a ow that the fall season has arrived, all the parishes throughout our Diocese have started their “new

year,” so to speak. So it is with St. Marguerite! We have several items and activities to highlight: We have begun our new religious education program based on Family Formation; the first session took place on 11 September. Parents now come with their children one Sunday per month for a faith lesson. The other three weeks involve activities and lessons that parents and children work on together in their homes. Family Formation brings the religious education of children back to its proper instructors: the parents themselves. In fact, the Baptism ritual talks about how parents are the first educators in the ways of the Catholic faith in what they say and do. The Church prays that they may also be the best of teachers, and so do we at St. Marguerite. During the Faith Formation session, I spend time with the parents teaching a particular lesson and then Mary Ellen Tiernan explains the lessons that parents will work on at home with their children. Therefore, the faith will be brought into the home as the “domestic church,” which is a title the Church has always used for the home. Our desire is that the home will truly become a place of God’s presence and blessing through Family Formation. I thank our catechists who remain dedicated each year because of their love for our children and their desire to see these children grow spiritually. We welcome our new catechists, also, as we pray for another blessed year in religious formation. In January, Bishop Frank Caggiano will be joining us to present the lesson to the parents. We look forward to and welcome his visit. Our Tag Sale was a wonderful success! Priscilla Garamella and her faithful team (Joann Alfredo, Phyllis Babuini, Lileanne Blais, Grace Brennan, Brad Carlson, Melissa Carlson, Linda Corona, Trish Cratty, Diane Flood, Linda Frame, Fran Gozzi, Justin Gozzi, Johanna Grau, Jill Kessler, Denise Kurpiewski, Kathy Lathrop, Albert Mascia, Mary Ann Mascia, Jim and Josie McDermott, Linda Mora, Barbara Murphy, Greg Parsons, Barbara

Randall, Sandra Rourke, Erna Schoeneborn, Darlene Senete, and Cathy Wolk worked the week beforehand to make sure that everything was properly separated and tagged, as well as making sure that word got out for publicity. Many people walked away with their personal treasures! We look forward to Octoberfest’s Fruit of the Vine wine tasting on Saturday, 15 October. We encourage you to sign up for a wonderful evening learning about wine, enjoying delicious hors d’oeuvres, and spending time among friends. Priscilla has been working months on this, and we know that it will be a fun evening, so please sign up! The annual Golf Tournament was also a great success! This past Wednesday, many golfers spent the afternoon on the course and then returned to the hall for a delicious meal prepared by Diane Flood and her team. We thank Greg Dembowski, John Siclari, Trish Cratty, Jack Basso, and Diane for organizing the day over the course of many months and working to get our raffle prizes and cash donations. I also thank the many volunteers who worked the day of the Tournament to make everything run smoothly and who contacted the various foursomes to play. The Golf Tournament is the principal fundraiser for the parish, and we thank all who are involved to make it an annual success. Our religious education, Tag Sale, wine tasting, and Golf Tournament are just four examples of how our volunteers come together to make St. Marguerite events so successful. We encourage everyone to become involved in our many activities throughout the year. They are a perfect way to share time among friends and to make new friends along the way. Our parish is a family, and we want everyone to feel welcome to join our efforts to make St. Marguerite a true spiritual home. We thank Don Perley and Rejean Blais for making the necessary external improvements on the roof for safety and maintenance reasons. We are also in the midst of a thorough cleaning of the parish interior facility. Even though the new addition is only six years old, the facility was showing wear. Crystal Blue is a cleaning and maintenance company that our Diocese uses as well as the Archdiocese of New York. Crystal Blue is painting the classrooms,

the hall, offices, and sacristy. They are cleaning and waxing the floors, improving the sacristy from years of wear, and they will be providing a complete actual cleaning. The overall purpose is to make our facility attractive to those who would like to rent the space. We should be taking advantage of the classrooms and especially our hall. However, no one will rent from a facility that looks worn. Therefore, with the improvements, we hope to generate steady income to the parish. Our phone system will be upgraded this week. The problems connected primarily with voicemail should be fixed appropriately. Two months ago, the parish was burglarized again in the main church overnight. Someone tried to steal money out of the votive candle boxes; they stole nothing because no money was in them (I empty them regularly). We filed a police report. Since this is the second time in a little over one year that this has happened, I installed the locks on all the doors in the main church. I now lock the main church at night. The Adoration Chapel, however, is still open 24 hours. For safety reasons, I thought it was best to lock the church in case someone tried to steal money again at night or in the early hours of the morning; this could possibly threaten the safety of someone in the Adoration Chapel.

Soon, we will be slightly changing the format of our bulletin. It will now be more streamlined. As always, all of the information in the bulletin can be found on the parish’s website. In October, I will be meeting with the Diocesan Building Committee together with our contractor to discuss the renovation of the rectory. The last phase of the parish’s capital improvements involves the rectory, which is in need of updating and repair. The parish Finance Council has been working on this project since Fr. George was still here, and we hope to bring it to completion by next year. Finally, next June, the parish will be hosting William Shakespeare’s comedy, The Merry Wives of Windsor, on Saturday, 10 June, at 10 am. The cast has received their parts, and I will be playing Falstaff, one of the leads. Falstaff is a bit of a rogue because he wants the two (merry) wives to give him their money because he has run out it. The wives, however, realize his scheme and set about to humiliate him unknowingly in three hilarious situations. We invite the parish to come see our entire cast perform one of Shakespeare’s funniest plays—you will not be disappointed! May you have a most blessed and holy week! Fr. Shawn William Cutler

The Rich Man and Lazarus Our Choice: The readings today make it clear that the outcome of our afterlife rests on the choices we make in this life. The choice for the rich man could not have been clearer. That choice sat outside his door every day of his life. While he lived in luxury, at his very doorstep lay Lazarus, a poor sick man tended to only by dogs in the street. (The rich man has no name. Only Lazarus is named.) Yet this obvious opportunity for the rich man to choose the way of the Lord is lost to him in the distracting abundance of worldly riches. The choice is clear and the signs are obvious; we need only pull our attention away from the distractions of wealth, abundance, power, security, and safety to see what we must do. It is not easy to do, and for some, not possible in this world or the next. In the end both the rich man and Lazarus die. That is the fate of all mortal beings. It is our fate as well. The choices we make in this world shape the quality and outcome of our lives. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

K n i g h t s o f C o l u m b u s The Knights of Columbus have been at the forefront of raising public awareness on the situation of Middle Eastern Christians and in organizing relief efforts on their behalf. These Christians have lost everything for

their faith. It is entirely possible for one of the oldest forms of Christianity to disappear completely, with many churches dating back to St. Paul’s time in danger of being destroyed and disappearing forever. The situation is dire. The United Nations is not supporting these Christians. Fortunately, support is coming from private donations like those streaming in from the website christiansatrisk.org. God cares for His people through people. Become part of God’s people who care. Contact Grand Knight Vince Lupo to join local Council 11913: (203) 775-4848, [email protected]. All parishioners of St. Marguerite’s who wish to volunteer at the parish must complete the Diocesan-mandated Safe Environments: Protecting God’s Children Awareness Training Program before volunteering. Visit www.virtus.org to register for an upcoming session.
