Customiz stain is a service that allows you to create yourown stain colors and finishes on standard veneer. Customizstain color is available on all product lines that offer woodveneer. A $425 stain-matching fee applies on CUSTOMIZrequests (Exception: The $425 fee does not apply onmatches to Coalesse standard finishes or for a low-gloss finish request on a standard color). The $425 fee covers thecost of formulating the Customiz color finish and appliesregardless of whether or not an order for product is placed.

In addition, an approval form must be signed to indicate cus-tomer acceptance of Customiz match. A $5,000 initiation feewill be charged prior to first order entry, which activates thefinish for a one year time period. If additional years areneeded, a $1,000 annual annuity fee applies. All style num-ber related CUSTOMIZ charges are no cost as of April 2014.

Customiz stain takes 10 days to formulate. Consult theSurface Materials Reference Manual for more information.Custom veneers are also available and must be quoted bySteelcase specials group. Customiz stain on custom veneerstakes 2 to 4 weeks to formulate.

Fabric Application Direction Guidelines

What is the issue?Some textiles are simple and look the same regardless of how you apply them toa product. Other fabrics are patterned,textured, or have luster that will have adistinctly different appearance applied in adifferent direction on a chair. Because ofthese differences, and the fact that thereare limits to how some fabrics can beapplied to Steelcase Health products, it isimportant to understand fabric applicationdirection when ordering a product to avoidbeing disappointed.

Talking about directionFabrics come on rolls. The long yarns thatrun down the length of the roll are called the “warp” yarns. These yarns are used todefine the direction you are viewing thefabric as it is applied to a chair. Fabric direc-tionality is determined by how the fabriccomes off the roll.

It is NOT determined by the way the patternlooks on the product. For example, theimage below shows the fabric appliedwarped horizontal although the stripesappear vertical.

TerminologySteelcase uses the terms warped horizontaland warped vertical. There are other termswithin the industry that are used that havethe same meaning:• Warped horizontal is also referred to as: railroaded or across roll

• Warped vertical is also referred to as: woven way, down roll, or top out

Why is it important?Dealers must specify fabric applicationdirection when ordering COMs andSteelcase Health Graded-In fabrics. Werequire the dealer to specify the directionbecause we do not know which waycustomers want to see a pattern on thefurniture. Therefore, it is critical to know howthe pattern is run on the roll to ensure thatSteelcase Health builds and ships eachorder to the customer’s expectation eachand every time.

How do I know which way thefabric comes off the roll?Most textile companies will swatch theirfabrics in a warp vertical (woven way, downroll) direction. Some exceptions might bemade to address patterns especially withstripes. Typically, when a fabric is swatchedin a warp horizontal (railroad or across roll)direction, the direction is noted on theswatch card or fabric sample. If in doubt ofa fabric direction, we encourage you tocontact the textile vendor for clarification.

VinylVinyl generally only passes on SteelcaseHealth product in a horizontal or across rolldirection. This is due to physical propertiesof the material. If a vinyl is applied in theopposite direction, too much stretch in thematerial can compromise the overallaesthetics of the final upholstery. If apatterned vinyl is being specified and thevinyl must be run in a vertical direction, pre-approval must be arranged throughSteelcase Health . Steelcase Health willconsider the request and a decision will bemade based on the specific vinyl andproduct combination. Contact SteelcaseHealth’s Customer Care line.

Required Action Steps beforeSpecifying1. Verify by using Steelcase’s COM website that the fabric is approved on the product.2. Verify the direction that the fabric can be applied. Occasionally a fabric is only approved in one direction. 3. Confirm with the customer how they want the fabric to look on the furniture.4. Confirm using the swatch card or vendor’s website the direction the sample is shown.5. Now you’re ready to place the order.
