The Pastor’s Page by Fr . Shawn Wil l iam Cutler

T his week, our nation once again honors our Veterans who have served our country with dedication and loyalty,

whether living or now deceased. For the United States, Veterans’ Day is particularly important because the freedoms that we enjoy began with revolution to fight for life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. From the wars of the Revolution to Afghanistan, we benefit today from the sacrifices that thousands of men and women have made so that we can enjoy God-given freedoms inherent in our human nature. At the risk of my repeating a cliché, one should always remember that “freedom is never free.” There is always a cost, and sometimes that cost is paid in blood (hopefully, as a last resort). Many soldiers return from the battlefields wounded—physically, emotionally, psychologically, and spiritually. To kill another person should never be taken lightly (even though abortionists would have us believe that killing innocent human beings is a right, which it is not). The fact that so many men and women are willing to sacrifice for our betterment speaks to the best of America today. The thousands of brave soldiers who are willing to fight for genuine freedom stands in stark contrast unfortunately to many cowards in Hollyweird, professional sports, marketing divisions of corporations, religious leaders,

academia, and news media who are part of the “bash America at all times” group. This is the crowd that praises “taking a knee” whenever the national anthem is played; this is supposed to pass as an act of virtue. America and her authentic values are not only ridiculed, dismissed, and trashed, but this group is strong in actively reframing the country because it controls so many media outlets; if you control the media, you control the message. Where is the robust study of American history today instead of force-fed anti-American propaganda? Nevertheless, “hope springs eternal,” as the proverb says. There will always be patriotic Americans who will challenge American-hating nonsense that has become quite popular today. There will always be patriotic Americans who actually endure the serious risks and grave sacrifices on the front lines instead of offering uninformed, pathetic criticisms from the side lines. There will always be God’s grace invoked by His faithful people to continue blessing the greatest nation in the world. May we never take our freedoms and God’s graces lightly or for granted. The following prayer is from the Divine Mercy Shrine composed several years ago. May God continue to bless America always, especially under the patronage of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Immaculate Conception!

Almighty God,

We ask for blessings on all those who have served our country in the armed forces.

We ask for healing for the veterans who have been wounded in body and soul in conflicts around the globe.

We pray especially for the men and women in the thousands with injured bodies and traumatized spirits. Bring solace to them, O Lord. May we pray for them when they cannot pray.

Have mercy on all our veterans from World War II, Korea, Vietnam, Iraq, and Afghanistan. Bring peace to their hearts and peace to the regions they fought in.

Bless all the soldiers who served in noncombative posts. May their calling to serve continue in their lives in many positive ways.

Give us all here present today creative vision to see a world that, growing weary with fighting, moves to affirm the life of every innocent human being.

We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Jesus, I trust in You!
