STEWARDSHIP: SHARING TIME, TALENT, TREASURE, and PRAYER

“The seed sown among thorns is the one who hears the word but then the cares of the world and the lure of riches choke the word and it bears no fruit.” (Matthew 13:22)

Does the lure of riches and material goods choke God out of your life? Are you so caught up in earthly activities that you have no time for God? Gratitude and generosity are virtues that we should strive to do on a daily basis. Every decision we make either takes us one step closer to God or one step further away. What we receive at Mass every Sunday should be shared with

others all the other days of the week as well.

ANNUAL CATHOLIC APPEAL

This year’s Annual Catholic Appeal theme Because We Are Catholic emphasizes how we reach out to people in need not because they are Catholic, but because we are Catholic! The need is greater than ever in this unprecedented time. The Annual Catholic Appeal provides a great opportunity to help care for countless people of all faiths in situations of need. If you have not already done so, we encourage you to consider a gift this year. Gifts can be made online at aca.archstl.org, online through our own parish online giving at www.osvhub.com/saint-stephen-stl/funds/aca, or via pledge cards which can be mailed to or dropped off at the parish office. If you would like a pledge card but have not received a pledge card, please contact June at 314-481-1133. Thank you for your support of the annual Catholic appeal! ONLINE MASSES UPDATE

Since public Masses were suspended in March, we have been recording a private Mass on Saturday mornings to share with you online. Now that our 4 p.m. Mass is reinstated, we will be recording that vigil Mass instead. Because of the later Mass time, the recording of the weekend Mass will not be available for viewing until later on Saturday evenings. This is a temporary situation. Thanks to the generosity of a private donor who wishes to remain anonymous, we are in the process of having equipment installed which will enable us to live-stream all of our Masses with high quality. Once that is in place, all of our Masses will be available in real time and also for later viewing on our YouTube channel. Thank you for your patience!

PARISH MISSION STATEMENT

Following the example of our patron St. Stephen, we are called to be witnesses of God’s love and to be a faith-filled, reconciling parish.

PARISH PICNIC RECAP

Thank you SSP! We asked you to help support this parish and school in a different way this year and you really stepped up! We are grateful to all of you who were able to participate by purchasing a t-shirt, buying a Grand Raffle ticket, or making a monetary donation. We did not seek out our typical sponsorships, but all of you came through as virtual picnic sponsors this year. More than 180 individuals and families donated in amounts from $25 to $250 to $1,500 to $2,000! With all of your support, we were able to make this the top-grossing picnic in the last several years with a net profit of $54,359.50! On Picnic Day, Taco-Margarita Booth chairs Jim & Kristin Forgash offered to provide a taco-margarita dinner to the individual donor who made the largest donation. After all was said and done, the Forgashes agreed to provide dinners for the top TWO donors, who both wish to be unacknowledged here. Thanks, Jim & Kristin, for keeping the party going! We are so blessed and fortunate to be supported by all of you. Thank you.

Matt & Ann Marie Guntli 2020 Parish Picnic Chairs

********************** I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to our Picnic Committee for coordinating such a big success and to all members of our community who were able to contribute. This is evidence of what is possible when God mixes with his people! Peace,

********************** To the right, we thank all of the generous donors to our Parish Picnic Campaign. Many wished to remain anonymous and so are not listed here. We apologize in advance for any errors or omissions.

NEW TO THE PARISH FAMILY

Please extend a warm welcome to the newest members of our parish family — Tom & Dana Goodman and their son, Jackson.

VIRTUAL ART SHOW

You are cordially invited to visit our school's Virtual Art Show, recently installed on our website at www.saintstephenstl.org/art. Stroll through each class's gallery to get an idea of what our students were working on during the 2019-20 school year. Lots of talent on display here! Special thanks to Ms. White, Ms. Rone, Ms. Block, Ms. K., Ms. Christy, and Ms. Emily for their help in the collection of the artwork during a challenging time of distance learning.

OUR ALUMNI SHINE

Congratulations to Max Hibbeler (SSP ‘16), who graduated from St. Mary’s High School as a member of the National Honor Society on June 27. Well done, Max!

SCHOOL ENTRANCE CONSTRUCTION PROGRESS

JULY 7

Continued progress on our school-entrance construction project -- a few views of the evolving administrative assistant's office:

And as a testament to the care being taken on this project, down to the details ... These doors -- the ones that hung here when this part of the building was still our first parish church -- have been brought out of storage and returned to their original home. Below is a photo of what this part of the building looked like way back when -- the exterior church doors shown in the older photo were of a similar style but later replaced with the more-secure steel doors which hang there now.

CHECKING IN WITH OUR ANGELS

It’s been a few months since we set up our Angel Network to send cheer by mail to parishioners who may be feeling especially isolated during this time. This might be a good time to send another note or card to your special person if you haven’t done so for a while. Thank you to all who are participating!

“A SOWER WENT OUT WITH A FACE MASK”

J esus might have told this parable: “A terrible sickness struck a village. The people were terrified of getting sick and wanted to know what to do.

“The doctor asked the people to wear face masks to protect one another. We will! they all said. Some did for a while, but they found the masks uncomfortable, and it felt difficult to breathe, so they soon stopped wearing them. “The rabbi asked the people to share their food with the poor and sick. We will! they all promised. But many became more and more concerned for their own needs and that of their families, so they kept their barns and larders full — and locked. “The mayor asked the merchants to close their shops and innkeepers to close their taverns so people would not gather and spread the sickness. We will! they all agreed. They did so for a few days, but their profits dropped, and they could not pay their help, so, slowly, one by one, they quietly re-opened. “Soon, the sickness took the lives of many in the poor village. “But then there were the good folk who understood that wearing face masks protected others from the sickness, who kept their distance from one another so the sickness would not spread (even though they missed one another terribly), who readily shared what they had with those who had little. “Oh, it was very hard, and there were many days when they wanted to give up. But they persevered. “Because of them, many people did not get sick and survived. “Blessed are your eyes, because they see, and your ears, because they hear,” Jesus would have said. The parable of the sower challenges us to check the “thinness” of the soil in our hearts that results in our faith withering in the noonday heat; the “rockiness” of self-centeredness and avarice that prevents God’s “seed” of generosity and peace from taking root in us; the “thorns” of bigotry and self-righteousness that “choke” the possibility of providing for the poor, healing the broken, lifting up the fallen. Our own response to the coronavirus is a good measure of the “richness” of our faith and its potential for the “seed” of God’s Word to take root and realize in our lives the harvest of justice and compassion that is the Kingdom of God.

From Connections, June 2020

I have a little piece of my history to share. When my parents were young and having babies, with each child born they would plant some sort of shrub or greenery. My plant was a Douglas fir tree. You can see how small it started and then through the years grew to be very tall and towards its end, very sparse. I encouraged my parents to have it cut down but they hesitated and didn't want to hurt my feelings because that was always "Jane's Tree." In 2017, after my Mom was gone, I convinced my Dad to let it go. He and I sat on the porch and watched it come down. I asked the trimmers if they could please cut me a slice. I put it into the garage not knowing who at that time would build me a table. Recently, our neighbor started his own workshop (BuildSTLou). I saw some of his work and decided he was the guy I would entrust with my tree. He did not let me down. I LOVE IT! Thank you so much.
