WELCOME TO ST. PAUL PARISH

Weekly

Message

Endowment and Matching Funds: Did you know that St. Paul Parish has an Endowment fund established for the future of this parish? It is such a blessing to give to those generations after us and also receive the blessings from those who cared for this parish before us. Please keep St. Paul Parish in mind for your Estate planning. Also, if your company has a matching funds program, your gift of stewardship can be matched! Contact Sherri Meyer in the business office for more details on either opportunity.

What’s Happening This Week! Dec 17 School Spelling Bee, 9am Cafeteria Dec 18 Discuss Scripture, 8:30-10am Family Rm Dec 21 St. Paul Campus Closed for Maintenance

Welcome! We hope you accept this as your invitation to re-discover the truth, wonder and mystery of the Catholic faith. As your brothers and sisters in our worldwide Catholic family, we want you back.

If you are a practicing Catholic and have decided to make St. Paul your church home, simply call 262-968-3865, come by or visit www.stpaulgenesee.net to start to get registered.

Did you know? Our parish website has a link to Fr. Dan's past homilies. If you wished you would have been taking notes during his homily, you can go back to listen to Fr. Dan's message again after mass. The link is on the right hand side of the front page of the parish website. www.stpaulgenesee.net.

GOSPEL MEDITATION ENCOURAGE DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF SCRIPTURE

In Christianity, we hear often about the "Good News." We might often associate it with Jesus' compassion to the poor, his healings and miracles, and the salvation he won for us. In today's Gospel, we read of John the Baptist. "Exhorting them in many other ways, he preached good news to the people." Yet as we examine the rest of the reading, we see examples of John's preaching. If you have two cloaks, give one away. Don't cheat others out of their money, extort, or lie. And, of course, the warning that the Messiah is on the move and "his winnowing fan is in his hand to clear his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into his barn, but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire." Merry Christmas?

Not only do John's listeners enjoy his message, but they seem to think he might be the awaited Messiah! To understand today's Gospel, it's important to understand the Jewish people. For most of their history, God's chosen people had been under someone else's heel. They were slaves in Egypt. Their kingdoms were ravaged first by the Assyrians, then the Babylonians. Now they were under the yoke of the Roman Empire. Familiar with being strangers in a strange land, welcoming the stranger, caring for the vulnerable, and enacting justice was incredibly important to them as a people. While John's words may seem odd or strong to our modern ears, this call to justice was welcome, even if it was directed at the hearer.

The truth is, no one is exempt from John's call to repentance. We all have further to go in the Christian life. We can all grow in virtue and love our neighbors more generously. The Church gives us the Advent season to examine our own hearts. Did any of John's warnings resonate with you? That could be a great thing to bring to Jesus this week!

Human Concerns

For the Kids

Sharing the Gospel - How can you show you love God? Instead of keeping all of your clothes and food, share some with people who don't have any. Be happy and thankful for all God has given you. When you love God more than money, you'll be happy to share.

Prayer - Dear God, help me to share happily with others.

Mission for the Week - The next time you go grocery shopping with your parents, ask if you can pick out some foods to share with the poor. As a fami-ly, talk about how thankful you are for the many ways God takes care of you.

Our parishioners/families are able to find, FOR FREE, children's movies, family movies, study guides (Scriptural and other), podcasts, downloadable books, and so much more. You can stream hundreds of films, life-changing talks, and dramatic stories of saints. In terms of encouraging Catholic identity for our families, this would be a great site to recommend on a regular basis.

Small Groups during Lent

What? Lent? It's not even Christmas yet! Consider this invita-tion to be a small group host (don't think leader, think host). Training and support will be provided. Or think guest. Either way, if you'd like to get more involved, or go deeper in your relationship with God, or meet others to talk about faith, first, please pray about it. Then, pay attention to the nudging of the Holy Spirit (and me, Mary Kral).

The recent experience with Rich Curran on 11/7 hearing about blessings and Jesus and our personal stories of God in our lives, combined with the beauty of faith sharing in Alpha and other small groups, is a compelling reason to offer more experiences to MORE people! Your help is needed. So, pray. Pray about how you can answer the call to host or join a small group during Lent. Pray about actually sharing, out loud, your most recent "God moment" with someone in your family or someone at work. Pray for our parish family of faith.

How is God calling you to RISE UP? Contact Mary Kral for more information.
