The life of our parish is guided by the parish mission which is to educate, form and transform persons into disciples of Christ and to foster their active participation in the life, work and mission of the Church. All parishes are called to be “schools of discipleship” assisting the People of God with the ongoing life long conversion required to be followers of Jesus Christ. It is in our parishes, families and in the world that we are living witnesses to Christ’s love and the faith we profess. Discipleship is our invitation to continue Christ’s saving mission here and now and through generous stewardship change the world!

Stewardship Reflection for The Epiphany of the Lord — January 8, 2017

In today’s second reading we hear the teachings of Saint Paul to the members of the Church at Ephesus. He proclaims that he, and they, are stewards of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and therefore stewards of God’s loving, unifying and inclusive grace. He also proclaims that the Holy Spirit is at work within each of them, if only they would be open to the Spirit. Today, our world races by with intolerance, violence, desperate poverty, fear and division. At the beginning of this New Year, perhaps it is appropriate to reflect on Saint Paul’s words and ask ourselves how we can be good stewards of the Gospel today. How will we allow the Holy Spirit to work within us?

CATHOLIC CHARITIES DONATION BIN Catholic Charities received $2,689 as a result of our parish clothing donations from June 1st, 2016 to November 30th, 2016. These funds combined with monies from parishes in a similar program throughout the Archdiocese enabled Catholic Charities to provide 93,598 nights of shelter to 1,226 homeless individuals and families during Fiscal Year 2016.

Please take the time to clean out your closets and help support Catholic Charities many programs by donating your clothing, novels, children’s books, shoes, household items and toys in the donation bin located in the parking lot. If you have any questions, need a tax receipt or would like to schedule for a larger pick up (sorry no furniture) please call toll free number at 877-343-3651. Thank you for your generosity.

HOSPITAL VISITATION: We are dedicated to visiting the sick because Jesus has shown us that our presence to them is not simply comforting but healing. Hospitals in recent years have been forced to carefully monitor visits by non-family members. Clergy, therefore, are welcome but must know beforehand, who is currently being treated in a hospital or other healthcare facility.

Therefore, please notify us when a member of your family is currently or shortly will be hospitalized or in another healthcare facility so that we can be a familiar presence to them during their stay in a local hospital, rehab center or nursing home. Please call the parish office at 973-379-3912 and leave the name and location of your family member. Thank you!

This Week is Na onal Migra on Week January 8th‐14th

For nearly a half century, the Catholic Church in the United States has celebrated National Migration Week, which is an opportunity for the Church to reflect on the circumstances confronting migrants, including immigrants, refugees, children, and victims and survivors of human trafficking. The theme for National Migration Week 2017 draws attention to Pope Francis’ call to create a culture of encounter, and in doing so to look beyond our own needs and wants to those of others around us.

With respect to migrants, too often in our contemporary culture we fail to encounter them as persons. We do not take the time to engage migrants in a meaningful way, as fellow children of God, but remain aloof to their presence and suspicious of their intentions. Let us all take the opportunity to engage migrants as community members and neighbors all of whom are worthy of our attention and support.

CARDINAL JOSEPH TOBIN, C.SS.R., INSTALLED AS THE SIXTH ARCHBISHOP OF NEWARK

On Friday, January 6th, Cardinal Tobin was installed as our new archbishop before an overflow crowd at Newark’s Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart, at a Mass attended by six Roman Catholic cardinals and some 60 archbishops and bishops from throughout the country. Some 500 priests and deacons from the Archdiocese, neighboring New Jersey and New York dioceses, and the Archdiocese of Indianapolis, as well as civic leaders and representatives of New Jersey’s Jewish, Protestant and Orthodox communities, were in attendance. Some 2,000 people attended the service.

Also in attendance at the Installation were members of Cardinal Tobin’s family and guests from the Archdiocese of Indianapolis, where he had served previously as Archbishop.

Next week’s bulletin will have more coverage of the installation and further information about Cardinal Tobin.

PRAYER FOR VOCATIONS Father, Creator and Ruler of the universe, you enrich your Church

with the gift of lives freely given in dedicated service to your Church.

Through this generous example, touch the hearts of many others to follow your call, so that future generations also may experience the joy of coming

to know your Word and responding in faith.

We ask this through Jesus Christ your Son, our Lord. Amen.

Father John gets email … and while he tries to answer them each personally, some are good ques ons that the whole parish should know his answers. This sec on will run periodically when some of the ques ons should be

shared (anonymously, of course.)

You just celebrated your first Christmas with us ... what do you think? With Monday’s celebration of the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord, our celebration of Christmas and the Christmas season come to an end. It was a glorious celebration for the parish!

Even before we moved into the Christmas season, Advent set the tone. We must acknowledge and thank you for your dedication and commitment not only for the success of the Giving Tree but for that is done throughout the year. Our outreach to so many in need might appear to go unnoticed, but it certainly makes us all proud of the work we do in the name of the St. Rose Community, especially our Christmas Parties which were held for homeless families in Montclair who are served by the Interfaith Hospitality Network and in our annual party for senior citizens at St. Augustine’s in Newark.

There are many people to thank; too many to mention by name. But we are grateful to all who took the time despite their own busyness to make the church look beautiful and our liturgies true celebrations of joy.

Our Liturgical Ministers across the board deserve a big thank you – Extraordinary Minsters of Holy Communion, Lectors, Greeters, Ushers and Hospitality, Altar Servers – all helped in making sure that our liturgies ran smoothly while adding to the prayerful and celebratory nature of the masses.

