10 QUESTIONS

with America’s Got Talent Winner

Michael Grimm4

. . . as a contestant on season five of NBC’s popular America’s Got Talent.

Parlaying his substantial singer-songwriter appeal into a first-place finish, Michael took home the $1 million prize and headlined the first-ever national America’s Got Talent Tour. Following that, he toured with the legendary Stevie Nicks and Heart, playing to arenas of 20,000 cheering fans.

Michael Grimm’s fairy tale strikes a chord in the American soul, evoking stories of struggle and simple men re- building what nature has swept away.

When hurricane Katrina struck and a tidal surge decimated his grandparents’ home in Waveland, Mississippi, all Michael wanted to do was find a way to help them.

The boy who grew up singing in a local club for coins tossed into a tip jar found his way to Hollywood where he auditioned for America’s Got Talent. The rest, as they say, is history.

Q. TELL US ABOUT GROWING UP WITH YOUR GRANDPARENTS AND MOVING TO MISSISSIPPI.I was raised by my grandparents. When I was five, and my sister was three, my mom and dad were divorced and going through hard times. We were going to be taken by welfare and my grandmother wasn’t going to allow it. She took custody of my sister and me.

Growing up, watching her play piano, going to Baptist church in a very strict Southern Baptist family, she inspired me. She played piano the way her mother taught her how to play; not knowing what a note or a key or a chord is. I was always inspired by that.

My sister and I would get up next to her in church and sing Baptist

hymns, and my grandmother heard me sing and said, “Son, you’re going to be a star one day.”

Without her support, I would not be doing the music I wanted to do. I wanted to go and break bottles and be a menace, but she didn’t allow

me to do those things. She was very strict, and she supported that one thing, you know—the music business.

Q. YOU GREW UP SINGING COUNTRY AND THEN DISCOVERED SOUL AND THE BLUES IN YOUR MID-TEENS.Yes. I started with old country that my grandparents raised me on — Ernest Tubb and George Jones. I went on to Aretha Franklin, Otis Redding and New Orleans music. It was always there around me, the Mardi Gras music, that New Orleans funk.

If you go up the Mississippi River a little bit to Memphis, you’ll run into that Memphis sound and Otis Redding and Arthur Conway and all those guys.

I was just hearing it everywhere from country to soul to blues. I grew up eating it for breakfast, lunch, and dinner every day.

All I needed was a heartache to make that transition. I don’t want to make it sound like country music is

not heartbroken. Believe me; country was definitely helping me through a lot of those heartaches.

Q. DIDN’T YOU GET A CHANCE TO START PLAYING FOR LEGENDS IN CONCERT ?

I worked for Legends in Concert in Biloxi as a lead guitarist and only did backup vocal work. I never worked as a vocalist.

I wound up getting a bit of a reputation at Legends in Concert and moved to Las Vegas. For a little over a decade I worked for Legends as a guitarist, putting bands together for other shows, and working as a musical director.

Q. WHAT MADE YOU WANT TO GO FOR AMERICA’S GOT TALENT?First it was Hurricane Katrina and helping my grandparents. Also, I was getting older, and had fought to be recognized in the music business. But, the record companies wanted pop groups, not someone who sounded like me.

I had to keep going. I couldn’t give up. So what do you do? You just try another option, and America’s Got Talent was it.

I wasn’t going to go back to the record labels and beg them or ask

‘‘ My grandmother HEARD ME sing and said, ‘Son, YOU’RE GOING TO BE A STAR one day.’’’

5

Page 6: StagePass Sep/Oct 2013

them for deals. They’ve offered me deals with great costs.

And with the costs came a change in my character and who I am, and I’m not going to do that. Sorry. That’s not what being a musician and real artist is about. It is not about changing and conforming to what the labels want you to be.

So that’s what got me interest-ed in the show.

Q. WHAT IS THAT LIKE AT THE AMERICA’S GOT TALENT MASS AUDITION?Lots of people there . . . it looked like thousands. I go in, do my part after waiting for hours. And they said,

“Okay. We’ll call you.” And the only call I got back that year was, “We lost your tape” or something.

