MISSION STATEMENT
We, the Catholic faith community of St.
Teresa of Avila parish, guided by the
Holy Spirit, commit ourselves to
proclaim and follow the Good News of
Jesus Christ. Basing our lives on faith,
hope and love, we seek to meet our
needs and the spiritual and corporal
needs of those around us. It is our
humble prayer that our lives will be
visible signs of His presence in the
world as we celebrate Christ in His
Word and Sacraments.

ST. TERESA OF AVILA CATHOLIC CHURCH AKRON, NEW YORK
Dear Parishioners, I hope 2017 begins with blessings for you! 2016 sure ended great with endless family
parties and visits from out-of-town friends. Despite my very public position, I'm an introvert by nature. After the very intense and sociable holiday weeks, I need to get away to a cabin and be alone with a stack of books. I will do so this week and return late Friday. Msgr. Williamson will be here for the 5:30 P.M. Mass on Wednesday the 18th. Drop in for Mass after work and say hello!
An unexpected treat since coming to Akron has been Cipollina's. They catered our March Mission and it's been a great place to take visiting friends. I even stopped in for a jazz night to hear Laurie Mozee sing. Laurie, as you know, is a very active person stretched in many directions. In addition to music ministry here, she plays weekly at the Buffalo Club, and owns & operates Cipollina's and the iconic Guy's Subs. Cipollina has become so popular that they've expanded their hours to Sunday.
Now that Cipollina is open on Sundays, Laurie has asked if she could reduce her parish ministry a bit. She will still continue as music director, but will step down as choir director. This means she'll play the Saturday 4:30 and Sunday 8:00 Masses as usual, but will not usually be at the 10:15. I'll miss Laurie's vivacity and joyful spirit at that Mass, and I know you will too. After 20 years, her voice is comfortable and familiar.
What will we do for the 10:15 Mass? I believe God has blessed us by sending a voice that is also familiar if you've been to Mass at Oakfield or Elba. Marilyn Boyd was full-time musician and choir director at St. Padre Pio until recently. She has since joined our parish and been a Bible Study group leader as well as Eucharistic Minister. I'm very pleased that Marilyn has agreed to lead our choir.
There is, of course, no way to 'replace' Laurie Mozee. Her spirit is one-of-a-kind. But I consider it a grace from God that He sent us an accomplished musician who lives in the neighborhood and knows the culture of our town. I know you'll find Marilyn to be energetic and fun to sing along with.
There will be a different sound drifting down from the choir loft, as Marilyn's primary instrument is the guitar. This will work well for the young 10:15 congregation.
I cannot thank Laurie enough for her decades of leadership, and I'm thankful she'll still be with us for two out of three Masses. I also know that a fine restaurant like Cipollina has long been a dream for Laurie, and now that dream is coming true. I'm glad she can live that dream and still keep a presence in our parish.
Laurie's last 10:15 Mass will be next weekend, January 22nd, although she will certainly be back to fill in from time to time. Remember, too, that you can always catch her at the 4:30 and 8:00 Masses. Marilyn will begin leading our choir on January 29th.
I'm sorry to begin the new year with this announcement. These aren’t the kind of changes a new pastor ordinarily makes, but Laurie wants to do her best at everything she does, and feels that this change will allow her to give us the energy level we're used to hearing from her. In her honor, let's ring the rafters of the church with our singing at every Mass of the new year! God is so deserving of
our highest worship! ~ Fr . Dave

THE 2ND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME * JANUARY 15, 2017
Our Special Prayer Request for the Week: For an end to senseless violence and the protection of all innocents; let us pray to the Lord…
Please pray for the sick of the parish and their family members particularly; David Hahn, Shirley Lantz, Lucas Lowe, Noah Schubbe, Michael Nanni, Jim Schmatz, June
Hoffman, Keith Bergman, Lorraine Sylvester, Madisyn Ross, Norma Hackbush, Arlene Scheeda, Adolph Bassanello, Lawrence Geary and Bryan Weber. Please also continue to pray for our troops who are serving our country in Iraq, Afghanistan and throughout the world.
A Personal Invitation for Father Dave: Laurie’s news (see previous page) reminds me to invite you to join our Sunday choir. There is lots of room in our choir loft, and we're always looking to fill out the ensemble. According to Laurie, if you like singing but are a little bashful, the choir is the best place to be! Your voice will blend right in with the others and you can sing your heart out with no one to turn around and stare. A great voice is not a requirement. All voices sound good when blended in a large choir. If you have a song in your heart, just come up to the choir loft after the 10:15 Mass and join us for practice. As with most choirs, male voices are particularly in need.
Respect Life: In observance of the 44th Anniversary of the Supreme Court decision in Roe v. Wade, legalizing
abortion, Roses for Life, Precious Hands and Precious Feet lapel pins will be available after all Masses next weekend. All proceeds will be forwarded to the Diocese of Buffalo Pro-Life Activities Office. We thank you for your support.
Religious Education: Classes are held every Sunday morning, that is, from January 15th thru February 12th. We have February 19th off for the beginning of President’s Week and resume classes on February 26th. Displaying the Christmas stable with its significant figures is a tradition among Catholic families. It is disappointing to find that some of our children do not have one in their homes. If you can share one with other family members please do so!
High School Teens *Sunday, January 22nd, 6-8 pm: monthly gathering in the Parish Hall *March 3rd-5th -- This winter the Department of Youth and Young Adult Ministry will hold the 65th Annual Diocesan Youth Convention, “Positively Dangerous”, at the Adam's Mark Hotel, downtown Buffalo. This inspiring weekend will bring together over 800 high school aged youth and their adult leaders for 3 days of prayer, faith, evangelization and community service. For more information, contact Father Dave.
A man went to the Police Station wishing to speak with the burglar who had broken into his house the night before. "You'll
get your chance in court." said the Desk Sergeant. "No, no no!" said the man. "I want to know how he got into the house without waking my wife. I've been trying to do that for years!"

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK:
