot too" the wholemorning, but they were as proud as punch to be on

TL, and Mole"a was interviewed too.

! call them ripples. !f we are where #od wants us to

    THE CHURCHES IN MY LIFE

! grew up in 'orthern 1hodesia on a farm my father had bought in the early 2or funerals other arrangements had to be made. Des and !were married in a classroom of the local school, beautifully

decorated with a trellis/wor" of white flowers by friends whoincluded *oan Kelly who now lives in ?eers Lillage During

the afternoon there was a huge thunderstorm so that many of the guests cars par"ed on the

school rugby field became stuc" in the mud. %fter sixty years of marriage we can say that 9appy

is the bride that the rain falls upon-

% little 8atholic church was eventually built on one of the farms near the village and then some

years later some enthusiastic 8hristian farmers wives banded together to raise St. %nnes %nglican

8hurch, shared with other denominations. The young wives around my age committed themselvesto ma"e the long tapestry "neeler at the communion rail and even my good Scottish friend lent her

hand to this despite being staunchly ?resbyterian. We all greatly appreciated having a church toattend regularly and a resident priest always on hand.

When Des and ! emigrated to South %frica we went bac" to sEuare one as were again miles fromcivilisation, on the edge of the Springbo" >lats in the 'orthern Transvaal, and once again had

services in the hall of the school our children attended. To get there we had to travel over the most

awful roads through one of the (antustans and again we only had a service once a month as the

priest covered 3 churches in the Waterberg area and visited each in turn. ! did once persuade him

to come out to our little dorp to ta"e a service on a fifth Sunday and we had a wonderful mixedbunch of people attending, ranging from a #ree" +rthodox gentleman to a 8hristian Scientist lady

9owever we also played bowls during this period and were usually able to attend the communion

service at the school at 5 a.m. and then go on to bowls in the same village at .=A, a veryconvenient and happy arrangement.

% few years later we were transferred to a farm near (ar"ly West on the ban"s of the Laal 1iver

and in that town we found the %nglican church of St. :ary, the first church to be built by the

diamond diggers in 2542 and now declared a 9eritage building. !t was a most picturesEue little

church and was presided over by the 1ev. #eorge ?ressley who was also a 9istory and Gnglishteacher at Kimberley (oys 9igh and a one/time Deputy :ayor of the Kimberley 8ity 8ouncil. The

congregation was B coloured with seven white members who sat in the front of the church aswas the custom in those %partheid years and as the 1ev. ?ressleys sermons were apt to be very

erudite and full of history ! often wondered &ust how much his listeners really understood.

+n retirement we moved to the 'atal South 8oast and here ! &oined the local :ethodist church as

it was &ust down the road so for the very first time in my life ! could wal" to church and participate

in all that it offered. ! could at last &oin a bible study group and the Womens >ellowship, ta"e an

active part in an +utreach, help organise the library J and ! even eagerly volunteered to help with

the after/service tea ! was amaFed and delighted at how my 8hristian life grew and expanded and

how much ! learnt in those years.

Then once again we had to move, this time to >ish 9oe". ! was determined that ! would find a

church in the valley most li"e the one ! had &ust left. >or the first few months ! spent time at eachchurch in turn J until ! found St. Kiarans 8hurch and here ! found my home.
