Many of Jesus' disciples who were listening said, "This saying is hard; who can accept it?" Since Jesus knew that his disciples were murmuring about this, he said to them, "Does this shock you? What if you were to see the Son of Man ascending to where he was before? It is the spirit that gives life, while the flesh is of no avail. The words I have spoken to you are Spirit and life. But there are some of you who do not believe." Jesus knew from the beginning the ones who would not believe and the one who would betray him. And he said, "For this reason I have told you that no one can come to me unless it is granted him by my Father." As a result of this, many of his disciples returned to their former way of life and no longer accompanied him. Jesus then said to the Twelve, "Do you also want to leave?" Simon Peter answered him, "Master, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. We have come to believe and are convinced that you are the Holy One of God."

E n aquel tiempo, Jesús dijo a los judíos: "Mi carne es verdadera comida y mi sangre es verdadera bebida". Al oír sus palabras, muchos discípulos de Jesús dijeron: "Este modo de hablar es intolerable, ¿quién puede admitir eso?" Dándose cuenta Jesús de que sus discípulos murmuraban, les dijo: "¿Esto los escandaliza? ¿Qué sería si vieran al Hijo del hombre subir a donde estaba antes? El Espíritu es quien da la vida; la carne para nada aprovecha. Las palabras que les he dicho son espíritu y vida, y a pesar de esto, algunos de ustedes no creen". (En efecto, Jesús sabía desde el principio quiénes no creían y quién lo habría de traicionar). Después añadió: "Por eso les he dicho que nadie puede venir a mí, si el Padre no se lo concede". Desde entonces, muchos de sus discípulos se echaron para atrás y ya no querían andar con él. Entonces Jesús les dijo a los Doce: "¿También ustedes quieren dejarme?" Simón Pedro le re-spondió: "Señor, ¿a quién iremos? Tú tienes palabras de vida eterna; y nosotros creemos y sa-bemos que tú eres el Santo de Dios".

Be patient and persevere in the practice of medita-tion. Be content, to start with, to make progress only by degrees. Later on you will have legs that will ask for nothing but to run or, better, wings for fly-ing with.

Be happy to obey. It's never easy but it is God we have chosen as our portion. Accept that, as yet, you are only a little bee in its nest but, very quickly, it will become one of those wonderful workers so skilful in making honey. Always remain humble be-fore God and men, in love. Then our Lord will speak to you in truth and enrich you with his gifts.

It can happen that bees will cover great distances over the meadows before they find the flowers they want. Afterwards, worn out but satisfied and laden with pollen, they go back to the hive to carry out the silent but fruitful transformation of the flowers' nectar into the nectar of life. You, do likewise: when you have listened to the Word, meditate on it attentively, study its different aspects, seek out the depths of its meaning. Then it will become clear and luminous to you; it will have power to trans-form your natural inclinations into a pure uplifting of the spirit, and your heart will be always more closely united to the heart of Christ.

Ten paciencia y persevera en la práctica de la meditación. Al princip-io conténtate con no adelantar sino a pasos pequeños. Más adelante tendrás piernas que no desearán sino correr, mejor aún, alas para vo-lar.

Conténtate con obedecer. No es nunca fácil, pero es a Dios a quien hemos escogido. Acepta no ser sino una pequeña abeja en el nido de la colmena; muy pronto llegarás a ser una de estas grandes obreras hábiles para la fabricación de la miel. Permanece siempre delante de Dios y de los hombres, humilde en el amor. Entonces el Señor te hablará en verdad y te enriquecerá con sus dones.

Ocurre a menudo que las abejas, al atravesar los prados, recorren grandes distancias antes de llegar a las flores que han escogido; se-guidamente, fatigadas pero satisfechas y cargadas de polen, vuelven a entrar en la colmena para re-alizar allí la transformación silenciosa, pero fecunda, del néctar de las flores en néctar de vida. Haz tú lo mismo: después de escuchar la Palabra, medítala atentamente, examina los diversos elementos que contiene, busca su significado profundo. Entonces se te hará clara y luminosa; tendrá el poder de transformar tus inclinaciones naturales en una pura elevación del espíritu; y tu corazón estará cada vez más estrechamente unido al corazón de Cristo.
