From Deacon Conrad Wojnar Dear Parishioners: For the 47th year in a row, a half a million or more marchers will gather this coming Friday at the Washington Mall and march up Constitution Avenue and past the Supreme Court building. The average age of these marchers will be in their early 20’s and many colleges and high schools will send caravans of buses. Why all the effort? Well, these brave souls are commemorating the infamous Supreme Court decision which essentially swept away all state and federal abortion laws, removed virtually all protection of unborn children, and found a new right to abortion someplace in the penumbra (shadows) of the Constitution (actual language used in the decision). Since that tragic day (January 22, 1973), over 60 million unborn babies have died from legal abortion in the U.S., leading to untold sorrow and difficulties for the women and families involved. Since then, the battle has been fought long and hard—in the legislatures, in the courts, in the realm of public opinion, and in the domain of helping potential abortive women with positive solutions, for both themselves and their babies. The opposition has fought back hard, because abortion forms the ideological centerpiece in their attempt to form a post-Christian culture, but also because it is a big and lucrative industry. Despite Planned Parenthood’s protestations to the contrary, abortion is both their number one revenue source and their number one “service” provided. As pro-life efforts have resulted in some restrictions and roadblocks to the practice of abortion, “pro-choice” advocates have erupted in a flurry of lies and misrepresentations about the nature and intent of the pro-life movement. Meanwhile they have tried to hide and camouflage their own greed and coercive practices. In recent years, much political polarization has occurred. States like Alabama and Ohio have attempted to outlaw abortion altogether, hoping for victory when their appeals reach a more conservative Supreme Court. At the other extreme, states like New York and Illinois have passed sweeping legislation, not only making abortion legal at any stage of gestation and for any reason, but allowed to be performed by almost anyone, and not even protecting babies who are born alive as the result of a “botched” abortion. But the greatest weapon that the pro-choice movement has at its disposal is apathy. They have actually worked very hard to achieve an attitude of “so what?” among Catholics and other Christians. On the other hand, our greatest weapons are prayer—and the truth. Using these exceptional tools, let us renew our commitment to work for the protection of the unborn and of their mothers. In solidarity with the marchers in D.C., please join me Friday in a day of fasting and prayer. In Jesus, through Mary, Deacon Conrad

11th Annual “Souper Bowl” Sunday
Super Bowl Sunday is right around the corner. As we enjoy the game, let’s keep in mind
those in our community who don’t have enough to eat during the cold winter months. The Peace &
Justice Committee is asking you to bring two or more cans
of soup to church on the weekend of Super Bowl Sunday,
February 1st and 2nd Last year we collected almost 800 food items.
Let’s aim to break that record this year. Boxes will be available for the soups at
the entrances to church. All soups will be donated to local food pantries.
Help tackle hunger in our community.
11o Domingo Anual "Souper Bowl"
nuestra comunidad.