Bill Medley of The Righteous Brothers said, “Well, come on out on tour and play guitar with me, and do some vocal work with me and my daughter.” While I was on the road with him in Florida a year later, America’s Got Talent called saying, “can you be in Hollywood tomorrow?”

I went to Bill and said, “Look, they want me in Hollywood.” And he said, “Go.” I flew out to Hollywood thinking they were going to tell me it was in front of pre-judges, but instead, I went right out on stage in front of the judges we all see on TV—that episode everyone first saw me on.

Q. WHAT HAPPENED WHEN YOU FIRST WALKED OUT ON STAGE?Well, I let them know I lived in Las Vegas. I’m from Mississippi originally, but they made it sound like I just hitched a freight train. I guess it sounds okay, but it’s not really the truth.

Walking out there, you feel like Amateur Night at the Apollo. People are screaming and yelling at you, telling you to get off the stage. It’s enough to intimidate someone a lot. But I’ve got a lot of years of experi-ence with people yelling at me.

I was very, very heartbroken at the time, depressed about my life and where I was going.

My grandparents lost their house, and I didn’t know what to do for them. So I really put all that emotion into that song.

I survived that first round, but the judges kept wanting me to change things about myself. And Sharon Osbourne seemed to have a problem with my hat.

6

Page 7: StagePass Sep/Oct 2013

Q. I LOVE HOW YOU CAME BACK ON ONE OF THEM. WHAT WAS THE SONG? “LEAVE YOUR HAT ON”?Well, yeah. I beat them to the chase. I went ahead and took the hat off, did a whole episode without it. I had them mess up my hair real corny looking so people would go, “God, Michael, I didn’t know your ears stuck out like that. Now I know why you wear a hat.”

Luckily, I made it through that round. Thankfully, people were hearing with their ears and not their eyes because I bet I would’ve lost that episode.

Really, the hat is just there to say, “I’m not going to change for anybody out there. This hat is me.” And it came back on with the next performance which was “Leave Your Hat On.”

In the end, after winning, Sharon gave me a hat because she always was telling me to take the hat off but when I won, she gave me a box. And I opened it up, and there was a little fedora in there. It was very nice.

Q. WHEN YOU WERE DOING YOUR WINNING PERFORMANCE OF “WHEN A MAN LOVES A WOMAN,” DID YOU HAVE A PARTICULAR WOMAN IN MIND?I dedicated it to my fiancée, Lucie. I knew after that show, it was the right moment to ask her to marry me.

She always said, “I don’t care where we get married or who marries us . . . Just propose to me the right way, or you’re going to have to do it again.”

So after I won the show, I proposed to her on the The Ellen DeGeneres Show. How can you do a better proposal than on national TV?

Lucie inspires me; she comes from Europe and she doesn’t have any limitations. Anything’s possible.

Coming from a communist situation, democracy and liberty is something that she values very much. So I live vicariously through her. That’s why I married her.

Q. WHAT’S HAPPENED SINCE AMERICA’S GOT TALENT? After the show I went out on tour with Stevie Nicks. I promoted the album. I was constantly going, going, going the first two years after the show.

I gave all the money away immediately by making sure I

‘‘ I COULDN’T GIVE UP. So what do you do? You just try another option, and AMERICA’S GOT TALENT WAS IT.’’

7

Page 8: StagePass Sep/Oct 2013

bought the house first for my grandparents. I spent some money on the wedding. I finally bought myself a truck and the rest I gave away to all my friends.

I needed a little break, and that’s

kind of where I’ve been at recently, just relaxing, working on the album, taking a breather, just doing gigs here and there.

Q. AT YOUR CORE, YOU’RE MORE THAN A MUSICIAN, YOU’RE AN ARTIST. DIDN’T YOU DO THE COVER ART ON YOUR ALBUM GUMBO?Yeah. That’s a hobby. On that Gumbo album, it’s little character drawings of the guys that did the album with me.

