TRANSCRIPT
Starter• From you revision check list, identify
the 3 items you feel least confident in.
• Write each topic on a separate post-it and add it to the whiteboard.
Learning Objective
• Understand what GPS is and the different ways in which it can be used in our daily lives
• Understand how to approach exam questions to achieve the maximum marks.
Convergence
A device that is made for one purpose but is developed to carry out other functions
Can you think of an example ?
Primary function phone callsbut now include cameras, music players, surfing the internet, watching videos and GPS.
Global Positioning System
Uses distance measurements
from 3 satellites to work out the user position.
Satellite-based
navigation system
24 satellites
GPS receiver compares time
signal transmitted by satellite with
time received
Uses of GPS
• Find your way to a specific location.
• Tell you the distance to a specific place. e.g. 2 miles to the Eiffel Tower
• Give you the location of something e.g. train station
GPS Receivers
Geocaching
http://www.geocaching.com/videos/default.aspx
•Outdoor treasure hunting game
•Players locate hidden containers call geocaches using GPS enabled devices
•Share their experiences online
Metadata
• Information about the content of a digital item
• The information is embedded within the file
E.g. an image taken on a digital camera might contain the date/time and camera settings such as shutter speed
• Cameras with GPS capability can also store the exact coordinates of where the image was taken.
Uses of metadata
• Describe the file e.g. song title and artist in an MP3 file
• Information retrieval e.g. date/time stamp on JPEG files
• Ownership and rights management e.g. to stop files being copied
Geo Tagging
• Process of adding geographical identification metadata to digital media files such as a photograph or video
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mWSFj1-L01Q&feature=related
•Use a device with a built-in GPS
•Add on GPS device
•Use a separate hand held GPS device and synchronize images and GPS tracking information
•Manually add location information (e.g. postcode)
• Can you think of any problems with using Geo Tagging ?
Most smartphones with GPS capability automatically geotag photographs.
Is this a problem if you are sharing your photos online…?
