A Message From Our Pastor...

Dear friends,

On Thursday, October 17th, we will celebrate the ancient feast of St. Ignatius of Antioch. I thought it would be nice to write a few words about this amazing Saint from the early Church.

While we are unsure of when Ignatius was born, tradition tells us he was consecrated the second Bishop of Antioch by St. Peter.

For his refusal to renounce the Catholic faith, he was condemned to death in the Roman arena during the reign of the Emperor Trajan at some point between 98 and 117 AD. Ignatius was taken from Syria to Rome in chains.

On his way to the Eternal City, he wrote seven letters to various Churches in Ephesus, Magnesia, Tralles, Philadelphia, and Smyrna, as well as a letter to Bishop Polycarp of Smyrna, and to the Church of Rome. These letters contain a wealth of details about the life of the second century Church. In many ways these details sound much like the Church today. For example, Ignatius makes reference to Bishops, presbyters, and deacons. He argues that the Bishop represents God the Father, the presbyters—the Apostles, and the deacons—Jesus Christ.

Furthermore, he mentions the importance of being in communion with the Bishop, who as a leader, ensures that the faithful are preserved from falling into error. In terms of error, Ignatius was keen on attacking the heresy of “Docetism”. Docetism was the commonly held belief that Jesus Christ was not truly a man, rather he simply seemed to take on human flesh and thus avoided the suffering of the cross. Ignatius makes it clear that Jesus Christ, while being “timeless” and “invisible” as God, actually became visible and submitted to suffering on our behalf.

Finally, Ignatius acknowledges the power of the Holy Eucharist, which he calls the “medicine of immortality” and an antidote to death.

We are inspired by the life, teachings, and martyrdom of St. Ignatius of Antioch. As we gather for the celebration of Holy Mass this Sunday, we are proud to be in communion with our Bishop and to profess the true faith that the Son of God has truly become man for our salvation. Repenting of our sins, we humbly approach the Altar, whereby we receive—the “medicine of immortality,” and trusting in the infinite mercy of God, may we live forever in the life to come.

Relying upon the prayers of Mary, Mother of the Church, St. Peter, and indeed All the Saints, I am faithfully yours in Christ Jesus,

Fall Book Study ~ King Lear The start date for the Fall Book Study is Tuesday, October 15th at 7:00 p.m. in the Parish Hall. Books will be available for purchase and pick-up after Masses the weekend of October 12th and 13th. Questions please contact Andi McGoran at 995-0987.

Following the first week of the ACA collection St. Peter Parish has pledged $22,779.58 toward our parish goal of $89,023. Thank you to all those who have pledged to this pivotal Diocesan collection. Please remember that the ACA supports essential ministries and the administrative needs of our Diocese. Once our parish surpasses our goal, the overage is returned to our parish. If you have not yet contributed please prayerfully consider doing so. Every contribution is crucial and needed!

This year’s theme: “Called by Christ, to be formed in our faith,

seek our vocation and answer our call to holiness.”
