SHARING OUR GIFTS Autumn is the season for harvesting and sharing the fruits of our labors. This week’s scriptures use images of the harvest, family life, pregnancy, and investment to describe the abundant harvest in the reign of God. We discover that sharing the gifts we have been given brings eternal rewards for everyone. In the Gospel parable a master entrusts his possessions to three servants before going on a journey. Each is given some talents. What they do with those talents determines what the master will do with them when he returns. How about us? What are we doing with our talents? How will our Master treat us when he returns?

From 7 - 8 pm on December 4th, 5th & 6th. Topics include

Monday - “Where are we going - a clear map” Tuesday - “Family Life: Serving where the Lord has

planted us” Wednesday - “The Community according to ACTS”

ALTAR AND ROSARY SOCIETY

MEETING, Monday, November 20 at 7 pm in the KC hall.

All ladies are welcome to attend and join this ministry!

A Big thank you to all the members of

the Altar and Rosary Society, Knights of Columbus, Altar Servers and other volunteers for making

this past weekend’s turkey dinner a great success!

The High School Youth Group will not be meeting Sunday, November 19 or

Monday, November 20 as families are

preparing for their Thanksgiving Holiday.

Give a Texas welcome to Father Byron Miller, C.SS.R. He will be visiting our parish this weekend to talk to us about

the Liguorian Magazine. This is a wonderful magazine published by the Redemptorists since 1913.

Father Byron is the President of and Publisher of the Liguorian magazine.

One of the many articles that caught my eye was

“God’s Love Song” God’s love song echoes through the ages. It is the music

of eternity that can be heard whenever the people of God gather for praise and worship, but it is also

heard when the hungry are fed, the stranger is welcomed, and the prisoner is set free.

A Vocation View Don’t just bury your talents. Dream your best dreams about your life and then live It to the

fullest. God calls you to live in happiness.

Stewardship by the Book Good stewards are like the industrious and reliable servants in today’s Gospel,

Prudently using and multiplying the gifts entrusted to them by God.

THE CATHOLIC DAUGHTERS Will have their regular monthly meeting on

Tuesday, November 21st at 6:00 pm at the Religious Education Center.

We welcome all ladies of the parish to join us!

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Earlier this autumn, we looked at how our Eucharistic Prayers have been enriched by the approval of several new prayers to augment the old Roman Canon. For us, there are the four standard pray-ers, three for Masses with Children, and the most recent addition, the former Swiss Eucharistic Prayer with four alternative forms (now known as the Eucharistic Prayer for Masses for Various Needs and Occasions). We also have two Eucharistic Prayers for Masses of Reconciliation. The source for these two pray-ers is the request by many bishops for a special prayer for the “Holy Year” of 1975. Originally, the committee in charge was commissioned to write a single prayer, but the theme proved so rich that it gave rise to two. The first is based on and develops biblical texts on reconciliation. The second starts with the experience of living in today’s fractured world, and how the Spirit calls us to reconcil-iation and peace. Not everyone was happy with all this creativity, saying that if too many were pub-lished, it would be difficult for the Vatican to control further requests. Everyone thought the pope would put strict limits on the prayers, but in the end he said he was willing to open doors that had long been closed. Although he approved them for a period of only three years, they were never for-mally removed from the Sacramentary and have been incorporated into the new Roman Missal.

Origin and History of Advent

The exact time when the season of Advent came to be celebrated is not precisely known. Of course, it was not in practice before the celebration of the Nativity and Christmastide began; the ear-liest evidence shows that the feast of the Nativity of Our Lord was established within the later part of the 4th century. There are homilies from the 5th century that discuss preparation in a gen-eral sense, but do not indicate an official liturgical season. A Synod held in 590 established that Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from November 11th until the Nativity would be offered according to the Lenten rite. This and other traditions, such as fasting, show that the period of time now established as the Advent season was more penitential (similar to Lent) than the liturgical season as we know it today. A collection of homilies from Pope St. Gregory the Great (whose papacy was from 590-604) included a sermon for the second Sunday of Advent, and by 650 Spain was celebrating the Sundays (five at the time) of Advent. So it seems the liturgical season was established around the latter part of the 6th century and first half of the 7th century. For the next couple of centuries, Advent was celebrated for five Sundays; Pope Gregory VII, who was pope from 1073-85, reduced the number to four Sundays.