I do like to create art and even inventions. You know, I’m sitting right now in front of a little hydrogen cell motor – a little cylinder that I’ve invented. I’m trying to get the hydrogen to break free from the water, so I don’t know if I can do that.

So physics and all that is my hobby. I live for that stuff when I’m not doing music.

If you think about it, music is just that; it’s physics; it’s studying the vibrations of the length of the string,

and that also goes for color. And we all know color is vibration, right? For every note, there is a matching color. The whole universe is nothing but a big mass of small vibrations everywhere inside of little atoms.

Q. SO TELL ME ABOUT THE SHOW YOU’RE TOURING; GRIMM’S FAIRY TALE. WHAT SHOULD PEOPLE EXPECT? This is my life experience. I am a singer and a musician, and I write songs, and I like to connect with the people when they come out to see me. So really, this is my fairy tale. It’s my life through song. It’s going to be story telling.

It’s going to be connecting with the audience, even going out into the audience if the stage allows. I’ll sit there in front of the stage and do requests at the moment, that sort of thing, and have a good time and rock the house.

We’ve got a bus, but that’s about the only luxury we’re going to have on this adventure. The band I’m carrying with me is a four piece, plus me. So that’d be five pieces.

You’ve seen me with my horn section; when you take that big of a band on the road, it winds up being a whole lot of money. I need to know that I can put butts in the seats before I start bringing brass.

The whole goal is to start it off from scratch, not getting funding from anyone. You start from scratch and let it build its own thing.

The new album that I’m working on will be called Fairy Tales, and that’ll be part of the tour.

I’m calling it the “Fairy Tale Project” because the album’s not going to be complete until the tour is done. I’ll do a whole DVD with it.

8

Page 9: StagePass Sep/Oct 2013

And then once the tour is done, we’re going to go back out on another chapter of the Fairy Tales and then do another album.

Q. DO YOU HAVE A LOT OF FANS WHO WANT TO GIVE YOU HATS?Believe it or not, no. A lot of fans want my hat. In fact, I have my own little line of hats that I’ve come out with, and I sell them at the gigs. They’re fedoras, and they have my name and my logo, and on the inside it says, “You can leave your hat on.”

You can see Michael Grimm perform

FLY HIGH11

Page 12: StagePass Sep/Oct 2013

When most people think about flying, they expect wings. In theater, at major events, and arena concert venues, they expect people in kilts.

Flying directors who wear kilts are a trademark of the internationally renowned flying effects company, ZFX. So are breathtaking moments where performers suddenly take flight.

If you’ve seen the spectacular “Defying Gravity” in the Broadway sensation Wicked, or Cathy Rigby sailing through the bedroom window in Peter Pan, or the chandelier crashing to the stage in the Las Vegas production of Phantom of the

Opera, you’ve seen ZFX at work.Unlike the movies — where

special effects are computer gen-erated — live flying effects need to happen in real time right in front of the audience.

Recently the rapper 50 Cent wanted to make a grand entrance in a performance at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. The flying directors at ZFX arranged for him to float down 80 feet into the center of the stage to roars of thunderous approval from the fans.

Creating unique flying effects takes a blend of theatrical know-how, engineering, and a little bit of

magic. The goal of using flying in any show is to create a “wow” moment that the audience will remember.

“We all enjoy the moment when Peter Pan first flies through the window, or when Miss Gulch flies across the stage on the bicycle in The Wizard of OZ. Those are the moments when the audience really commits to the show,” said Sandy Harned, ZFX production director.

“You hear it. Everybody gasps and you say to yourself, ‘Got ‘em! They’re in!’ ”

Incorporating flying effects in a show doesn’t happen overnight. El Dorado Musical Theatre first began

Opening Photo: Performance from De vrienden van Amstel LIVE in the Netherlands had terrific impact with its audience. This Page: Countless hours of testing and development go into the flying equipment and techniques to assure performer safety .

Page 13: StagePass Sep/Oct 2013

planning meetings with ZFX in May for their production of Peter Pan which opens in early November.