Special thanks to our Music Ministry, our leaders of song and all the choir members, along with our guest instrumentalists, who worked so hard to bring out the best in all of us.

I would be remiss if I did not thank those who I work with here at St. Rose; they are a great staff committed to service not only this time of year, but year round.

And finally, most importantly, a special thank you to you, the parishioners of St. Rose Parish, for your generosity, especially in these past few weeks.. The rectory received many delicious gifts – cookies, cakes, breads and a few spirits – all of which are deeply appreciated.

Our Christmas collection total to date is $193,464. Thank you to the team of counters that were as busy as Santa’s elves, thank God! Your generosity is amazing!

Let us always remember that, as St. Mother Teresa taught us, we may feel challenged at times, but together we can (continue) to do great things for God.

The Knights Thank You !!! St. Rose Knights of Columbus have wrapped up their third annual Coats for Kids fundraising drive with the generous support of our St. Rose parishioners. On November 17th, a team of St. Rose Knights distributed 420 coats to families at St. Joseph Social Service Center in Elizabeth NJ. (photo). St. Rose parishioners contributed over $8,000 this year for the campaign, and $20,000 over the past three years, enabling the Knights to distribute 1,060 coats during that period. Since 1983 St. Joseph Social Service Center has served the materially poor and homeless of the Elizabeth area by providing food, clothing, and medication. St. Rose Council Knight Tom Abella led the St. Rose campaign.

ST. AUGUSTINE’S CHRISTMAS PARTY: Many thanks to all the volunteers who donated food items and volunteered to serve at the Christmas Party for the Seniors of St. Augustine's parish. Our original date of Saturday, December 17th had to be postponed at the last minute due to the inclement weather. All of the food donations that our parishioners provided for that date were brought down to the Sisters who then packed up the food in “to-go” containers and distributed them to the homeless at Penn Station in Newark.

We then rescheduled the event for Saturday, December 31st. Many thanks to all of the St. Rose volunteers who provided a special holiday dinner for the senior citizens who are served by the Missionaries of Charity.

Student Scientists Study Genetics!

Students in grade eight have been learning about genetics. As a way to model how dominant and recessive genes are passed from parent to offspring, students worked in small groups to create alien bugs. Each alien bug had a different combination of alleles (traits). They found that although each alien bug came from the same set of parents, that not all the offspring would exhibit the same exact traits.

Stewardship of Time, Talent and Treasure Report on how the parish shared their gifts this December

Thank you to all who so generously shared your gifts of time, talent and treasure this December. Here is a recap of some of the many ways people volunteered to support the ministry of the Church:

Boy scouts Troop 17 Wreath Sale: The troop expresses their gratitude to the parishioners and staff who so generously supported their wreath fundraiser this year. The Scouts decorated and sold a record number of wreaths this year. The funds raised will support the numerous scouting activities in the coming year.

Catholic Charities Bin: Donations left in the bin located in the parking lot are picked up on a weekly basis. Your donations enables Catholic Charites to fund shelters for homeless individuals and families.

Christmas Giving Tree: Thank you to all who donated gifts and gift cards to support the annual collection. Special thanks to Carol Comes & Irene Langley for their many hours coordinating the collection, sorting all the gifts, and overseeing all of the deliveries of the donations.

Christmas parties for IHN and St. Augustine’s: Volunteers helped us host Christmas parties to benefit the homeless served by the Interfaith Hospitality Network and senior citizens at St. Augustine’s in Newark.

Knights of Columbus: Parishioners donated over $8,000 for the Coats for Kids Drive enabling the Knights to purchase and distribute 420 new coats for those served by the St. Joseph Social Service Center in Elizabeth. Each month, parishioners generously support the sauce sales which helps the Knights further their outreach efforts. The annual KofC Christmas party was a lovely way to celebrate the season. Thank you who volunteered and supported these activities.

Ladies Auxiliary: The annual Christmas Luncheon was a big success. In addition, many Christmas gifts were collected for those in need at Our Lady Help of Christians School in East Orange. Fr. John led the annual Advent morning of reflection. Thank you to the board members and committee chairs for their efforts to provide these activities for the parish.

Life Lighters: The annual Christmas luncheon for parish seniors at Baltusrol was a lovely afternoon event. Thank you to all who participated and planned the lunch.

Liturgical Ministries: During the Advent and Christmas seasons, all members of liturgical ministry were called on to serve at the numerous liturgical opportunities offered at the parish. The music ministry’s prayerful celebration of Lessons of Carols was a magical evening which joined together all of our choirs, vocalists and instrumentalists. The funeral ministry assisted at numerous funerals and sent cards to all those who lost loved ones this year. Thank you to the countless liturgical ministers who helped make our liturgies so prayerful and meaningful.

Monthly Food Collection: Each month, our parishioners donate non-perishable food to support Catholic Charities Emergency Food and Nutrition Network which serves numerous food pantries throughout the Archdiocese. Thank you to all the parishioners who generously donated food which filled the blue van.

Religious Education: Countless volunteers helped support the many activities offered in our religious education programs such as the nativity reflection, fair trade sales, Confirmation students hosted a dinner for parish seniors, Bridges Runs to feed the homeless, and service projects for those in need. These activities are in addition to the ongoing volunteerism of our catechists, hall monitors, office help and others.

Small Faith Sharing Groups: Thank you to all who took time to participate in one of our small faith sharing groups to reflect on the Advent scriptures. Special thanks to the Adult Faith Formation team.
