The Importance of Reading and Studying the Bible (Part 2)

In last week’s article, I shared my story about how reading the Bible every day (specifically, reading the daily Mass readings every day) led me to return to the practice of the faith, even though I had stopped practicing the faith for almost 20 years. As the inspired word of God, the Bible is crucial if we want to know about Jesus Christ and, more importantly, if we want to develop a close, personal relationship with him. As St. Jerome said, “Ignorance of the Scriptures is ignorance of Christ.” Thus, reading the Bible is important, but it’s simply not enough. We also have to study the Bible. At St. Margaret Mary, we are blessed to have three different Bible-study groups, which are on hiatus during the sum-mer, but which will return in mid-September, after the Lomita Fair. I lead a Bible-study group in English on Thurs-day mornings from 10:00-11:30 a.m.; and, be-ginning in mid-September, we will continue our study St. Paul’s letters. Fr. Paul leads a Bible-study group in Spanish on Friday eve-nings from 7:00-9:00 p.m.; and, starting in mid-September, they will continue their study of the New Testament. We also have a Bible-study group in English that meets on a week-night evening from 7:00-9:00 p.m. They have finished their recent study of the Book of Exo-dus, and will start studying a new book of the Bible in September or later in the fall. When these Bible-study groups resume their meet-ings, we will put announcements in the bulle-tin and make announcements at the Sunday Masses. Most Catholic Bibles have supplemental ma-terials (such as articles, maps, and chronolo-gies) to help readers better understand the

Bible. Therefore, as you read your Bible, please be sure to read these supplemental materials. In addition, the U.S. bishops’ web-site (www.usccb.org) has supplemental ma-terials in English. Toward the top of the web-site, click on “Bible,” which leads to several relevant subsections, including “Understanding the Bible,” which in turn leads to a subsubsection called “Study Ma-terials,” which has many interesting articles on the Bible. The English-language Bible that I recom-mend is the New American Bible Revised Edi-tion, which is available for free on the U.S. Bishops’ website (www.usccb.org)—toward the top of the website, just pull down the menu for “Bible” and click on “Books of the Bible.” This is the version of the Bible that is used at Mass; and you can purchase a copy of it for $10 (softcover) at the parish office. The Spanish-language Bible that I recom-mend is La Biblia Latinoamericana, which is available for free through an app for your smartphone or tablet. In addition to reading the Bible on this app, you can also listen to the Bible through this app. Furthermore, you can purchase a copy of this Bible for $20 (hardcover) at the parish office. En el artículo de la semana pasada com-partí mi historia sobre cómo leer la Biblia todos los días (específicamente, leer las lecturas coti-dianas de la misa todos los días) me llevó a volver a la práctica de la fe, aunque había dejado de practicar la fe durante casi 20 años. LA PACIECIA Y LA BONDAD DE DIOS Por Humberto Beltrán

El evangelio de este domingo nos presenta una imagen de lo que somos los cristianos en medio de nuestra sociedad. El Señor nos habla de trigo y de cizaña, es decir de trigo que crece entre malas hierbas, pues no lo podemos separar. Co-mo cristianos , debemos de ser buen trigo en medio de una sociedad desafiante que empuja hacia el mal. Así, el ser cristiano, hoy como siempre, se nos presenta como un desafío. ¿Seremos capaces de conservar el dinamismo de nuestra fe en medio de una sociedad anticris-tiana? Dios siembra buena semilla en su campo, pero el diablo siembra la cizaña. Dice un refrán “donde Dios tiene un templo, el diablo abre una capilla”. Además hay tristemente un famoso club de sembradores de cizaña al cual a veces nosotros pertenecemos; los chismosos son los miembros más activos y maliciosos de este club. El bien y el mal coexisten en el mundo y hasta en nuestro corazón. En la comunidad cris-tiana convivimos justos y pecadores, buenos y malos. Dios tiene paciencia con nosotros, dán-donos tiempo y oportunidades para la conver-sión. Nos gustaría que todos fuéramos santos, aunque hay que recordar que algunos santos no fueron personas ideales de convivencia. Hay santos solitarios y santos comunitarios. Una persona santa no trabaja para imponer su ideal de santidad sobre los demás. Su vida tiene que ser una invitación a la santidad a través de sus ejemplos. En nuestra sociedad hay grupos muy li-berales que pretenden que todos acepten su fal-ta de principios morales para justificar su con-ducta. Nosotros por nuestra parte tenemos poca fe y menos paciencia, volviéndonos a veces into-lerantes con lo que creemos ser malo. Dios tiene mucha paciencia y bondad y espera el milagro de que la cizaña se convierta en trigo con su gra-cia; además, Dios tiene confianza en su semilla, y sabe que la cizaña no le va a impedir dar fruto. No hay que excomulgar a los demás pretendien-do arrancar la cizaña; las personas son más sa-gradas que sus opiniones; no hay que pedir que desaparezcan los malos sino el mal—no hay que rezar para que Dios te libre de un vecino des-agradable sino para que

Hay que tener cuidado con el celo excesi-vo y la intolerancia. ¿Cómo vas a saber si eres , paciente y compasivo si no eres puesto a prue-ba?

