RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD

Today’s readings invite us into prayer, into rela-tionship with God. Because relationships feel more natural when we know one another well, Sirach encourages us to know God better. In his wisdom, Sirach tells us what God is like: fair, open-minded, compassionate, and attentive. “The Lord will not delay,” he says. Knowing that God’s help comes right on time, whenever we need it, calms our hearts and helps us trust the Lord. In his second Letter to Timothy, Saint Paul demonstrates his own trust in God. Despite the grueling struggles Saint Paul has faced because of his Christian faith, he praises the Lord for rescuing him time and again. Today’s Gospel draws us close to Jesus too, revealing his special love for the poor and humble. As Jesus tells his parable about the prayer habits of a Pharisee and a tax collector, our hearts long to become as gentle as Christ’s.

PRAYER GROUP

We will have the Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament on Friday, No-vember 1st, from 9:30am to 5pm. Please come and join us for Adora-tion on this First Friday. We invite you to sign up for an hour of adora-tion. The sign-up sheet is on the

parish bulletin board in the church hall. Please consider signing up for an hour to ensure we have every hour covered, and hopefully more than one person per hour can come. On November 1st we will be celebrating mass at 9am and 5:30pm in celebration of All Saints Day. We will not have a mass at 12pm.

40 DAYS FOR LIFE

All Saints' Day is a solemn holy day in the Catholic Church celebrated annually on November 1st. The day is dedicated to the saints of the Church, that is, all those who have attained heaven. It should not be confused with All Souls' Day, which is observed on November 2nd, and is dedicated to those who have died and not yet reached heaven. All Saints' Day is a Catholic Holy Day of Obligation, meaning all Catholics are required to attend Mass on that day, unless they have an excellent excuse, such as serious illness. On November 2nd we celebrate the faithful departed, best known as All Souls which reminds us the living to pray for the departed that they may rise again as promised by Jesus to his followers. All Souls Day is not a Holy Day of Obligation, but we dedicate the month of November to pray for all the departed. To celebrate All Saints we will have a vigil mass on Thursday, October 31st at 7pm and mass on Friday, November 1st at 9:00am and 5:30pm.

En la Iglesia de Santo Tomás tene-mos la Adoración del Santísimo Sa-cramento el viernes 1ro de noviembre de 9:30am a 5pm. El Santísimo Sa-cramento estará expuesto en la custo-dia en el altar para Adoración y ora-ción. Por favor venga y acompáñenos

para la Adoración en este primer viernes. Invita-mos que personas se registren para una Hora Santa. La hoja de inscripción está en el tablero de anuncios en el salón de la iglesia. Considere inscribirse durante una hora para asegurarse de que tengamos por lo menos un adorador por ho-ra, y si es posible más de una persona por hora.

Las lecturas de hoy nos invitan a la oración, hacia una relación con Dios. Pues las relaciones se sienten más naturales cuando conocemos mejor uno con el otro. El libro del Eclesiástico nos ani-ma a conocer mejor a Dios. En su sabiduría, este libro nos dice cómo es Dios, justo, de mente abierta, compasivo y atento. “El Señor no tarda” dice. Sabiendo que la ayuda de Dios llega en el debido momento, donde sea que la necesitemos, calma nuestros corazones y nos ayuda a confiar en el Señor. En la segunda carta a Timoteo, san Pablo demuestra su propia confianza en Dios. A pesar de las luchas agotadoras que san Pablo ha enfrentado a causa de su fe cristiana, él alaba al Señor por haberlo rescatarlo una y otra vez. El Evangelio de hoy nos acerca también a Jesús, re-velando su especial amor por los pobres y humildes. Cuando Jesús cuenta la parábola acerca de las formas como los fariseos y recolectores de impuestos rezan, nuestros corazones se convierten tan gentiles como los de Cristo.

GRUPO DE ORACIÓN

El Día de Todos los Santos es un día sagrado so-lemne en la Iglesia Católica que se celebra anual-mente el 1 de noviembre. El día está dedicado a los santos de la Iglesia, es decir, a todos los que han alcanzado el cielo. No debe confundirse con el Día de los Fieles Difuntos, que se observa el 2 de noviembre, y está dedicado a aquellos que han muerto y aún no han llegado al cielo. El Día de Todos los Santos es un Día Santo Católico de Obligación, lo que significa que todos los católi-cos deben asistir a Misa ese día, a menos que tengan una excusa, como una enfermedad grave. El 2 de noviembre celebramos a los fieles difun-tos, que nos recuerda a los vivos rezar por los difuntos para que puedan resucitar según lo pro-metido por Jesús a sus seguidores. El Dia de los Fieles Difuntos no es un día de obligación para los católicos, mas bien dedicamos todo el mes de noviembre para hacer nuestras suplicas a Dios por nuestros seres queridos que hay fallecido y que no han llegado a la presencia de Dios. Jesus addressed this parable to those who were convinced of their own righteousness and despised everyone else. "Two people went up to the temple area to pray; one was a Pharisee and the other was a tax collector. The Pharisee took up his position and spoke this prayer to himself, 'O God, I thank you that I am not like the rest of human-ity -- greedy, dishonest, adulterous -- or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week, and I pay tithes on my whole income.' But the tax collector stood off at a distance and would not even raise his eyes to heaven but beat his breast and prayed, 'O God, be merciful to me a sinner.' I tell you, the latter went home justified, not the former; for whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and the one who humbles himself will be exalted."

El fariseo, erguido, oraba así en su interior: 'Dios mío, te doy gracias porque no soy como los demás hombres: ladrones, injustos y adúlteros; tam-poco soy como ese publicano. Ayuno dos veces por semana y pago el diezmo de todas mis ga-nancias'. El publicano, en cambio, se quedó lejos y no se atrevía a levantar los ojos al cielo.
