ST. TERESA OF AVILA CATHOLIC CHURCH AKRON, NEW YORK

When we last left our hero, he was standing in the arena of Athens, delivering a brilliant speech

to the people of Greece... and getting no results at all. Isn't life like that sometimes? That hero is St. Paul, and he wasn't always successful - but he never gave up.

Our Bible Study resumes this fall, picking up Paul's story in Chapter 18 of Acts of the Apostles. We have only six sessions remaining to finish the book, and I've just set the dates. We'll wait until after Columbus Day to begin, so our first class will be Monday, October 15th. That happens to be a special day - the feast day of St. Teresa of Avila! This schedule will complete the entire study on the Monday before Thanksgiving.

If anyone would like to jump in to the Bible Study, please do! The model we use allows people to start and stop anywhere, and still come away with a deeper knowledge and affection for God's Holy Word. Just give me a call at the rectory to register.

Our Bible study resources come from Ascension Press, a company started by Jeff Cavins. They've just announced that they're printing a new Bible which uses the 12-color coding system from the Bible Timeline study (which we did back in 2016). It looks beautiful, and I was very excited about it until I saw the price point, $60. Yikes! But, if you really liked the color-coded timeline, you may want to check out the preview in the online shop at ascensionpress.com

Although I'm talking about books, young children fear not! You still have a whole week and a half of freedom before summer vacation ends. I always say: imagine if someone gave you a week off in the middle of the school year, and how thrilled you'd be. That's the way to enjoy this final week of fun.

College students, however, your time is up. It's a rule of life that the older you get, the shorter your summers are. But you have the excitement of a larger world of new friends and big ideas! Godspeed to all our returning or beginning collegiates. We'll hold down the fort for you here at home.

Blessed be God forever, - Fr. Dave

Our Prayer Request for the Week: For fair weather and safe fun in these last weeks of summer; we pray to the Lord…

Jim Creed, Liam Williams, Doug Schifferle, Crystal Howard, Leah Howard, Karen Martin, Jess Reger, Elizabeth Russo, Christopher Ginestre, Whitey Spoth, Arlene Scheeda, Connie Philips, Jack Powell, Jim Bradley, Gloria Rembas and for the happy repose of the soul of John Gehl and Mary Lou Bummer. Please also continue to pray for our troops who are serving our country throughout the world.

Prayer for Vocations

God our Father, we thank you for calling men and women to serve in your Son’s Kingdom as sisters, brothers, and religious priests. Renew their knowledge and love of you, and send your Holy Spirit to he lp them respond generously and courageously to your will. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. After Jesus explained that His flesh and blood are true food and drink, by which eternal life is afforded all who eat and believe, there were many disciples who refused to believe and returned to their former ways of life. How is God asking you to bring reconciliation to those who have lost sight of His Eucharist? If God is calling you to a Church vocation, call Father Andrew Lauricella at 716-847-5535. You can also check out the “Priest of the Month” stories on their website at www.buffalovocations.org!

Religious Education: Classes Resume Sunday, September 9th! If you have children beginning Kindergarten this fall, remember to register them for Sunday morning Religious Education. Our excellent program welcomes children from Kindergarten thru high school. The children are prepared for the sacraments prayerfully and thoroughly with the parent included and prepared along with the child: First Confession in second grade, First Communion in third grade, and Confirmation in eleventh grade. Read more on the parish website or give Sister Ruth a call at 542-5777 or 542-9717.

Milk and Porridge Project for Mission in Timau, Kenya - The monies collected earlier this summer as well as the contributions from the children at St. Teresa’s Vacation Bible School are being used to feed over 20 babies and toddlers for a year in Timau. Mothers come every 2 weeks to receive the porridge mixture as well as fruit and vegetables. At that time the babies are weighed and measured so that growth charts can be kept. Milk is supplied to the mothers from a farm closest to their home so that each child receives a pint a day. Sister Joanne says she can see that the program is helping already after just a few weeks. She has sent pictures which will be on display in the back of Church this weekend. As always, Sister Joanne thanks all of you for your generosity.

A man goes into a bar and admires the stuffed lion’s head mounted on the wall. “What a great trophy,” says the man to the

bartender. “I wouldn’t call it great,” replies the bartender. “That lion killed my wife!” “Good heavens,” says the man, “were you on safari?” “No,” replies the bartender. “The screws came loose and it fell on her head.”
