ST. TERESA OF AVILA CATHOLIC CHURCH AKRON, NEW YORK

Happy Fourth Sunday of Easter! It's also Mothers Day, and I warmly greet the mothers of our parish on this special Sunday. I hope someone is taking

good care of you today. In the same way we honor Jesus' mother with the annual May

Crowning this weekend. As mothers, you spend a lot of time praying for your children. This is precisely what Mary is doing for us, standing by the throne of her Divine Son.

If you're here today with Mom but are usually away from the Sacraments, you can always jump right back in to a devout life of faith. Jesus made it easy for us! A quick confession is all you need to get back in the state of grace. It'll be like you never left!

Family and faith are the centerpiece of Mothers Day. I'm going to say the same thing about the movie everyone is talking about, A Quiet Place. It's a story of family survival in impossible conditions. I'm sure you know that a sequel will be filmed here in July.

Bishop Robert Barron reviewed the film on his youtube channel. He saw it on vacation just for a fun night out, but was surprised to find themes of family and faith. He calls it "the most unexpectedly religious film of the year."

Please don't take that out of context. Bishop Barron is not saying it's a religious movie, nor family-friendly. It's a post-apocalyptic thriller with bleak and brutal moments. But at the center of the plot is a traditional family that actually prays on screen, and a subtle pro-life message. I hope that the sequel will continue these themes.

Please note: due to the unpredictability this project will bring to our community, we've moved our Vacation Bible School up a week. The new dates are July 8-12. Please update your calendars. Our theme is "Roar! Life is Wild; God is Good!" and we look forward to a very fun week for the young kids.

Speaking of the children, you are invited to our parish First Communion, this Saturday the 18th, at 10:00 am.

For today, enjoy your Mothers Day gathering! You may wish to attend the Knights of Columbus pancake breakfast at Our Lady of Peace, which was a big hit last year. Details are on the next page. Let us give thanks for family and the gift of life, as we continue to celebrate the Resurrection of Jesus.

~Father Dave

Our Prayer Request for the Week: For all mothers, living and deceased; we pray to the Lord…

Doug Schifferle, Crystal Howard, Leah Howard, Whitey Spoth, Gloria Rembas, Geraldine Benker, Eileen Tiedt, Marygrace Marinello. Please also continue to pray for our troops who are serving our country throughout the world.

May is the Month of Mary, Mother of Jesus. We will be saying the rosary before each weekday Mass, including

Saturday morning. Please arrive about 15 minutes before Mass starts and join us.

FOURTH SUNDAY OF EASTER * MAY 12, 2019

Religious Education: Learning a prayer by heart will help you and your child in many ways. It gives your child a sense of connection to those who share your faith and it can be comforting to recite when your child wants to pray but feels at a loss for words, a tradition the two of you share forever. Parents and children in our third grade have been sharing special stories from Scripture and praying together at Mass in anticipation and preparation for First Holy Communion. This special parish event takes place next Saturday, May 18th at 10 am. Let us support these families with our prayers also.

Youth Ministry Upcoming Events: High School: Sunday, May 19th - 6:00 - 8:00 pm - “Weird Relay Races”. Come compete against other teams in weird relays that will test your cooperation skills, speed, agility and knowledge.

Our Knights of Columbus, Council No. 13661, invite you to their annual Mother’s Day Pancake Breakfast featuring pancakes from Break N Eggs Creperie, eggs from Krehers, plus

sausage, sweets, coffee, etc. TODAY from 8:30 am until noon at Our Lady of Peace Church, 10950 Main Street, Clarence. A Free will offering will be taken.

Catholic Charities can be a light at the end of the tunnel. If you have a child ages 12-17 who is displaying

chronic behaviors such as noncompliance, verbal and/or physical aggression, truancy, school failure, not following curfew, running away, illegal substance abuse and/or criminal activity consider our Multisystemic Therapy Program in Erie and Niagara counties. MST is an intensive, family-focused intervention provided in the natural environment of the youth. Interventions are research-based and the program offers 24/7 availability. For more information, call 716-204-0555, ext. 330 or visit www.ccwny.org. Appeal 2019 is still ongoing. Please make your pledge or donation at your earliest convenience.

God-given wellness through Prayer, Food, Song and Essential Oils: Monday, May 13th at 7:00 pm at Our Lady of Pompeii Parish Ministry Center, 158 Laverack Avenue, Lancaster. Join us for healthy foods, prayer and worship led by Carrie Ford and Tammy Stanek, RN, followed by a presentation highlighting Bible Oils and the connection between God’s plan for our lives and how we care for our bodies. Bring a healthy dish, snack or drink to share at 6:30 pm, presentation at 7:00 pm. All are welcome!

The pastor was invited over for dinner and asked to lead in prayer for the meal. After a brief prayer, little Johnny looked at the

pastor and said, “You don’t pray so long when you’re hungry do you?”

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK:

“A mother’s happiness is like a

beacon, lighting up the future, but

reflected also in the past in the

guise of fond memories.”