Some productions such as Disney’s Mary Poppins or Tarzan require developing special harnesses and rigs to get the ideal on-stage effect. That requires even more de-velopment time and engineering to get it just right.

And, only then does the chal-lenge of making it work in front of an audience begin.

In the upcoming production of Peter Pan, the ZFX flying director and their production team will arrive with the sets as EDMT moves into the theater about a week before opening.

The first phase will be to work with the Harris Center technical team to get all of the rigging set correctly above the stage. Each line needs to work with the placement of the set pieces so the performers can take off and land in the correct spots.

Next comes some intense training of the operators who will provide the muscle and actually “fly” the performers in the air during the shows. It often takes an entire team of operators to fly a single performer.

In the scene where Peter Pan, Wendy, John, and Michael are flying to Neverland, there is a small army of operators offstage coordinating the flight.

ZFX has one of the largest flying-training dojos in the world. Here, a student from

Washington and Lee University begins to master the craft of flying.

13

Page 14: StagePass Sep/Oct 2013

Many of these operators are the fathers of performers in the show. The “Fly Dads” as they are called, take a great deal of pride and care in their task. In some cases, “Fly Dads” come back to help with subsequent productions, even if their child is not in the show.

The next challenge for the ZFX flying director is to teach the performers the fine points of flying. There are special training sessions where performers and operators work together to get everything coordinated.

A high degree of confidence and trust is required for a performer to

allow themselves to be launched skyward and sail across a stage. To do that while singing and staying in character is even more of a challenge.

“Sometimes during rehearsal a performer who has never had a problem with heights suddenly does,” said Harned. “That’s when the flying director has to become 40% motivational speaker, 30% therapist, and 30% diva wrangler.”

“That’s one of the things that I’ve learned being a flying director. You can plan things and have everything laid out, but so much of flying is tweaked and adjusted on-site. You need to adjust to the capabilities

of the operators and flyers while fitting to the artistic vision of the show,” said Harned.

“The goal is to make flying work for each production. And of course priority number one is to make sure people are safe.”

With over 400 productions inter-nationally each year, not all ZFX projects are staged in a theater.

“One of the craziest things we’ve done was a corporate event in Washington D.C. The hotel had two ten-story sections with a large atrium with trees and houses in it. Our project was to use our 3D flying system and fly the CEO of

14

Page 15: StagePass Sep/Oct 2013

the company out of a third story balcony window. He then flew over the houses and trees in the atrium for a grand entrance,” continued Harned. “We really felt we had done something wild.”

So what’s with the kilts? It’s more than a fashion statement. It’s a deep part of the ZFX culture and acts as a reminder to the team to continually think outside the box. Sometimes the best creative solutions start with thinking differently.

El Dorado Musical Theatre’s production of Peter Pan will be the first time any flying effects will be done at the Harris Center. Based on

Alonzo King LINES Ballet is a much celebrated contemporary ballet company that has delighted audiences and awed critics throughout the world.

This September, the group will visit the Harris Center and show the audience what can happen when a

cutting edge ballet company collaborates with noted composers, musicians, and visual artists from around the world.

While other ballet companies are struggling to survive, it’s notable that this company is celebrating

it’s 30th anniversary year. Their longevity must stem from the fact that they give audiences a fresh and arresting look at ballet with modern interpretations. Alonzo King’s work still draws—and even depends upon—the deeply rooted

cultural traditions of ballet that we all think we know. But the surprise is that the mix-up of the long-established traditions of classical ballet with a contemporary understanding of dance ends up establishing a wonderful rapport

David Harvey and double bassist and composer Edgar Meyer perform Lines Ballet’s “Meyer” at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts.

20

with the audience. Common ground is discovered in the humanity so beautifully portrayed.

The science of dance becomes the vehicle for establishing that rapport. Classical forms and techniques are never abandoned. But they are brought forward to a modern sensibility with

combinations not ordinarily seen, resulting in effects which are playful, contentious, emotional and new.

