THE WEEK AHEAD
In Our Parish
July 7th, 2019– 14th Sunday in Ordinary Time
Today’s Gospel story shows us that mission is for everyone, the clergy as well as the laity. The role of the laity mentioned in the Gospel is two-fold: “PRAYER and ACTIVE INVOLVEMENT.” Every Christian is called to participate in the spreading of the message of Christ through a commitment to prayer and a commitment to action, that is, to be actively involved in our respective parish/church communities. In today’s Gospel, Jesus also warned his disciples about the problems they will encounter as they carry out their mission. Aside from the fact that they are very few in number, they will also experience poverty, deprivation, opposition and persecution. By worldly standards, the disciples were the most unprepared and the most unworthy people to carry out such a big mission. Precisely because they were unprepared and unworthy, they learned not to rely only on themselves. They learned to draw strength from God. They learned to trust and they learned the value of prayer, humility, compassion, kindness and love. Let us follow the example of these disciples. And on this 4th of July weekend, let also follow the example and the sacrifices of the founding fathers and of all the people who worked hard so that peace, equality and freedom will reign in our land. Let us keep on loving as Jesus did. Amen.

OUR CIRCLE OF PRAYER
PLEASE PRAY FOR THOSE WHO HAVE DIED
In May 2020, Father Steve will lead a Pilgrimage to the Holy Sites of Ireland, including a special stop at the Seminary of the first Bishop of Richmond. In honor of the Diocesan Bicentennial, Father Steve has arranged a stop in the Town of Kilkenny, where Patrick
Kelly studied before being ordained a priest in 1802. In 1820 Father Kelly was consecrated Bishop and came to Richmond to serve as our first Bishop. We will also visit the Cliffs of Moher and among many other Holy sites, we will visit the Shrine of our Lady of Knock. We celebrate Mass daily. Please contact Grace Jones at the Parish Office with questions or to sign up for this amazing Pilgrimage. Please come to the informational meeting on Sunday, July 21st at 3pm at the Church.

ADORATION AT STAR OF THE SEA ON AUGUST 1st
FROM 8:30AM UNTIL 3:00PM A Few Benefits of Holy Hour of Eucharistic Adoration #1 – Every Holy Hour we make so pleases the Heart of Jesus that it is recorded in Heaven and retold for all eternity! (Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta) #2 – The spiritual lives of our families are strengthened through our Holy Hour. (Blessed John Paul II) #3 – All the angels of heaven gaze in ecstasy at the image left on your soul after each holy hour you make in the presence of Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. (Excerpt from ‘Letters To A Brother Priest’) #4 – The only time our Lord asked the Apostles for anything was the night He went into agony. Not for activity did He plead but for an Hour of companionship. (Archbishop Fulton Sheen) #5 – A Holy Hour in front of the Blessed Sacrament is worth more than a thousand years of human glory. (St. Padre Pio) #6– There is no doubt that a flood of graces will descend upon your family and the world if more souls would become docile pupils of adoration. (Blessed Pope John XXIII) #7 – Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament consoles a soul far beyond what the world can offer. (St. Alphonsus Ligouri)
Although the door is open to all, we do need people to commit to being an honor guard for just one hour to ensure Our Lord is never left alone. Please prayerfully consider participating in this beautiful devotion to Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament of the Eucharist. POC: Dick and Sue Meeker, [email protected], 757-228-7775.
The Vocation Cross The cross is available each weekend to any family or individual who would like to take it home and pray for vocations to the priesthood and religious life, and return it the following weekend.

Virginia Catholic Conference: Dur ing the month of July, the Diocese of Richmond encourages Catholics to learn about Social Justice, advocacy, and the corresponding Catholic Social Teaching Principle of “Call to Family, Community, and Participation”. Throughout Scripture, the Lord reminds His people to never forget those who are vulnerable like the widow, the orphan, and the alien. In this same spirit, the Church continues to stand for those who are oppressed or voiceless. Catholic social teaching reminds us that “social justice concerns the social, political, and economic aspects and, above all, the structural dimension of problems and their respective solutions.” We are called to answer to the needs of our neighbors by advocating for them and seeking to change the structures of society. Three ways you can participate in advocacy include: praying, educating yourself on the issues, and taking action. You can find more information on how to influence legislation through the Virginia Catholic Conference (VCC) which is the public policy agency representing Virginia’s Catholic bishops and their two dioceses. Some of the issues that the VCC advocates for include: upholding the dignity of all human life, religious freedom, family life, and social justice.

Learn more about the VCC network at www.vacatholic.org. Social Justice is also a form of charity which considers the root causes of problems. Catholics in the Diocese of Richmond exercise this role of seeking justice through advocacy by bringing important issues and advocating for public policy that is in line with Catholic values. This is primarily done through the VCC. Throughout Scripture and Church Tradition, we are mandated to seek the good and well-being of all, especially the poor and the vulnerable. This call is not a passive one, but one that should actively seek to support and strengthen social institutions, making sure they are just and care for the common good.
“Thus says the Lord: Act with justice and righteousness, and deliver from the hand of the oppressor anyone who has been robbed. And do no wrong or violence to the alien, the orphan, and the widow, or shed innocent blood in this place.” (Jeremiah 22:3)
