Dear Parishioners,

Today’s first reading, from the Book of Exodus, presents the Ten Commandments. It is entirely fitting that we take the time to reflect on these precepts early on in our Lenten journey. For, as Saint Paul tells us in the second reading, “the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength.” God gave these commandments out of love, not to constrain us, but to free us of the lure of worldly wisdom.

Unfortunately, our society has long been marginalizing God’s and working to make them irrelevant. Even years ago, the following study yielded these distressing facts: “Put to the test, Americans recalled the seven ingredients of a McDonald’s Big Mac hamburger and members of TV’s “The Brady Bunch” more easily than the Bible’s Ten Commandments. A survey by Kelton Research found 80 percent of 1,000 respondents could name the burger’s primary ingredient -- two all-beef patties -- but less than six in 10 knew the commandment “thou shalt not kill.” Less than half of respondents -- 45 percent -- could recall the commandment “honor thy father and mother” but 62 percent knew the Big Mac has pickle. Bobby and Peter, the least recalled-names from the fictional Brady Bunch family, were remembered by 43 percent of respondents -- topping the 34 percent who knew “remember the Sabbath” and 29 percent recalling “do not make false idols.’” Americans know Big Macs better than Ten Commandments, Reuters News Service, 10/12/2007

So, have things got any better? Not at all. New studies appear to show that only a quarter to a third of all millennials feel that the Ten Commandments in general are relevant to their everyday life. Even fewer ascribe any importance at all to the first three commandments—those involving the Creator directly. This, of course, correlates with statistics showing less and less interest in religion by this generation. It is certainly most disconcerting that many see no problem with taking God’s name in vain, pursuing idols or disregarding the Sabbath, but just as ominous is the 10 percent that don’t believe “Thou shalt not kill,” is relevant to today’s world, or the 30 percent that think stealing, lying, envy and adultery are OK.

So, as we contemplate the great gift of God’s Wisdom and Providence in giving us these precepts, we must not be like the fair-weather friends to which Christ referred in today’s Gospel. “Jesus would not trust himself to them because he knew them all, and did not need anyone to testify about human nature. He himself understood it well.” We must interiorize our faith, hope and love so we do not get swept away with the secular world, as it seeks to pull us away from God.

Deacon Conrad