This is definitely not your mother’s ballet company. It’s new, engaging, expressive, and ultimately, fascinating.

Alonzo King LINES ballet will be performing the critically acclaimed “Resin” and a new piece “Meyer” set to the music of Edgar Meyer which premiered in San Francisco this past April.

The Dallas Brass experience is more than a concert. It’s a fun-filled, toe-tapping show that’s a thrill for the entire family. Each concert features classical masterpieces, Dixieland

delights, jazzy swing, popular show tunes, patriotic melodies and Hollywood favorites.

Since its founding over three decades ago by Michael Levine, Dallas Brass has become one

of America’s foremost musical ensembles.

The group has a unique blend of traditional brass instruments, including two trumpets, a trombone, a tuba and a French horn with a full complement of drums and

24

Page 25: StagePass Sep/Oct 2013

percussion, creating a performing entity of extraordinary range.

“A Dallas Brass concert is intended for the entire family.  Our ideal audience has a range in ages from 5 to 95,” said Levine. “Our goal is to entertain and enrich by playing great music, while showing our

audience how much we enjoy what we do.”

While symphonic credits include the New York Pops, Cincinnati Pops and the Philly Pops, Dallas Brass has been featured at Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center and has toured overseas in Europe and the Far East.

They have shared the stage with

the late Bob Hope, have performed for Presidents Gerald Ford and George W. Bush, have appeared on the CBS “Early Show,” and their music has been used numerous times on the television show, “The Young and the Restless.”

Dallas Brass will surely satisfy the musical taste buds of every music lover.

The Ultimate Tribute to Elvis

26

Page 27: StagePass Sep/Oct 2013

The “King” will be visiting the Harris Center in Folsom in early October. Or more accurately, four male per-formers will be on stage paying homage to Elvis Presley through the four periods of his fabulous career.

Elvis Lives is an unforgettable multimedia and live musical journey through Elvis’ life. His iconic style –embraced by many of today’s artists – continues to intrigue audiences of all generations.

Featuring finalists from Elvis Presley Enterprises’ worldwide Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist Contest, along with a tribute to Ann-Margret, audiences have a one-of-kind theatrical concert experience.

The Elvis tribute artists will be joined by a live band, back-up singers and dancers. Also on display will be iconic imagery from the Graceland archives; including a new exhibit of life-size images of Elvis’ stage-wear on display in the lobby.

The high-energy show features Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist Contest winner Bill Cherry, along with top-five finalists Kevin Mills, Leo Days, and Ben Klein. They are joined by the professional talent of Lorri Russo as Ann-Margret.

“We are excited to be working with some of the most exceptional tribute artists in the world,” said Barbara Cooley, Executive Producer for On Stage Touring, who produces the show.

“These talented performers really capture the spirit of the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll while evoking the sensation of being there with Elvis as he journeys through his musical career. Elvis Lives is truly a dynamic and family friendly production.”

In 2007, Elvis Presley Enterprises announced an inaugural Elvis tribute artist contest event that was a search for the “best representation of the legacy of Elvis Presley.”

Twenty-four of the best Elvis tribute artists from around the world, who had each won a preliminary round of the competition, traveled to Memphis during Elvis Week to compete. They sang and gyrated until finally a winner was named.

The contest has been brought back every year since. Four of the top performers are featured in the show, Elvis Lives.

Elvis Lives performs Monday, October 7

and Tuesday, October 8 at the Harris Center

for the Arts. Tickets at www.harriscenter.net

The decade that brought us water-beds, leisure suits, and Pet Rocks also spawned one of the most diverse periods in music history. The 1970s added hard rock, progressive rock, arena rock, disco, and the earliest stages of punk rock to the airwaves.

This Is The ‘70s picks up where Lyric Media’s first show, This Is The ‘60s, leaves off. It’s a unique multi-media experience that immerses the audience in the most wide-ranging musical decade in modern history.

The show blends historic film footage, dance, fashion, and animat-ed graphic designs of the era with note-for-note live music renditions of the greatest hits of the decade.

