August in north Alabama means different things to different

people – the beginning of a new school year, the continuation

of the dog days of summer, a final getaway before fall, or a

countdown for college football.

For our congregation, it means Rally Day, August 18, is near,

and a full assortment of ministries at St. Mark’s will begin. You

will hear much about these opportunities during our potluck at

noon that day; remember, we will have one service at 10:30AM.

Rally also has many meanings – an energetic gathering [think

pep rally], a recovery from a health setback, taking the lead in

baseball after falling behind, and a regrouping in order to “fight

the good fight.” Elements of those meanings apply to our life together. I pray that you will

approach this occasion with renewed energy and enthusiasm for the Church. I ask you to

examine your financial stewardship, and if you have fallen behind this summer, it’s time to

rally so that the Body of Christ remains strong and healthy. Together, let’s celebrate, serve,

and make disciples for Christ !

On a personal note, thank you for your prayers and expressions of care as Mary and I visit

the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN on July 30. We are hopeful that the many problems that

stem from her hypercalcemia will be remedied and wellness restored.

In Christ’s love,

from Pastor Gary

August 4 – Pastor Dennis Fakes will lead worship while

Pastor Gary and Mary are at the Mayo Clinic.

Drivers Needed St. Mark’s provides volunteer drivers for the Meals on Wheels program. Meals on Wheels delivers nutritious lunches to homebound people. We are looking for regular drivers and substitute drivers who can volunteer about 2½ hours on the third Tuesday and fifth Thursday of the month. You will be driving a well-planned and documented route in Huntsville.

The Job Description is here:

http://www.seniorview.com/meals-on-wheels/mow-volunteer-job-description

Please contact the church office if you might be available to serve as a driver.

Long-time member Allyn Griffiths entered the Kingdom of heaven on July 5, and his

memorial service was held at St. Mark’s on July 15. Please keep Myrna and her loved ones

in your prayers during this time of grief and grateful remembrance.

Please continue to pray for Melissa Brown, Jennifer Matthews, Chrissie Provancha, and Sarah

Radovich as they prepare for the birth of their children.

May the goodness and mercy of the Lord be upon these members of our church family who

seek God’s healing power: Carol Craig, Betty Hampton, Charlene Lechner, Willie Quanstrom,

Carl Rieger, Mary Soop, and Mary Ann Williams.

We extend our deepest sympathies to Ted and Susan Mueller on the passing of Susan’s sister,

Virginia Davis, who passed in Lexington, SC on July 21.

Our dear friend Evelyn Jensen will be turning 95 on 09/05. Birthday cards and phone calls

would be a wonderful surprise. Please contact the church office for Evelyn’s current address

and phone number.

The initial meeting of the Call Committee for an Associate Pastor will be Sunday, August 11.

The members are Norwood Cutter, Leah Gradl, Brian Hackenberg, Kathy Sieja, Sue Volz, and

Jared Waylander.

Please remember that September 8 is God’s Work, Our Hands Sunday. There will be service

opportunities for all ages.

Here we go again! A new year of Sunday School

begins on August 25 with new classes for everyone!

classrooms. For Pre-4th grade, lessons begin with the story of Isaiah; for 5th & 6th

grade, lessons begin with creation; for 7th & 8th, see confirmation; for 9th-12th,

one area of study will be world religions.

To get ready for a new Sunday School

year, we will come together for a Unity

Service to celebrate our youth and honor

our teachers. Following the service, we

will gather in the fellowship hall for a pot

-luck lunch. During our lunch together,

we’ll hear about all of our learning

opportunities for adults and youth.

Faith and Discovery: begins on

August 25: God: A Human History by Reza

Aslan. An exploration of humanity’s quest to

make sense of the divine, and a fascinating

history of our understanding of God. Reza

Aslan describes himself as a Cultural Muslim

interest in Judaism as well. Coordinated by

Kathy Sieja. (Room #0 - basement)

Lectionary: What is a lectionary? A

lectionary is a list of scripture readings assigned

to be read on a particular day. This class will

study and discuss the week’s readings used in

Sunday worship. Led by Tom Duncan.

(Gathering Place)

Monday: Word Alive Beginning August 19, 11 am in the Fellowship Hall. Come and be a

part of a group study and discussion of 95 Prostheses by retired ELCA Pastor Frank Honeycutt. He writes in the Preface, “The Church, the body of Christ, is at a juncture where old Bible stories known by Luther need recasting and reframing with a generation of people for whom biblical narrative is foreign and even downright weird…Each section of the book includes a general introduction (to the church season) followed by ten essays based upon Bible stories familiar to that season and chosen with new Christians, study groups, and Christian formation teams in mind. Each essay concludes with questions or exercises inviting deeper reflection and understanding.” Pastor Gary will preorder books, and participants can pay for their book when the groups meet. Led by Pastor Gary.

Tuesday: Word Alive Beginning August 20, 6-7 pm in The Gathering Place. See above for

class description. Led by Pastor Gary.

Wednesday: 6:06 AM Devotions, Prayer & Fellowship, in the chapel

Thursday: Caritas Beginning August 22, 6-7 pm in The Gathering Place. To begin, this class

will be reading and discussing Love Big by Rozella Haydee White. We have forgotten that we belong to each other, becoming disconnected as fear, hatred, and division have infected our lives together. Be introduced to the power of revolutionary relationships, which lead us to love in ways that change us all. Led by Traci Billman.

Adult Education: Mid-week

Adult Education: Sunday School

Committed: will begin again on

August 25 following Rally Day to resume

lotion; in addition, candles and nail polishes. After that, we’ll supplement with

random items like jewelry, make-up, etc. Please put any donations, labelled, in

the blue bins in Communication Central. Thanks!!