En el ejemplo del Señor podemos enten-der la imagen del trigo y la cizaña. El cristiano está en el mundo con la misión de ser trigo, pe-ro al mismo tiempo habrá otros que harán todo lo posible para impedir su crecimiento. La ciza-ña es el ambiente anticristiano que circula por todas partes, es la confusión religiosa, es la lu-cha entre creyentes, es la crisis por la que la iglesia está atravesando. Es todo un conjunto de circunstancias que ponen a prueba nuestra fe.

En todas partes respiramos un ambiente

anticristiano. Se nos entra por los ojos en la pornografía de anuncios y espectáculos. Lo ve-mos en el mercado del cuerpo y la organización del vicio, y en la confusión de ideas religiosas. Está en la adoración al dinero que ha usurpado el puesto de Dios.

Reflexión

Somos personas en proceso de formación

y perfeccionamiento; no somos productos aca-bados. En el Reino de Dios y en la iglesia, hay que tolerar la presencia de lo bueno y lo malo, como Dios lo tolera en su creación, respetando la libertad humana. No hay que olvidar que un día habrá un juicio de Dios en el que la cizaña será arrojada al fuego.

ADORACION EUCARISTICA

Además de nuestra Adoración Nocturna el primer viernes de cada mes, ahora tendremos exposición del Santísimo Sacramento durante el día en la iglesia. To defend human life, above all when it is wounded by illness, is a duty of love that God entrusts to all. We pray especially for baby Charlie Gard and his parents. We pray in particular that those in power may respect life at every stage and condition.

SMM Parish prays to end death by human hands: abortion, euthanasia, and capital punishment

In addition to our All Night Adoration on First Friday’s, we now have exposition of the Blessed Sacrament during the day in the church. It will begin after the 8:15am mass and continue until 6:45pm. At that time we will have Benediction followed by mass at 7pm.

All Night Adoration will continue in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel at 8pm.

Please consider spending an hour in prayer either during the day in the church or at night in the chapel.

CHRISTIAN SERVICE BACKPACK AND SCHOOL SUPPLIES

COLLECTION July 22-23, July 29-30

Each week our parish serves hundreds of families through our Christian Service Min-istry. Did you know that these families include a total of nearly 250 children? Together, let us help prepare them for a productive school year. Our goal is to supply backpacks and school supplies like, notebooks, pens, pencils, erasers, sharpeners, binders, line paper, scissors, color pencils, markers etc., to children registered in our program from kindergarten through high school, so all age supplies and backpacks for all ages are needed. THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT AND GENEROSITY

RETIREMENT PARTY FOR TERESA CARBAJAL Teresa Carbajal joined the parish staff in 1993 upon the invitation of Msgr. Joseph Sartoris to coordinate the Spanish-speaking Religious Education program. A long-time parishioner and volunteer cate-chist, she began by working along side Religious Education Director Don Boyd to implement a comprehensive program for the Spanish-

speaking children of our parish and their families. Under her leadership, the program has flourished. Her loving guidance has touched the lives of thousands of children. Over the last 24 years of service, her ministry has broadened to include many other parish programs and ministries: adult / parent education, catechist formation, sacra-mental preparation for children and adults, liturgy committee and the staff liaison for many parish organizations active in our Hispanic community. She worked hard to narrow the gap between the English and Spanish speaking of our parish. Her office for the last 24 years (near the large fountain adjacent to St. Joseph Center) has been the hub of many parish meetings, activities and event planning. While many English-speaking parishioners may not know her or had the pleasure of working with her, to our Hispanic parishioners she's a legend who is simply known as "Teresita." After nearly a quarter century of faithful service, we offer her best wishes in her retirement. Teresa Carbajal's gentle nature, charismatic smile and loving service will truly be missed. All are invited to an afternoon celebration Sunday, July 30th, from 1:30pm-5:00pm in Fr. Hegarty Hall.