The show features music from the icons of Seventies rock, including Creedence Clearwater Revival, the Doobie Brothers, Peter Frampton, Carly Simon, Stevie Wonder, Elton John, The Band, Fleetwood Mac, Billy Joel, Journey, Michael Jackson, Yes, The Bee Gees, Boston, Led Zeppelin, Heart, The Guess Who, Badfinger, and many more, all performed live on stage.

The music is framed within the context of rare historical film foot-

age focusing on the key news events and pop culture of the decade. In es-sence, the show is a living documen-tary, immersing the audience in the sounds and lifestyles of the 1970s.

The unique presentation is the brainchild of producer/director/writer Jim Duffy, a veteran documentary filmmaker, author and musician, who has created programming for Dis-covery Networks and other national media outlets.

“I combined the two elements I love most: music and storytelling,” explains Duffy. “This Is The ‘70s takes the audience on a journey; one that’s designed to entertain, educate, and stimulate. The heart of the show is the music, but the visuals put that music into historical context.”

Duffy originally conceived This Is The ‘60s as a documentary series for the History Channel, but as the show developed, Duffy switched his sights from television to live stage presentation.

He tapped into the creative vision of his son Greg Duffy – a talented artist, video editor, and computer graphics wiz – to work as Production Designer and create the background graphics and

visual elements for the show. The father-son team are now ex-

panding from the ‘60s to the ‘70s, and plan to build the ‘This Is…’ brand into numerous shows focusing on different decades, seasons, and spe-cific music genres.

This Is The ‘70s offers a flashback to the days of bell-bottoms, lava lamps, CB radios, 8-track players, and some of the most versatile music in rock history.

If you were old enough to get into ‘70s nightclubs or attend one of the first arena rock shows, it’s a chance to relive the era like never before.

To the younger audience, it’s the ultimate introduction to the roots of classic rock and an intimate look at the birth of the environmental movement and other important activist causes that continue to resonate today.

You can see This Is The ‘70s perform

Saturday, September 28 and Sunday,

September 29 at Harris Center for the Arts.

Parlaying his substantial singer-songwriter appeal into a first-place finish on America’s Got Talent, Michael took home the one-million-dollar prize. He headlined the first-ever national America’s Got Talent tour. Following that, he toured with the legendary Stevie Nicks and Heart.

Grimm’s Fairytale takes us on a powerful journey from Grimm’s childhood poverty, Southern church upbringing, and playing for hat tips at age 11, to winning the Country Christian Music Award’s Star of Tomorrow at age 17, moving to Vegas for Legends in Concert, and winning the coveted $1 million first place prize of NBC TV’s then most popular music reality show, America’s Got Talent, to keeping his promise to build his grandparents a home after theirs was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina, and the incredible roller coaster ride that followed.

Just added opener: Bill Carter has been a pillar of the Austin music scene for nearly three decades, helping shape the city’s rich musical history along with songwriting-partner Ruth Ellsworth. Over 200 artists have found gold in the songwriting genius of this Texas Troubadour, including Stevie Ray Vaughan, The Fabulous Thunderbirds, Robert Palmer, The Counting Crows, Storyville, Omar and The Howlers, The Brian Setzer Orchestra, Ruth Brown, John Anderson, and Waylon Jennings.

Tommy James and the Shondells were discovered by a Pittsburgh promoter after their single “Hanky Panky” had taken the Pittsburgh nightlife by storm, and as soon as Tommy James signed with the promoter, the song went on to become the summer smash of 1966. Thus, began one of the longest strings of nonstop hits in recording industry history.

Promptly following “Hanky Panky,” “Say I Am (What I Am)” and “It’s Only Love” sold more than a million copies each. Tommy James and the Shondells kept creating number one hits, including “I Like The Way,” “Sweet Cherry Wine” and the party rock rave-up “Mony Mony,” and in 1968, they became one of the first acts to experiment with music videos, creating a mini-film around “Mony Mony.”
