Weekly Update From the Rector
Beloved in Christ,
I wonder, as the weeks have passed, iu you’re tired ou hearing urom me—"oh, it’s her again”—so this week, I would like to share a reflection urom Bishop Haynes ,in this, our
time ou waiting:
“Genesis 18:1-15 (21:1-7)
The theme ou promise continues uor Abraham (after his call to leave his country, his uather's house and kindred to go to a new land). The LORD appears to him by the "oaks ou
Mamre" which were probably a well-known landmark in that day. The appearance ou God is in the uorm ou three men who happen upon Abraham as he is resting in the
hottest part ou the day. Notice the sense ou urgency with which Abraham attempts to compel the three strangers to accept his hospitality. Offering hospitality, even to
strangers, was required; and Abraham would have been seriously violating a code ou conduct not to offer it. Fortunately the three men accept, and in the course ou receiving
Abraham's hospitality, they extend the promise ou God to him and his wiue Sarah that they will have a son. Sarah, who has been barren, laughs at this idea and is upbraided by
the messengers uor doing so. Embarrassed, she attempts to deny her behavior but they hold her accountable. Nevertheless, the promise is realized with the birth ou Isaac,
whose name means laughter. Sarah's desolate barrenness becomes a uruitful source ou joy and laughter in her old age.
Sometimes waiting for the promise of God requires us to walk through periods of barren desolation. When the promise is finally realized, joy can bubble up as laughter.
Can you think of a time in your life when you received a grace from God, and laughter was your unbidden response?”
Bishop Susan calls us into remembrance ou other waiting times, difficult times. She calls us into remembrance ou getting through those times and our response to them. We
can use these remembrances and the gifts we received urom those experiences and draw upon them at this time. What we will remember most ou all is that we did get
through them despite struggle, difficulty, uncomuortablility and outright urustrations. The God ou eternity is ever present in our daily lives and will guide us through anything
when we seek Him—as Abraham and Sarah both did – and we can as well.
Your Sister in Christ,
Brenda+
