ST. TERESA OF AVILA CATHOLIC CHURCH AKRON, NEW YORK

This week we welcome our new pastor, Father David Baker!

Father David Baker was ordained a Catholic priest on May 19, 2007. He is a second-career vocation to the priesthood. He first studied mechanical engineering and worked at Cooper Turbocompressor, in Buffalo. He then

spent two years as a computer network administrator at the University at Buffalo, which included supercomputer work for UB’s Center for Computational Research. Feeling drawn somehow to help the Diocese of Buffalo, he first inquired about the possibility of working for the diocese in the field of computers but there were no jobs available in that area. God had a different kind of involvement in mind for Father David. So he switched from the study of Physics to the study of Metaphysics. In the seminary, he learned philosophy, languages, music history, and, of course, Scripture and theology. Celebrating Mass, preaching, and administering the Sacraments are, for Father Baker, the best parts of being a priest. When people receive the sacraments from him, they take those graces and blessings which flow from God, through him, to them, out into the whole world. He had been stationed at Queen of Heaven in West Seneca, Our Lady of Victory National Shrine and Basilica in Lackawanna, St. Amelia Parish in Tonawanda, NY and will join us on Wednesday, January 13.

Our Special Prayer Intention this Week: That our parish will experience a deepening spirituality and sacramental dedication under the guidance of our new pastor, Father David Baker; we pray to the Lord…

Please pray for the sick of the parish and their family members particularly; David Hahn, Joan Piechocki, Paul Coleman, Shirley Lantz, Philip Morris, Donald

Little, Lucas Lowe, Laurie Puffpaf, Mary Prentice and for the happy repose of the soul of Joseph Nicosia and Richard Kasperek. Please also continue to pray for our troops who are serving in the military in Afghanistan, Iraq and around the world.

Religious Education: Did you know that our second graders have been preparing to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation? Their parents share a big part of this as primary educators of their children. It is so important for our faith development to come to Mass. Children and parents are strongly encouraged to attend Mass on Sunday because the Eucharistic liturgy offers a wealth of what the Christian life is all about. The Eucharist nourishes us in Word and Sacrament. Over time it becomes a part of us and we begin to realize where we belong and to whom we belong.

Prayer For Priests and Religious

God our Father, we thank you for calling men and women to serve in your Son’s Kingdom as priests, deacons, and women religious. Send your Holy Spirit to help us respond generously and courageously to your call. May our community of faith support vocations of sacrificial love in our youth. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Christ gives us the gift of Baptism, through which we each have a vocation in the Church. Pray for those who are discerning a call to live their baptismal commitment as religious priests and sisters.

THE BAPTISM OF THE LORD * JANUARY 10, 2016

We are now in the Ordinary Time of the Liturgical Year—Ordinary Time begins on Monday, January 11, and continues through Tuesday, February 9, the day before Ash Wednesday and the beginning of the Lenten season. It will resume when the Easter season ends, that is, on Monday, May 16, the day following Pentecost. “Besides the times of the year that have their own distinctive character, there remains in the yearly cycle thirty-three or thirty-four weeks in which no particular aspect of the mystery of Christ is celebrated, but rather the mystery of Christ itself is honored in its fullness, especially on Sundays. This period is known as Ordinary Time.”

A huge thanks to all the parishioners who contributed to the Retirement Fund for Religious. Our parish raised $7247.00.

Find Good Within. Open hearts follow Jesus’ lead. Appeal Patron St. Nicholas had a strong concern for justice, especially innocent victims. He was chosen as the guardian of many cities, churches and most notably, children. St. Nicholas had a strong reputation as the brings of gifts and was admired for his generosity. Join us in “finding good within” serving tens of thousands of our neighbors in need in Jesus’ name. Please support the 2016 Appeal. For more information, call 716-218-1400 or check out their website at www.ccwny.org.

Do you feel God is calling you to be a Permanent Deacon? 135 men had this same feeling and are now serving as deacons in our diocese. If you are feeling this desire, God may be calling you to find out more about the Permanent Diaconate! The diocese is currently forming an Inquiry Class for Fall 2016 and attendance at an informational session is required to apply. Information sessions are scheduled for the following dates at Christ the King Seminary, 711 Knox Road, East Aurora: Saturday, March 5 at 9 am, Saturday, April 2 at 9 am, and Saturday, April 30 at 9 am. Attendance at an information session is required for both the interested man and his wife to be considered for the inquiry class. Contact Deacon Rick Stachura at 716-542-4233 or [email protected] to register or for further information.

Nativity of Mary School in Harris Hill invites you to an Open House on Sunday, January 31st from 10:30 - 1:30 to see what Nativity has to offer! Tour the school, meet the faculty and staff and chat with parents. For more information, call Courtney Frisch at 716-633-7441, ext. 317.

St. Joseph School in Batavia also invites you to their Open House on Sunday, January 31st. Open house begins at 10 am, followed by a celebration Mass at 11:30 and then a luncheon reception at the school. All are welcome. For more information, call Mrs. Karen Green at 585-343-6154.

A local pastor joined a community service club, and the members thought they would have some fun with him. Under his name on

the badge they printed “Hog Caller” as his occupation. Everyone made a big fanfare as the badge was presented. The pastor responded by saying, “I usually am called the ‘Shepherd of the Sheep’ . . .but you know your people better than I do.”

The Lord richly blessed all who call on Him.
